I Keep Getting a CAPTCHA on Chrome: What It Means and What to Do

A recurring Google Search CAPTCHA is not proof Chrome is broken. Find out what Google’s unusual-traffic prompt means and how to investigate it.

If a CAPTCHA keeps appearing while you use Google Search in Chrome, first check whether the page says Google detected “unusual traffic from your computer network.” Google says this challenge responds to activity it sees from your network; it does not, by itself, mean Chrome is broken. The steps below apply to that Google Search prompt. If the CAPTCHA appears on another website, that site’s message and support guidance may differ.

Why Google Search keeps asking you to complete a CAPTCHA

Google says it may show an “unusual traffic” challenge when its systems detect requests from a computer network that appear automated. Possible sources include automated programs or search scrapers, malware, someone else using the same shared network, a VPN, or an IPv6 tunnel service. The CAPTCHA alone does not identify which source, if any, is responsible. Google’s Search Help explains the unusual-traffic message and possible causes.

This is a network-risk signal, not proof of a Chrome fault. If the prompt appears on a work, school, or other shared connection, activity from another device on that network may also be relevant.

What to do, in order

  1. Confirm which page shows the challenge. Check whether it appears on Google Search with an unusual-traffic message. Google’s guidance here concerns that specific prompt, not every CAPTCHA shown in Chrome.
  2. Complete the CAPTCHA once. Google says solving its reCAPTCHA lets you continue using Google. It does not establish that the underlying cause of repeated prompts has gone away.
  3. If the challenge will not appear or work, check browser support and JavaScript. Google advises using a browser supported by reCAPTCHA and ensuring JavaScript is enabled. See Google’s reCAPTCHA troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Consider other devices and services using the connection. Look for automated tools or services sending searches, and consider whether other people share the network. This is a check, not an assumption that another user or program caused the issue.
  5. Review whether a VPN or IPv6 tunnel service is active. Google lists these among possible contributors. If one is involved, Google suggests uninstalling the VPN or contacting its provider; this is not a reason to buy a VPN as a fix.
  6. Investigate possible malware if the prompt persists. Google recommends learning how to detect and remove malware but does not name or endorse a particular product as the solution.
  7. Ask the person or provider who can inspect the connection. On a managed or shared network, contact its administrator or an IT professional. If a VPN or tunnel may be involved, contact that provider. Otherwise, Google advises contacting your internet provider about the error.

Choose the right person to contact

  • Shared work, school, or household network: Ask the network administrator or IT professional to investigate traffic from devices on the connection.
  • VPN or tunnel in use: Contact the provider, especially if the challenge occurs while connected through that service.
  • Personal connection without an apparent VPN: Contact your internet provider if the issue continues.

Google’s guidance offers diagnostic and escalation steps, not a guaranteed single fix. It does not quantify how often each cause occurs or promise when repeated challenges will stop.
