I Got Fed Up with Desktop Search, So I Built My Own Using Rust and Tauri: What Vexil Does

Vexil is a desktop search app built with Rust and Tauri to find local PDFs, code snippets, and design assets when you forget the exact filename. Here is what its developer says it does, how it is built, and what has not been verified.

Vexil is a desktop search app that its developer, Priya Ranjan Sahu, built to find local files when the exact filename is gone from memory. In his DEV Community article, he describes it as a local, offline search tool written with Rust and Tauri, with a global hotkey and semantic matching powered by local embedding models. Every product claim below comes from the author’s own account. None of it has been independently tested.

The problem Vexil is meant to solve

The author’s complaint is familiar to anyone with a long-lived downloads folder or project tree. You remember what a PDF said, or roughly what a code snippet did, but not the filename or the folder it landed in. Standard file search works well when you type the exact name. It works poorly when you type a slightly misspelled keyword, or a phrase from the document’s contents.

He names three kinds of material he wanted to recover: older PDFs, code snippets, and design assets. Those are useful examples because they mix plain text with formats that are hard to search by filename alone. Vexil’s pitch is that you should be able to find them from a half-remembered idea rather than an exact string.

What the author says Vexil does

  • Keyword and filename search across local files, for cases where you remember part of the name.
  • Semantic matching, which the author describes as using local embedding models so the app can match on meaning, not just characters.
  • A global hotkey that opens the search from any application, according to the author.
  • Offline operation, which the author describes as the app keeping private files on the machine rather than sending them to an OpenAI server.

The article does not publish a list of supported file types, indexing limits, or a settings reference. Treat the list above as the scope of the author’s description, not a complete feature specification.

How it is built

The author lists the following stack. The table separates what he states from what remains open.

Area What the author states What is not established
Backend language Rust Crate versions and build configuration: not stated
Desktop framework Tauri Minimum Tauri or OS versions: not stated
Frontend React and TypeScript Not applicable
Index storage Local SQLite Index size behaviour on large folders: not stated
Semantic context Local embedding models Which models, their size, and their hardware requirements: not stated
Filesystem crawling Rust ignore and notify crates How the crawler handles symlinks, network drives, and permission errors: not stated

Two parts of this stack deserve a closer look because they explain why the project is hard.

Cross-platform crawling

The author calls cross-platform filesystem crawling the hardest part of the project. Each operating system has different path conventions, permission models, and file-change notification behaviour. The ignore crate handles directory walking with ignore rules, and notify watches for changes so the index can stay current. Using both is a reasonable approach, but the article does not show how they were configured, and no source code is published with it.

Keeping indexing off the interface thread

The second difficulty was background indexing. A search tool that rebuilds its index on the thread that draws the window will freeze when a large folder is scanned. The author says avoiding that lockup required architectural rewrites, but he does not describe what those rewrites were. Readers who want to learn from the project will have to read the code itself if it is released.

Privacy claims: what is stated and what is unverified

The author describes Vexil as completely local and offline. He says the semantic features run on local embedding models, so private file contents are not sent to an OpenAI server. This is the most important claim for many readers, and it is also the one least able to be checked from the article alone.

The article does not state whether the app makes any network request at all, including update checks, telemetry, or model downloads on first run. “Offline” in the author’s usage describes the search itself. It is not a guarantee about every outbound connection the application may make. If that distinction matters for your use, check the app’s network behaviour yourself before indexing sensitive folders.

Platforms and availability

The DEV article says the first release binaries were published for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The author’s LinkedIn post repeats the three-platform claim and links to a download page. Both are the author’s statements, not independent confirmation.

The linked download page was not reachable when this article was prepared, so current availability of each binary, the operating-system versions it supports, code signing or notarization status, and any setup steps are all unconfirmed. The available copies also do not establish a publication year, a repository URL, a licence, or whether the project is still actively maintained.

Performance claims

The author describes the app as “blazingly fast” and says it uses “practically nothing” in resources. Neither phrase is a measurement. The article reports no benchmark, indexing time, search latency, memory footprint, binary size, or battery figure. Until someone publishes measured results under stated conditions, speed and resource use should be treated as untested claims.

How to evaluate Vexil yourself

  1. Download the build from the author’s linked page only after confirming it points to the same project as the DEV article.
  2. Index a test folder that contains no sensitive files. Record how long the first index takes and whether the interface stays responsive while it runs.
  3. Disconnect the machine from the network, then run a semantic search. If it returns results, the semantic path is working without a connection.
  4. Search for a file you remember only by its contents, and then by a misspelled keyword. Compare the results with your operating system’s built-in search for the same queries.
  5. Monitor outbound connections during first launch with your operating system’s firewall or a network monitor, so you can see what the app contacts beyond the search itself.

Those steps will tell you more about fit than any feature list. They are also the checks that the article’s own claims would need to pass before they can be relied on.

What is still open

  • Whether all file contents, embeddings, and index data stay on the device.
  • Which file types are indexed, and how large a folder can be before indexing slows noticeably.
  • Licensing, repository access, and whether the project is maintained.
  • How the app compares with operating-system search or other desktop search tools. No controlled comparison is published.

The article is a useful description of an ambitious local search project and the engineering choices behind it. It is not yet evidence that Vexil works better than the search tools you already use.
