Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA coding agent can combine several old Bash scripts into one command-line tool, and the result can be worth keeping. The reliable route has three parts: write down what each script actually does before you ask for anything, define the interface you want the merged tool to have, and review the agent’s shell code as closely as you would review a colleague’s change. The agent speeds up the rewrite. It does not decide what the tool should do, and it does not prove that the tool works.
Start with an inventory of the old scripts
A Bash script is a text file containing shell commands. When you run it, the arguments you supply reach the script through positional parameters such as $1 and $@, and the script must be executable for direct invocation to work. The GNU Bash Reference Manual, Edition 5.3, last updated 18 May 2025, describes these mechanics. They matter here because two scripts that look alike can read their arguments differently, print different output, or delete different files. Merging them without knowing those differences is where most of the risk sits.

For each script, record the following before you change anything:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Inputs: the arguments it expects, which are required and which are optional, and any environment variables or config files it reads.
- Outputs: what it prints to standard output, what it writes to standard error, and what its exit status means.
- Side effects: files it creates, overwrites, moves, or deletes; network calls; anything it installs or changes outside its own directory.
- Assumptions: the working directory it expects, the shell and tools it depends on (such as
find, sed, orjq), and the operating system it was written for.
Spot overlaps and conflicts early
Once the inventory exists, look for places where scripts disagree. Those disagreements are the decisions the merged tool will force you to make. The table below shows the kind of conflict to look for; the rows are illustrative, not drawn from any particular set of scripts.

| Behavior | Script A | Script B | Decision to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output location | Writes to the current directory | Writes to a fixed folder under the home directory | Pick one default and keep an override flag |
| Existing files | Overwrites without asking | Skips files that already exist | Choose one rule, or make it an explicit option |
| Failure reporting | Prints a message and exits 0 | Exits 1 with an error on standard error | Adopt the second behavior; the first hides failures from callers |
| Destructive steps | Deletes matching files | Only lists them | Keep a dry-run mode for every deletion |
Define the interface before you write the prompt
The agent needs a concrete target, and “make these into one tool” is not one. Describe the interface in ordinary terms: the command name, the subcommands, the flags, what counts as success, and what counts as failure. An illustrative shape looks like this:
backup-tool snapshot [--dry-run] SOURCE DEST
backup-tool prune --keep 7 DEST
Decide the conventions as well. Success should exit with status 0. Usage errors and failed operations should exit non-zero and write their messages to standard error, so that callers and other scripts can tell what happened. Every destructive subcommand should have a dry-run form that prints what it would do and changes nothing. If the merged tool replaces several scripts, write down which old command maps to which new subcommand. That table will also be your checklist when you test.

Write a brief the agent can be held to
A useful brief gives the agent the scripts, the target interface, and the rules for the rewrite. Keep it specific:
- Attach the original scripts with secrets, tokens, and private paths removed.
- List the behaviors that must be preserved, and the behaviors you have agreed to drop. Do not let the agent drop anything you have not named.
- Forbid new dependencies unless you approve them, and name the shell and tools that are already available on your machine.
- Require a usage message, consistent exit codes, and a dry-run mode for any command that moves, overwrites, or deletes files.
- Ask for a short explanation of each change, mapped to the old script it came from.
Ask for changes in a copy of the scripts directory, ideally under version control, so that every edit appears as a diff you can read and reverse.

Control what the agent is allowed to run
Coding agents can often read files, edit them, and run shell commands. What they are permitted to do depends on the product and its configuration, so check your own setup rather than assuming. As one example, Anthropic’s Claude Code CLI reference documents controls such as a disallowed-tools setting, a --permission-mode option, and a --dangerously-skip-permissions flag, which the documentation describes as something to use with caution. Other agents expose different controls, so read the documentation for the one you use.
Whatever the product, keep the agent in a working copy, keep destructive commands behind approval, and do not point it at the only copy of your files. Running a rewrite against real data is a decision to make after the merged tool has passed your checks, not before.

Review the agent’s shell code step by step
Shell is easy to get almost right. Review the change in this order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Read the full diff against the originals. Confirm that each old behavior is either present in the new tool or on your list of dropped behaviors.
- Check quoting. Every variable expansion should sit inside double quotes unless you intend word splitting. Paths can contain spaces, glob characters, and leading dashes, so look for unquoted
$varand for arguments that could be mistaken for options. - Find every destructive command, including
rm,mv,sed -i, and output redirections with>. Confirm that each one sits behind the dry-run check or an explicit confirmation. - Confirm that failures propagate. Check that a failed command stops the operation or is reported with a non-zero exit status. If the agent added
set -euo pipefail, test how the script behaves when a pipeline fails, because these options have well-known edge cases. - Run
bash -non the script. It checks syntax without executing the commands. If you use a linter such as ShellCheck, run it too and read each warning rather than silencing it by reflex. - Confirm the file has an interpreter line that matches the shell it was written for, and set the executable bit with
chmod +xonly after the review.
Test the cases that break merged scripts
Merging scripts tends to fail at the edges: no arguments, unusual paths, and repeated runs. Run the following checks against the merged tool and compare each result with what you expect. Passing these checks shows only that the tool handles these cases; it does not establish that the tool is correct in every situation.

| Missing destination | ./backup-tool snapshot src |
Fails before writing anything, with a clear message |
| Repeated run | Run the same snapshot twice | Matches the behavior you defined for existing files |
Keep a record of which checks you ran, on which machine, and what happened. A write-up that says “the tool works” without that record gives readers nothing to verify.
Know when Bash has reached its limit
Bash suits small utilities and wrappers. Google’s Shell Style Guide states: “Shell should only be used for small utilities or simple wrapper scripts.” The same guide says that a script longer than 100 lines, or one with non-straightforward control flow, should be rewritten in a more structured language. That is Google’s project guidance, not a universal rule, but it is a useful signal. If the merged tool needs structured data parsing, complex retry logic, many modes, or careful error handling across many subcommands, a language with real data structures may serve you better than an ever-longer script.
Decide whether the merged tool earns its place
A consolidated tool is only an improvement if it changes what you do day to day. Judge it on evidence from your own use:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Do you run one command where you used to remember several script names and argument orders?
- Do the flags behave the same across subcommands, so that a habit learned once carries over?
- Does the tool remove a repeated manual step, such as running two scripts in a fixed order?
- Would you trust it on the files you care about, after the checks above?
Keep the old scripts for a while after the switch, and use the new tool for the same tasks. If you keep reaching for the old commands out of habit or uncertainty, the merge has not yet replaced them, and the interface or the documentation needs more work.
