Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFour men held at the Folkston ICE Processing Center in Georgia appeared in a five-minute video that describes conditions inside the facility and criticizes the immigration court system. The Verge reported the video on October 8, 2026, and identified the software involved as GettingOut, the communications platform owned by Telmate that the facility provides for messages, photos, phone calls and video calls. The outlet’s reporting does not establish how the men produced the recording. The details below separate what the report states from what remains attributed, unverified or unresolved.
Who appears in the video
According to The Verge’s report, the video features four detainees at Folkston, a facility in southeastern Georgia that GEO Group owns and operates. One of the men, Idris Makhmudov, is quoted in the reporting as a featured detainee. In the video, the detainees describe their conditions and refer to the immigration court system as “deportation courts.” That phrase is a detainee’s characterization quoted by the reporter, not an official designation.

The reporting also notes that ICE detention is meant to ensure people attend their deportation proceedings and is not intended as punishment. The detainees’ descriptions in the video are offered against that stated purpose. The reporter also notes that Folkston was previously a prison.

The software and the company behind it
GettingOut is the proprietary communications system the facility makes available to detainees. The Verge describes it as the tool for messages, photos, phone calls and video calls, and says it is owned by Telmate. The service exists so detainees can stay in contact with family and loved ones, which is the tension at the center of this story: a system built for private family contact was the channel through which detainees’ accounts of conditions reached the public.

The report places two historical enforcement matters alongside the video, and they should be read as separate from it:
- The Verge says Telmate was ordered to pay $4.23 million to settle a lawsuit stemming from a 2020 data breach. This is the outlet’s characterization; the reporting does not reproduce the court record, so the case should not be expanded beyond that account without checking the primary filing.
- The Verge says the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Tel*Link to pay $3 million over freezing and draining funds from incarcerated people’s accounts. The report names Tel*Link as a separate company and does not connect that order to the Folkston video.
How the video left the facility
The Verge states plainly that it is unclear exactly how the men made the video. It offers one possibility only: that someone outside the facility called them and recorded the message. That is a suggestion, not a finding. Nothing in the reporting establishes the recording device, the call pathway, or whether any feature of the tablet or software was used in a way the facility did not intend.

Access to devices and the cost of a call
Samantha Hamilton, an Atlanta-based immigration attorney with Asian Americans Advancing Justice and a member of the Shut Down Folkston campaign, told The Verge that each housing pod of 60 to 70 detainees has access to three or four tablets. That is her account of device availability, and the reporting does not include an independent count.
On pay, Makhmudov is quoted in the report saying: “The workers here are paid $1 a day, which is just enough for a 10-minute phone call.” The report presents this as a detainee’s statement about the pay for the facility’s detainee work program. The underlying pay practice is not independently verified in the reporting.
The Verge also summarizes federal phone-rate limits. As it describes them, the Federal Communications Commission set caps in 2024 of 11 to 25 cents per minute for calls from correctional facilities, with the cap varying by facility size. The outlet reports that the FCC voted in 2025 to raise the cap by up to 83 percent. Rate rules change, so confirm the current cap in the FCC’s rules before relying on any per-minute figure.

Conditions described by detainees and their attorney
Hamilton told The Verge that members of the Shut Down Folkston coalition regularly receive reports of poor food and water, including reports of worms in the water, and that her clients have reported health problems. These are attributed accounts. The reporting does not include inspection findings, medical records, or an official response that would confirm or rebut them.
The report also describes collective action inside the facility. An open letter signed by 45 detainees and an estimated 73 detainees on hunger strike are both reported as dated estimates attributed to the detainees and their advocates. The participation numbers may have changed since the report was published.
Segregation and expected retaliation
Hamilton told The Verge that the men shown in the video had been placed in segregation, and she said the detainees expected retaliation. Those are her statements. The reporting does not establish whether the segregation was tied to the video, and it does not include a facility statement explaining the placement. Readers should treat the retaliation concern as an expectation reported by an advocate, not as a documented act.

Facility and contract figures
The Verge identifies GEO Group as Folkston’s owner and operator and cites the following figures. Each one carries the source the report attributes it to.
| Measure | Figure as reported | Attribution in the report |
|---|---|---|
| Stated capacity | 780 beds | Facility capacity as reported by The Verge |
| Guaranteed minimum occupancy | 544 | Facility contract term as reported by The Verge |
| Monthly operating payments | More than $1.5 million per month | A 2021 Homeland Security budget overview, as cited by The Verge |
Because the payment figure comes from a 2021 budget document, it describes that period rather than current payments. The occupancy and capacity figures are not stated with a current date in the reporting.

Georgia court figures
The Verge also cites Georgia court data. Those figures come from federal data analyzed by Syracuse University researchers, as the outlet reports them, and they apply to the periods and courts named in the report only.
| Measure | Figure as reported | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Detained cases in Georgia courts | 143,729 | Over the preceding year, as reported by The Verge |
| Detained cases with no legal representation | 81 percent | Same case set, as reported by The Verge |
| Asylum cases decided in Atlanta | 2,072 so far in the fiscal year | Fiscal year to date, as reported by The Verge |
| Asylum denial rate, Atlanta | 89 percent in the current fiscal year; 63 percent in 2023 | As reported by The Verge; the 2023 comparison is a full-year figure only if the report states it |
These numbers describe the cases named in the reporting. They should not be read as a rate for every immigration case in Georgia or the United States, and this article has not re-analyzed the underlying data.
What would change the picture
The Verge’s report is a single news account. The following records would move the claims above from attributed statements to documented facts:

- An official response from ICE or GEO Group to the segregation, retaliation and conditions allegations.
- The court filing behind the Telmate settlement and the CFPB order against Tel*Link.
