I Don’t Want the Headphone Jack Back. Give Me a Second USB-C Port Instead

A second USB-C port lets you charge while using wired audio or accessories. Here is what it solves, what it doesn't, and how it compares with adapters, jacks and wireless.

The port worth asking for is a second USB-C connector. One phone port can’t charge the phone while it also feeds wired headphones, a USB DAC, an SSD or a game controller. Two ports remove that conflict. That is the argument Android Central made in a 2026 editorial. This article tests the idea against what it does and doesn’t solve.

What the second-port argument actually claims

Android Central’s editorial asks phone makers for multiple USB-C ports. It points to the ASUS ROG Phone 9 and 9 Pro as phones that already have two. The benefit is simple: one port stays free for power while the other carries audio or another accessory.

The claim is about flexibility. It isn’t a claim that USB-C sounds better than a 3.5 mm jack. It also doesn’t say a second USB-C port works like a headphone socket. Nobody has published a measured battery or performance gain for the idea. It is a use-case proposal.

What a second port does not fix

  • It doesn’t make old headphones work. Traditional 3.5 mm headphones still need a suitable USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, or a phone with a jack (WIRED, Tech Advisor).
  • It doesn’t guarantee audio support. Digital audio has to be converted to analog before it reaches conventional drivers. With a 3.5 mm jack, the phone’s audio hardware does that. Over USB-C, the conversion may happen in the phone, in an adapter, or in the headphones themselves. So a USB-C label alone doesn’t promise compatibility or better sound. Tech Advisor advises checking compatibility before buying an adapter or headphones.
  • It doesn’t mean both ports are equal. Don’t assume every USB-C port on a phone handles the same audio modes, data speeds, display output or charging. The available sources don’t establish one standard configuration, so check the spec sheet for the model you’re considering.

The example phone: ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro

ASUS’s product page for the ROG Phone 9 Pro lists USB-C headphone support and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. That makes it a useful example of options coexisting. It doesn’t show that a second USB-C port can replace the jack. ASUS’s specification page also lists Android 15 and a 5,800 mAh typical battery. Those are model-specific figures from ASUS’s page, not evidence that extra ports help battery life. Specs and availability change, so check ASUS’s current pages for your region.

Comparing the ways to listen and charge

Option What it gives you What to check
Second USB-C port A separate port stays free for charging while an accessory is attached. Extra hardware and design cost. Whether the phone supports your audio or accessory mode. The sources describe the use case but don’t quantify the engineering trade-off.
One USB-C port plus pass-through adapter 3.5 mm headphones and charging together through one accessory. Phone and headphone compatibility, charging behavior, adapter size, and the extra item to carry.
USB-C headphones A direct wired connection to the USB-C port. Accessory compatibility. The port is occupied, so you can’t charge at the same time on a one-port phone.
Built-in 3.5 mm jack A direct connection for analog headphones and compatible audio gear. Whether a phone with a jack meets your other needs. The port alone doesn’t determine sound quality.
Wireless headphones No cable, so nothing occupies the USB-C port. Headphone battery, wireless features and codec preferences. It isn’t the best choice for everyone.

Andrew Martonik, Android Central’s U.S. Executive Editor from 2012 to 2020, put it this way in an older opinion piece: “Different situations call for different audio interfaces, and they each have their own trade-offs.” That is an opinion, not a technical standard, but it fits this comparison.

The workaround if your phone has one port

A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with charging pass-through covers the main conflict on a one-port phone. WIRED has described the Belkin Rockstar 3.5mm Audio + USB-C Charge Adapter as this kind of product. It is a workaround, not a second built-in port. It adds a dongle to carry, and it still depends on your phone’s USB-C audio support. Confirm compatibility, current availability, price and warranty with the seller before you buy.

Is the demand real?

People do ask. Forum threads pose questions like “Do you still miss the 3.5mm headphone jack?” and “Should smartphones have 2 USB-C connectors?” Those are individual discussions, not surveys. No attributable figure on consumer demand for a second port turned up in the sources reviewed, so treat the idea as a reasoned wish, not a proven market need.

Verdict

A second USB-C port is a sensible answer for people who want to charge, listen over a wire and attach accessories at once. It is a better fit for that than a lone headphone jack. It is not a better answer for someone who just wants to plug in analog headphones. For them, a jack or a good adapter is more direct. Before buying, check how the specific phone handles audio over USB-C, and how its second port, if it has one, differs from the first.
