The Battery Spec Ryobi and Milwaukee Don’t Headline: Power Output, Not Amp-Hours

The number printed biggest on a Ryobi or Milwaukee battery is amp-hours (Ah). It tells you capacity, which mostly means runtime. It does not tell you how much power the pack can deliver at one moment, and that is what decides how a tool behaves when you push it hard. Two 5Ah packs can differ in output, and manufacturers now say so openly: Milwaukee’s August 13, 2026 announcement describes a revised 5Ah M18 pack with 50% more power than the one it replaces.

One correction to the premise: the spec isn’t strictly hidden. Ryobi Australia lists a peak output figure on at least one product page, and Milwaukee has a “Power Scale.” But the figure is rarely the headline, and it isn’t expressed the same way across brands.

What amp-hours do and don’t tell you

Milwaukee’s own battery-label guide (“How to Choose a Milwaukee Tool REDLITHIUM Battery”) explains that the number at the end of an M18 battery name is the amp-hour rating, and ties it to runtime. That is a capacity statement. It says how long the pack can keep going, not how hard it can push at a given instant.

A rough analogy: Ah is the size of the fuel tank, output is how much fuel the engine can draw per second. A bigger tank doesn’t guarantee a stronger engine.

Three units, three different questions

Unit What it measures Question it answers
Amp-hours (Ah) Charge capacity How long will it run?
Watt-hours (Wh) Stored energy (Ah × nominal voltage) How much total work is in the pack?
Watts (W) Power, the rate energy is delivered How hard can it push right now?

Ryobi Australia’s listing for the 18V ONE+ HP 5Ah battery (model RB1850X) shows all three separately: 5Ah, 90Wh and 1625W peak output. The 90Wh follows directly from 5Ah × 18V. The 1625W does not follow from anything else on the label, which is exactly the point: it is independent information. (As my own arithmetic, 1625W at 18V nominal implies roughly 90A of peak current, though the listing doesn’t state the conditions behind the figure.)

Same Ah, different output: the Milwaukee example

Milwaukee’s August 13, 2026 release, “Milwaukee Delivers an M18 System Wide Upgrade,” says the M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5 keeps 5Ah but delivers 50% more power than the previous REDLITHIUM XC5.0. Senior Product Manager Matthew Gabrielse is quoted: “We’ve elevated the power of the M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5 Battery Pack to a PWR level 3 on the REDLITHIUM Power Scale, while continuing to deliver 5 amp hours of runtime.”

  • Important Usage Notice: Cannot be used to charge the battery of a power tool, and the adapter cannot be plugged into any charger. If you need to charge the power tool battery, use the original battery charger.

Two things follow. First, a battery’s Ah can stay fixed while its output changes, so Ah cannot rank packs by power. Second, this is Milwaukee’s claim about its own product, with no independent test attached, and the release doesn’t define test conditions in the material we have.

Why it matters in practice

  • Demanding tools. High-draw tools such as saws, grinders and high-torque drivers pull heavy current. A pack with weak output can sag, run hot, or trip protection, even with plenty of charge left. Ryobi’s Australian guide, “How to choose the right 18V ONE+ battery,” recommends larger-Ah packs where more power or runtime is needed.
  • Light tools. For a small drill or light-duty tool, extra output buys little. Runtime and weight matter more.
  • Heat. Ryobi’s US 18V ONE+ page describes IntelliCell electronics and heat management, a reminder that delivering power and managing temperature go together.

Be careful with the common assumption that a higher-output pack will make every tool faster. Tool speed and torque are largely set by the tool’s motor and electronics; a stronger pack mainly helps when a weaker one would have been the limit.

Why you can’t compare brands from the labels

Ryobi publishes watts of peak output on one regional page. Milwaukee uses a PWR level on a proprietary scale plus relative claims (“50% more”). These are different languages, from different regions, models and test conditions. No independent head-to-head test of Ryobi versus Milwaukee output is established in the sources behind this article, so it can’t say which brand’s pack is more powerful. Treat a watt figure and a PWR level as non-interchangeable.

A practical checklist for choosing a pack

  1. Start with the platform. Ryobi describes its 18V ONE+ batteries as compatible within the ONE+ platform; Milwaukee’s packs are specified for M18 tools. Nothing cited supports cross-brand interchangeability, so treat the systems as separate, and don’t use adapters without model-specific safety guidance.
  2. Use the exact model name. “5Ah” covers several different packs; look at the full model.
  3. Read Wh and any output or power tier. Wh gives energy; watts or PWR level gives output. If a listing shows neither, ask the maker or retailer.
  4. Check weight and size. Milwaukee lists the M18 REDLITHIUM FORGE XC6.0 (6Ah) at 2.07 lb with a three-year limited warranty. Ryobi’s RB1850X listing shows 0.74 kg as a tool weight figure. A bigger pack adds capacity and mass.
  5. Check charging. Milwaukee states the Forge XC6.0 recharges to 80% in 15 minutes and 100% in 25 minutes with its M18 Dual Bay Simultaneous Super Charger. Those times apply to that pack and charger combination.
  6. Match to the heaviest job you do, not the average one.

Platform size claims

Ryobi Australia says ONE+ is compatible with more than 200 tools on the cited page. Milwaukee’s product page says “ONE SYSTEM, 300+ TOOLS.” These are company statements in different contexts and regions, not a like-for-like count.

What a fair comparison would need

A trustworthy test would use the same task and tool, matched battery age and charge state, controlled ambient temperature, and would report work completed, runtime, pack temperature and charge time, with the method disclosed. Until such data exists, treat each manufacturer’s power figure as a guide to its own range, not a cross-brand ranking.

The Bottom Line

Don’t shop by Ah alone. Look for watt-hours and an output figure or power tier, and weigh them against your hardest task, pack weight and charge time. Stay inside your tool platform, and read manufacturer power claims as claims, not independent results.
