The alternative in the headline is Zen Browser, a free, open-source desktop browser built on Firefox. Its vertical tabs and workspace-focused layout may appeal if you juggle many tabs or want a more customizable interface. Zen is still labeled beta, though, and its streaming, privacy, and compatibility details deserve a closer look before you switch.
What Zen Browser is—and what makes it different
Zen is a desktop browser available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It uses Firefox as its foundation, but emphasizes a compact interface organized around vertical tabs and Workspaces rather than simply reproducing a conventional browser layout. Zen’s official download page labels it beta.

The How-To Geek headline describes Zen as a modern alternative, but that is an author’s judgment, not proof that Zen is objectively better than Chrome or Firefox. There is no controlled performance, privacy, or usability comparison established here. The more practical question is whether Zen’s workflow suits how you browse.

Zen’s manual documents several features intended to help organize browsing. The manual also says it is incomplete, and the browser remains under active development, so details and polish may change.
#1 Best Overall
- ONGOING PROTECTION Download instantly & install protection for 10 PCs, Macs, iOS or Android devices in minutes!
- TOP-PERFORMING VPN Faster speeds, more server locations, and greater connection control to protect your privacy across all your devices, including Smart TVs.
- ADVANCED SCAM PROTECTION Help spot hidden scams online. With the built-in Genie AI assistant, you’ll never wonder if a message or email is suspicious again.
- REAL-TIME PROTECTION Advanced security protects against existing and emerging malware threats, including ransomware and viruses, and it won’t slow down your device performance.

Vertical tabs and Workspaces
Vertical tabs place tab controls in a side-oriented layout. Workspaces let you organize browsing into separate contexts, which can be useful when you want to keep different projects or activities apart. These features are most relevant if you routinely keep many pages open; they are less compelling if you prefer a simple horizontal tab strip and a small number of tabs.
Compact Mode, Glance, and Split View
- Compact Mode provides a more space-efficient interface.
- Glance offers previews of pages.
- Split View lets you view pages side by side.
These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature will work exactly the same across operating systems or future releases. Consult the Zen User Manual for current instructions.

- POWERFUL, LIGHTNING-FAST ANTIVIRUS: Protects your computer from viruses and malware through the cloud; Webroot scans faster, uses fewer system resources and safeguards your devices in real-time by identifying and blocking new threats
- IDENTITY THEFT PROTECTION: Protects your usernames, account numbers and other personal information against keyloggers, spyware and other online threats targeting valuable personal data
- REAL-TIME ANTI-PHISHING: Proactively scans websites, emails and other communications and warns you of potential danger before you click to effectively stop malicious attempts to steal your personal information
- ALWAYS UP TO DATE: Webroot scours 95% of the Internet three times per day including billions of web pages, files and apps to determine what is safe online and enhances the software automatically without time-consuming updates
Extensions and appearance customization
Zen supports extensions from Mozilla Add-ons, so extension availability is one of the areas to check against your needs before migrating. Its separate Zen Mods system offers interface customizations. Firefox themes are not supported, according to Zen’s Extensions documentation; a Firefox theme you already use should not be assumed to carry over.
Beta status, releases, and updates
Zen’s beta label matters: features and behavior can change as development continues. As of October 6, 2026, the official release notes listed version 1.23.1b, based on Firefox 157.0.1. Those are dated product details, not a promise that the same version remains current. Check the download page and release notes when installing.

Zen’s security page says the project tracks Firefox releases and aims to update within 0–72 hours. It also describes tracking protection and DNS over HTTPS options. These are statements from the project, not independent measurements or an audit of the browser’s security.
What Zen says about privacy and Sync
Zen’s privacy policy, last updated February 5, 2025, says it has removed Firefox telemetry and crash reports and does not collect telemetry, crash reports, IP addresses, browsing history, or search queries. The policy also describes connections Zen makes at startup for updates and other functions. So “no data collection” should not be read as “the browser makes no network connections.” The policy is Zen’s own account, not an independent privacy audit.

Firefox Sync is optional. Zen says synced data is encrypted and stored on Mozilla’s servers, under Mozilla’s privacy policy. If you enable Sync, Mozilla’s service is therefore part of the arrangement; review both companies’ policies and decide whether that setup fits your expectations. Zen’s policy is available at zen-browser.app/privacy/.
Check DRM streaming before switching
Streaming compatibility is especially important if you rely on services that require DRM. Zen’s FAQ says DRM playback is unavailable on macOS because Zen lacks a Widevine license. For Windows, the picture is more nuanced: the FAQ describes the same licensing obstacle, but release notes dated October 6, 2026, describe experimental Windows DRM playback. Treat Windows support as experimental rather than assured, and verify the particular operating system, setting, and streaming service you use.

Who should try Zen?
- Consider trying it if you want a vertical-tab workflow, separate Workspaces, or a more customizable desktop interface.
- Check first if you depend on a particular extension, Firefox theme, or DRM-protected streaming service.
- Be comfortable with beta software if you choose it: the manual says it is incomplete, and features may evolve.
- Evaluate privacy for yourself if telemetry, startup connections, or third-party sync services are deciding factors.
Zen is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux through its official download page. Linux installation guidance is also available in the Linux installation guide.
