If you want a natural toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), start with the ingredient list—not the word “natural.” Label-based examples include The Natural Dentist All in One Toothpaste and Jason Powersmile Anticavity Whitening Powerful Peppermint, both of whose cited labels describe them as SLS-free while listing fluoride. These are examples to compare, not a clinical ranking or hands-on product test; check the package you buy because formulas can change.
What SLS does in toothpaste
Sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent used to create foam. The American Dental Association says detergents such as SLS are used for foaming action that may increase the solubility of plaque and accretions during brushing. Foam is a formula feature, not proof that a toothpaste cleans better.

The ADA also says toothpaste ingredients, including SLS, may rarely cause irritation or allergic reactions. SLS is not harmful to everyone, and a person does not need to avoid it unless they have a reason to do so. If you have persistent or significant mouth symptoms, consult a dental professional rather than diagnosing the cause from symptoms alone; toothpaste-related contact reactions can be difficult to distinguish from other causes. What “SLS-free” and “natural” mean on a label
“SLS-free” refers to the absence of sodium lauryl sulfate or to a product claim about that ingredient. It does not tell you whether a toothpaste contains fluoride, and it does not mean the formula avoids every ingredient that might irritate someone.

“Natural” is a shopping descriptor, not a reliable substitute for checking ingredients. For example, the DailyMed label for Tom’s of Maine Natural Fluoride Fresh Mint, updated June 16, 2026, lists SLS among its inactive ingredients. Its cited label lists sodium fluoride 0.24% as the active ingredient. That formula is a useful reminder that “natural” does not establish SLS-free status. DailyMed: Tom’s of Maine Natural Fluoride Fresh Mint.

How to choose the right formula
Check the full ingredient list
Look specifically for “sodium lauryl sulfate,” not only a front-of-package claim. Compare the current package’s complete ingredients with the label record. Manufacturers can update formulas, and a product’s branding may stay the same after an ingredient change.
Make fluoride a separate decision
SLS-free does not mean fluoride-free. The Natural Dentist example lists sodium fluoride 0.24%, while Jason Powersmile lists sodium monofluorophosphate 0.76%. Choose based on your oral-health needs; ask a dental professional if you are unsure whether a fluoride toothpaste is appropriate for you. Do not choose fluoride-free merely to avoid SLS.

Consider other potential irritants
If you are avoiding SLS because of irritation concerns, check more than one ingredient. The ADA also names essential oils and flavorings, propylene glycol, PEG compounds, cocamidopropyl betaine, parabens, and pyrophosphates among ingredients that may cause irritation or allergic reactions. An SLS-free label does not guarantee that a formula will suit you or avoid every possible trigger.
Do not confuse similar ingredient names
Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate is a different ingredient from sodium lauryl sulfate. The DailyMed label for SprinJene Sensitivity Relief lists sodium lauryl sulfoacetate among inactive ingredients and potassium nitrate 5% as its active ingredient; the cited product is labeled fluoride-free. This illustrates why ingredient names should be read precisely, but it is not a fluoride-containing recommendation for this shortlist. DailyMed: SprinJene Sensitivity Relief Fluoride Free Toothpaste.

- Read the active ingredient panel separately to determine whether the toothpaste contains fluoride and which active ingredient and concentration are listed.
- Review other ingredients you personally need to avoid, including flavorings or other potential irritants identified by the ADA.
- Recheck the physical package at purchase, even if an online label record or an older product page appears to match.
