Certifications can be useful even when the badge itself proves little about how well someone can do the job. In a September 18, 2026 essay, Mihai Perdum describes earning two credentials in quick succession and finding very different value in their syllabuses: Jira largely formalized work he already knew, while a Claude architecture course revealed topics he had missed. His takeaway is a practical one: judge a certification by what it teaches you, not by the credential alone.
What changed Perdum’s view of certifications?
Perdum had long been skeptical of certifications. He reports earning Anthropic’s Claude Certified Architect – Foundations and Atlassian’s Jira Administration for Cloud certification (ACP-120) within days of each other. The contrast between them changed how he thought about the value of studying for a credential.

Jira put familiar work into a formal framework
In Perdum’s account, the ACP-120 syllabus mostly mapped his existing Jira Cloud administration experience to Atlassian’s terminology. It did give him some less frequently used details to review, but much of the material felt familiar.
The Claude syllabus exposed gaps
By contrast, Perdum says the Claude architecture syllabus introduced foundational patterns and supported configuration options he had not known existed, despite his prior work building agentic workflows. He found value not simply in passing an assessment, but in following a structured path across subjects his self-directed learning had not covered.

That is a personal account, not a measured comparison of learning outcomes or job performance. It does, however, suggest a useful way to assess a certification before investing time in it: inspect the syllabus for knowledge you may not realize you lack.
Are certifications worth it?
They can be worth the effort when the preparation teaches you something relevant. A certificate records completion or passing against a defined assessment; on its own, it is not strong proof that someone can handle production work. Perdum’s point is not that every certification is valuable, but that the syllabus may be valuable even when the badge is not the main benefit.

Self-directed study often follows immediate problems and interests. That can build depth quickly, but it can also leave blind spots outside the path you happened to take. A structured curriculum may help make those blind spots visible. Whether it does depends on the specific syllabus and your existing experience; Perdum’s experience does not establish a universal result.
How to decide whether a certification is worth your time
Before enrolling or scheduling an exam, compare the program with the work you need to do and the knowledge you already have.
Rank #3
- Check for real knowledge gaps. Read the syllabus and identify subjects you have not used, studied, or been assessed on. A curriculum that only renames familiar tasks may offer less learning value than one that fills gaps.
- Check relevance. Make sure the material applies to the platform, role, or kind of work you expect to do. A useful credential for one context may be a poor fit for another.
- Look for applied practice. Review whether preparation includes exercises, sample questions, or opportunities to work with the system. Study can help organize knowledge, but practical experience remains a separate part of demonstrating skill.
- Separate learning from signaling. Decide whether your priority is learning, documenting knowledge for an employer, or both. Do not assume the credential alone guarantees hiring, promotion, or stronger performance.

As of October 2026, Atlassian has announced a planned January 2027 merger of ACP-120 and ACP-620. ACP-620 is expected to retire, with selected material incorporated into an updated ACP-120. Atlassian’s announcement gives January 8, 2027 as the target date to take ACP-620 before retirement. Because this is a scheduled change, not a permanent exam structure, check Atlassian’s current credential information before choosing study materials or booking an exam.
