I Deployed My First AgentCore Harness and Asked It, “Is Production Healthy?”

A first CloudOps agent refused to call production healthy without live evidence. Here’s what the AgentCore Harness experiment reveals about tools, security, deployment, and versioned rollouts.

“My first CloudOps agent gave me the right answer by refusing to answer,” writes DevOps engineer Lalit Bagga. In his account, the agent could not verify whether production was healthy because the experiment had no live infrastructure or monitoring tools connected to it. That response is the useful result: deploying an agent loop is not the same as giving an agent evidence about a running system.

What the first AgentCore Harness experiment actually tested

Bagga describes a deliberately limited CloudOps agent: a narrow system prompt, Amazon Nova Micro after an account-specific model-access issue with his initial model choice, no external infrastructure tools configured by him, and AgentCore Memory disabled. When asked, “Is production healthy?”, it said it could not verify current state without infrastructure and monitoring evidence. The reproduced article reports that prompt-pressure attempts did not create the missing access. These are the author’s reported observations, not independently reproduced results. The prompt included the rule: “Never claim that an environment is healthy or unhealthy without current tool evidence.” That is a sensible guardrail, but it is not a substitute for tools. A prompt can constrain what an agent should claim; it cannot supply live metrics, logs, deployment status, or permissions that were never configured.

Why deploying a harness does not establish production health

AWS describes AgentCore Harness as a managed orchestration loop: it calls the model, selects and runs tools, returns results, manages context, and handles failures. A harness can be configured with a model, tools, skills, and instructions, alongside AgentCore capabilities for areas such as identity, networking, memory, and observability. Those building blocks do not automatically grant access to a production environment. The operator still has to choose data sources, permissions, and the questions the agent is allowed to answer. For a CloudOps agent, a defensible health answer needs current, relevant evidence. Depending on the question, that might include service health checks, deployment status, error rates, logs, database performance, and user-facing signals. A read-only tool that retrieves a clearly bounded set of such data is a better starting point than broad access to infrastructure. The reproduced article mentions a possible future Lambda tool for reading deployment status, but does not report that it was built or validated. Source: reproduced article attributed to Lalit Bagga.

Deployment issues Bagga reports—and what they do not prove

The reproduced account describes several setup-specific obstacles. A descriptive harness name became too long when the CLI assembled the physical resource name, and infrastructure synthesis failed; shortening the name resolved that particular issue. The author also reports needing AWS bootstrap in his environment and encountering an account-specific model-access prerequisite for his initial model choice. These are lessons from that setup, not universal requirements for every AgentCore deployment or model.

Bagga says agentcore dev validated the project, synchronized CDK dependencies, built and synthesized the CDK project, checked bootstrap and stack status, and persisted deployment state. The command name does not make its effects local or harmless. Before running a deployment command, verify the AWS account and region it will target, inspect the changes it will make, and understand which resources and permissions are involved. Beurer Cardio Companion EKG Monitor - 3-Lead Portable ECG Machine, Detects Irregular Heart Rhythms, Fast Results in 30 Seconds, Bluetooth with App, Rechargeable Battery, ME75
  • Accurate and Reliable: German-engineered for precision and FDA-cleared, this 3-lead EKG monitor measures your heart rhythm in under 30 seconds, with real-time results on the bright, color display.
  • 4-Ways to Measure: Hand-to-hand measuring is recommended, but you can also measure hand to wrist, leg, or chest. Do not have skin-to-skin contact while measuring, as it will affect accuracy.
  • Heart Rhythm Analysis: Real-time monitoring of your heart rate alerts you if an irregular heart rate or arrhythmia is detected, allowing you to reliably monitor your heart health from the comfort and privacy of your home.
  • Optional App: Save up to 100 readings locally on the ME75 device, or store unlimited readings through the mini ECG app via Bluetooth. The free app is optional for health tracking and heart monitoring, and is not required for device use.
  • Rechargeable: Small, portable device with a USB-B rechargeable battery. This device is not suitable for those with pacemakers, metal implants, or other implants that emit an electrical pulse.

Same-session context is not proof of durable memory

The experiment’s author says AgentCore Memory was disabled. He separately describes context continuing within the same session. Those observations do not demonstrate that information was stored and retrieved across sessions, so they should not be read as a test of durable memory. If an agent must remember information beyond its current interaction, that behavior needs to be explicitly configured and tested.

Inspecting traces, logs, and cleanup

Bagga reports that the CLI trace and log commands did not find a runtime in his project layout, where the resource was declared under harnesses rather than runtimes. He then investigated CloudWatch directly and describes finding an account-setup delay related to Transaction Search. This is his tooling experience, not evidence of a general CLI defect or a guaranteed CloudWatch setup issue. AWS’s Harness guide documents tracing and observability separately. Source: reproduced article attributed to Lalit Bagga; AWS: AgentCore Harness developer guide.

The author also says he removed the harness deployment while retaining local project files. Account-level bootstrap resources and CloudWatch evidence can have lifecycles separate from an application’s harness resource; deleting one deployment should not be treated as proof that every supporting resource or artifact has been removed. Check the account for what remains before considering cleanup complete. Source: reproduced article attributed to Lalit Bagga.

Choosing a managed Harness or an agent loop in code

AWS documents both a managed Harness configuration and options to use a custom container or export an agent loop to code. The choice depends on how much of the loop you need to control and how much infrastructure work you want to own.

Consideration Managed Harness Custom container or code export
Agent loop AWS manages the configured loop that coordinates model calls, tools, context, and failures. You can own or adapt the loop in code; AWS documents custom-container and export paths.
Infrastructure work Uses the managed harness path, while still requiring configuration of the agent’s capabilities and access. Offers more implementation control but puts more loop and deployment decisions in your hands.
Tools, skills, and memory Configured as part of the harness and its AgentCore capabilities. Can be implemented or configured in the code-based approach; the documentation does not make one path universally preferable.
Observability and operations Harness documentation describes managed observability; deployment and access still need operator attention. Greater control over implementation means you must account for the operational choices your design requires.

AWS says there is no separate charge for the harness itself; billing depends on the underlying AgentCore capabilities used. That does not mean a deployed system has no cost. AWS: AgentCore Harness developer guide; AWS: AgentCore overview.

Use versioned endpoints to control rollout

AWS’s versioning model creates immutable configuration versions. The DEFAULT endpoint follows the latest version, while a named endpoint can remain pinned to a selected version until an operator changes it. A production workflow can use that distinction to validate a new configuration separately, move a named endpoint after review, and point it back to an earlier version if rollback is needed. Security still depends on the access you grant

AWS says each session in AgentCore Runtime runs in its own Firecracker microVM and that a harness assumes an IAM execution role. Isolation is one security primitive, not a complete security guarantee: the operator configures permissions and networking. AWS advises scoping production permissions to the resource ARNs the harness needs rather than granting broad wildcard access. For a health-check agent, begin with narrowly scoped, read-only access and make its evidence sources explicit. AWS: AgentCore security guidance.

What this experiment can—and cannot—tell you

The reported experiment illustrates a valuable boundary: an agent without live system evidence should not confidently pronounce production healthy. It does not establish that Bagga built a production-monitoring agent, connected operational data sources, or validated a health assessment against a real environment. The practical next step is not to make the prompt more forceful; it is to provide current, trustworthy evidence through deliberately scoped tools, then test whether the agent’s conclusions remain grounded in those results.
