The setting most likely behind this change is Custom Instructions: a place to tell ChatGPT what it should know about you and how you prefer it to respond. It can make recurring guidance more relevant, but it cannot guarantee specific or accurate answers—and the headline describes a personal experience, not a result everyone should expect.
What Custom Instructions change
Custom Instructions let you provide guidance ChatGPT can consider across conversations, such as your role, recurring goals, preferred tone, and useful answer format. OpenAI describes them as a way to share what you would like ChatGPT to consider in its responses. They are best for stable preferences, rather than facts that apply only to one question.

OpenAI Academy recommends using personalization for durable details such as role, tone, output types, and guardrails. For a one-off task, give the relevant context in that conversation. For example, a standing preference to receive concise steps may be useful across chats; the budget and deadline for this week’s project belong in the prompt about that project.
How to set up Custom Instructions
- Open settings. On web or desktop, open your profile menu and select Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions. On iOS or Android, OpenAI documents the path as Settings → Customize ChatGPT.
- Enable customization if prompted. The exact control and labels can differ by platform or workspace.
- Add stable, useful guidance. Include details that should shape many answers, such as your role, audience, recurring project, constraints, or preferred level of detail.
- Save or apply the changes. Then start a chat and provide any facts specific to that request.
OpenAI says Custom Instructions are available on all plans across web, desktop, iOS, and Android. Workspace configuration and interface wording can still vary, so use the controls shown in your account.

A practical starter instruction
The following is an editorial example, not wording prescribed by OpenAI. Replace the bracketed details with information that will remain useful across chats:
When you answer, first use the context I provide: [my role, goal, and recurring constraints]. Avoid generic advice. Give me [the output format I prefer]. Make recommendations concrete by explaining the next action and why it fits my situation. If key context is missing, ask up to two focused questions before recommending a solution. If you are uncertain, say what is uncertain.
Keep the instruction focused. A few relevant details are more useful than a long biography. Do not put sensitive information into persistent instructions unless you have considered your account and data settings. Custom Instructions can guide how ChatGPT approaches a request, but they do not supply every fact needed to answer it.
How to refine the result
- Choose a familiar task you ask about regularly and note what a useful answer should include.
- Try the task with your new instructions, supplying the same task-specific facts you normally would.
- If the response is still broad, identify one missing preference or constraint and add it to the instructions.
- Try the task again, changing one instruction at a time so you can tell which wording seems helpful.
- For a single unusual request, add context directly to the prompt instead of making a temporary detail part of your standing settings.
OpenAI’s prompting guidance favors clear, specific wording and iterative refinement. This process can help you tune your preferences, but it is not a controlled test and does not promise a particular outcome.

Which personalization control should you use?
| Control | What it supplies | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Custom Instructions | Explicit guidance about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond. | Stable role, context, preferences, and response format. |
| Memory | Relevant context that may develop across chats and, depending on availability, other sources. | Context you want ChatGPT to remember rather than spell out in every prompt. |
| Personality | A selected response style or tone. | A broad preference for how replies sound. OpenAI says it does not change what ChatGPT can do or its safety rules. |
| Characteristics | Adjustable response traits such as warmth, enthusiasm, formatting, and emoji use. | Fine-tuning aspects of style alongside personality, instructions, and memories. |
| Temporary Chat | A temporary conversation that can be set to Personalized or Unpersonalized before the first message. | A chat where you want the unpersonalized option; OpenAI says it does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins in that chat. |
These controls are related but not interchangeable: a tone preference is not project context, and saved context is not a substitute for explaining the current task. OpenAI notes that Memory features and controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Turning Memory off does not delete past chats, and removing information may require addressing each place where it exists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why advice may still sound generic
- The question lacks key context. Instructions cannot infer details you have not provided. State your goal, constraints, audience, and what you have already tried when they matter.
- The standing instruction is too vague. “Be helpful” gives little direction. Name the response format, level of detail, or kind of next step you want.
- The preference applies only once. Put one-off facts in the current prompt rather than relying on a persistent setting.
- Other style or context controls affect the reply. Personality, Characteristics, and Memory have separate roles and may work alongside instructions.
Custom Instructions are guidance, not a guarantee that every answer will be tailored, correct, or complete. Review important recommendations and supply additional context when a response misses what matters to you.
