If “better exploration” means more freedom to choose a route, more reasons to investigate a world, or a different kind of discovery, these seven games are strong alternatives to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. They are not a universal upgrade: some trade dungeons for open-world roaming, some make combat central, and others keep exploration compact and puzzle-led.
The list includes another Zelda because Breath of the Wild takes the series in a notably open-ended direction. The other picks range from the dangerous expanses of Elden Ring to the quiet wandering of Sable. Choose by the kind of exploration you want, not by treating this as a definitive ranking.

What “better exploration” means here
Ocarina of Time offers a guided adventure shaped by dungeons, puzzles, and items that open new paths. The games below emphasize different qualities: choosing your own route, finding secrets, interacting with the environment, or interpreting clues. A more open map is not automatically a better fit if what you want most is a carefully paced dungeon journey.
| Game | Exploration strength | Best fit if you want | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring | Open-world travel, dungeons, and hidden mysteries | A large, dangerous fantasy world to investigate | Combat difficulty and action-RPG focus |
| The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | Freedom to choose routes and destinations | Player-directed discovery in a Zelda world | Less of the tightly directed dungeon progression associated with Ocarina of Time |
| Eternal Strands | Climbing and environmental interaction with magic | Experimenting with traversal and the world | Action-adventure emphasis; it is not a proven superior design |
| Sable | Open-world wandering at a contemplative pace | Atmosphere and roaming without combat | Not for players seeking combat challenges |
| Genshin Impact | Open-world discovery, puzzles, and secrets using character powers | A broad adventure with ability-based exploration | Free-to-play structure includes gacha mechanics |
| Tunic | Secret hunting and clues hidden in a cryptic manual | Inference and careful observation | Some discoveries are deliberately obscure |
| Chicory: A Colorful Tale | Compact, top-down exploration through towns, dungeons, and puzzles | Puzzle-led discovery rather than a huge open world | Smaller-scale exploration |
1. Elden Ring: exploration with real danger
Elden Ring is an open-world, single-player action RPG in which exploration takes you across the Lands Between and, in the expansion’s setting, the Land of Shadow. Bandai Namco describes its world as a place to explore through vast maps and dungeons: Bandai Namco’s game overview.

Its appeal is the uncertainty of travel. A destination can lead to a dungeon, a hidden mystery, or a dangerous encounter, and the world does not feel like a safe playground. That makes it a compelling choice if discovery is more satisfying when you have to survive it.
The tradeoff is substantial: combat is central, and difficulty is part of the experience. If you want Ocarina-style exploration mainly for its puzzles and readable progression, Elden Ring is a genre shift rather than a direct substitute.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: the clearest route-freedom upgrade
Breath of the Wild belongs on a list framed around Ocarina of Time because it is another Zelda game—and because it changes how the series invites you to move through a world. Nintendo says, “Explore the landscape of Hyrule any way you like.” The official page describes climbing towers and mountain peaks to find destinations, using the Sheikah Slate to map points of interest, and traveling by horse, raft, shield-surfing, and paraglider: Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild page.

A visible landmark can become a destination simply because you decide to reach it. The Sheikah Slate helps you mark what catches your eye, but the choice of where to go remains yours.

- Includes both Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, plus all single-player DLC.
- Become the most feared pirate in the Caribbean in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. Take part in an award-winning naval experience and explore a massive open world.
- Become the ultimate assassin hunter in Assassin’s Creed Rogue, and play as a Templar for the first time in franchise history.
- Additional bonus content: Black Beard: The Lost Journal (pp. 1– 55) and Assassin’s Creed: Awakening Volumes 1 & 2.
- Experience enhanced features like handheld mode, HD Rumble, a touch screen interface, and motion control aiming.
That openness suits players who want to set their own pace and direction. If the appeal of Ocarina of Time for you is its guided dungeon structure and progression, however, the more player-directed approach may feel less focused.
3. Eternal Strands: experiment with traversal and the environment
Eternal Strands is an action-adventure for players who enjoy trying abilities on the world around them. GamesRadar+ describes wall-climbing reminiscent of Breath of the Wild, alongside physics interaction and magic that affects the environment: GamesRadar+’s exploration recommendations.
Its exploration pitch is less about an established claim that its world is “better” and more about the kinds of questions it encourages: can you climb there, or can an ability change how you approach the space? Consider it if environmental experimentation sounds more rewarding than simply following a marked path.

4. Sable: unhurried exploration without combat
Sable is the most peaceful choice here. GamesRadar+ characterizes it as an open-world, non-combat adventure with a contemplative pace and a world that encourages exploration. That makes it a good match if you want to roam for atmosphere and curiosity rather than fight your way through every discovery.

- Explore a Massive World: Meet Hello Kitty and Friends across distinct biomes with more than 100 hours of adventure and affecting stories to experience. Brave Kuromi’s haunted mansion in the Spooky Swamp, unearth ancient secrets with Retsuko in fiery Mount Hothead, grow rare flowers with Wish me mell in the Merry Meadows, discover new treasures underwater in Rainbow Reef, and so much more.
- Be Who You Want: Express yourself as an original, Sanrio-style avatar with a wide range of adorable character customization options. Select from dozens of faces, features, and body shapes, then collect hundreds of clothing items. Change your appearance at any time.
- Craft, Create, Collect: Bake delicious recipes with Hello Kitty, brew magic potions with Kuromi, collect critters with Keroppi, learn to fish from Badtz-maru, and so much more. Share gifts and complete quests to deepen your friendship with even more beloved characters.
- Team Up in Multiplayer: Everything is better with friends. Invite other players to your island and complete multiplayer challenges to boost each other’s stamina, solve the island’s trickiest puzzles, chase new high scores, or build beautiful vacation homes together. Multiplayer guests can even decorate their own Friendship Cabins on your island.
The absence of combat is a defining tradeoff, not a minor omission. If danger and battles are part of what makes exploration engaging for you, another game on this list will be a closer fit.
5. Genshin Impact: discover with character abilities
Genshin Impact offers an open-world adventure with puzzles and secrets that the editorial source compares to the feel of Breath of the Wild. Character powers play a role in discovering and solving things, so exploration can involve thinking about which abilities to use as well as where to go.
The game is free-to-play and includes a gacha structure. That does not mean all content is paid, but it is relevant to the experience: players who prefer a conventional, self-contained purchase may want to weigh that model before committing to it. Current monetization details are not established here.

6. Tunic: explore by reading between the lines
Tunic is an isometric, Zelda-inspired adventure whose world is also a mystery to interpret. A cryptic instruction manual is part of the discovery: finding information and working out what it means are central to the appeal. GamesRadar+ lists Nintendo Switch among its platforms and reports an optional invincibility mode for players who want to focus on exploration.
Rank #4
- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dyno herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
This is a strong pick if you enjoy close observation and drawing conclusions from incomplete clues. Its secrets can be deliberately obscure, so it may frustrate players who expect every important path or objective to be clearly signposted.
7. Chicory: A Colorful Tale: small-scale exploration led by puzzles
Chicory: A Colorful Tale trades a sprawling open world for a compact, top-down adventure. GamesRadar+ describes towns, dungeons, and puzzles that use paintbrush abilities; Nintendo Switch is among the listed platforms. The result is a fit for players who want places to explore and problems to solve without needing a huge map.
Pick it for puzzle-led discovery and a distinctive way to interact with the world, not for the scale or route freedom of a large open-world game.
Which game should you try first?
- For the most freedom to choose a route: Breath of the Wild.
- For a dangerous fantasy world with dungeons and mysteries: Elden Ring.
- For environmental experimentation: Eternal Strands.
- For quiet, combat-free roaming: Sable.
- For ability-based exploration in a free-to-play game: Genshin Impact.
- For cryptic secrets and inference: Tunic.
- For compact exploration built around puzzles: Chicory: A Colorful Tale.
If none fits, Nintendo Life also discusses Hyper Light Drifter, Elliot Quest, Ittle Dew 2+, and Crystalis as alternatives: Nintendo Life’s games for Zelda fans. Its notes flag that Elliot Quest can be unclear in its direction, while Ittle Dew 2+ channels 2D Zelda-style exploration.
