Changing your car’s engine type in Google Maps can make its fuel- or energy-efficient route suggestions better match how your vehicle is powered. On Android, open your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings > Your vehicles and select the appropriate engine type. The separate control for efficient routing is under Settings > Navigation > Route options.
What changing the engine type actually does
Google Maps uses the selected engine category when estimating which route may use less fuel or energy. This is a vehicle-profile setting—not a detailed make-and-model selection for ordinary efficient route recommendations. How to choose the right engine type
Choose according to how the vehicle is primarily powered. Google’s categories distinguish conventional engines, hybrids, and electric vehicles; plug-in hybrids fall into different categories depending on whether they mostly run on fuel or electricity. - Gas or Diesel: An internal-combustion vehicle.
- Gas: A vehicle that runs on CNG or LPG.
- Hybrid: A hybrid or plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on fuel.
- Electric: An electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid that mostly runs on electricity.
Change the setting on Android
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings > Your vehicles.
- Select the engine type that best describes your car.
To turn efficient routing on or off, open Settings > Navigation > Route options and toggle Prefer fuel-efficient routes. How Maps weighs an efficient route against the fastest one
The efficient option is not automatically the quickest. Google says its estimate takes account of average regional vehicle consumption, hills, stop-and-go traffic, and road type, as well as real-time traffic, route simplicity, and road conditions. Maps may show the fastest and most efficient routes together. It recommends the efficient route when its arrival time is roughly similar to the fastest; if the savings are small or the trip takes significantly longer, Maps may show relative savings so you can compare.
Compare the estimated arrival times and any relative-savings information on the route choices. These are estimates, not a promise of a particular amount of fuel or energy saved; the available information does not establish a personal savings percentage for your car.

What electric-car drivers should know
Google explicitly says energy-efficient routes for electric vehicles do not include charging stops. Check charging needs separately before setting out. A compatible saved EV profile can help with compatible plug searches and an estimate of trip battery usage, but Google says that estimate depends on the vehicle information entered and does not adjust to real-time driving conditions or a live connection to the car. Why the option may be missing
Google says eco-friendly routing is available only in select countries or regions. If the efficient-route preference or relevant engine setting is not available in your app, regional availability may be the reason. When the efficient-routing feature is off, Google says, “you’ll get the fastest route and Google Maps won’t factor in fuel or energy efficiency for route recommendations.” Google Maps Help, Android instructions
