I Built an Android Privacy Setup Google Doesn’t Give You Out of the Box

Android includes controls for auditing app permissions, limiting location precision, and spotting camera or microphone access. Here’s how to find and tune them on your phone.

Android already includes privacy controls; the work is knowing where to find them and choosing what each app actually needs. Use this guide to check recent access, limit camera, microphone, and location permissions, and keep your settings current. The exact labels and features vary by Android version and phone maker, so search Settings for a control if the path below does not match your phone.

Find Android’s privacy controls

Open Settings and search for Privacy Dashboard or Permission manager. On Pixel phones, Google lists both under security and privacy settings; other manufacturers may organize them differently. See Google’s Pixel security and privacy settings guide for Pixel-specific menu information.

Android’s built-in permission controls let you review and change access to sensitive data. The menu names, available choices, and feature support depend on your Android version and device.

Review which apps recently used sensitive permissions

Open Privacy Dashboard and select a permission category, such as location, camera, or microphone, to see which apps accessed it. Google documents a history of the last seven days on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12. Those time windows should not be assumed for every Android release or manufacturer interface. Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions explain the version-specific history.

Use the history as a prompt to review an app’s access, not as a full record of everything it may collect. Indicators and dashboards show certain kinds of access; they do not account for every data collection or transmission an app might perform.

Audit app permissions and choose the least access that works

Review permissions by app or by category in Permission manager. For each app, ask whether its purpose requires that access. A photo editor may need access to selected photos, for example, but that does not automatically mean it needs your location or microphone.

  • Choose Allow only while using the app when access is needed only during active use.
  • Choose Ask every time or Only this time when you want to decide at each use, if that option is available.
  • Choose Don’t allow when the feature works without the permission or you do not want the app to have access.

The exact options vary by permission, Android version, and device. If denying a permission disables a feature you rely on, you can revisit that app’s permission and grant only what is needed.

Use approximate location unless an app needs precision

Android supports giving an app approximate rather than precise location. Approximate location can be enough for features that need a general area; navigation and some other location-sensitive functions may require a more exact position. Decide separately for each app instead of setting one rule for all of them.

When an app requests location, inspect the available precision and duration options before granting access. You can change the decision later in the app’s location permission settings. Google’s Android privacy and permissions overview describes approximate location and permission choices.

Watch for camera, microphone, and location access

Android displays privacy indicators when apps use the camera, microphone, or location, and users can tap indicators to see which apps accessed those data sources. Their behavior and availability can vary with Android version and device. The indicators are a useful immediate signal, not a complete inventory of all the information an app handles.

Some devices also offer system-wide camera and microphone access switches in Settings or Quick Settings. Search Settings for Camera access or Microphone access, or inspect Quick Settings for the corresponding tile; do not assume every phone exposes the same control or path. The Android Open Source Project documents platform behavior and version-specific details in its privacy indicators documentation.

Review apps you no longer use

Android can automatically reset permissions for unused apps. Treat that as a backstop, not a substitute for checking access now: an app you still use may retain permissions you no longer consider necessary. Google’s privacy overview describes the automatic reset feature.

Check Play disclosures before installing

Google Play’s Data safety section provides disclosures about what data an app may access and use. Read it as one input alongside the permissions the app requests, not as a guarantee that the app is risk-free or that its practices will suit your needs. The Android privacy overview explains where Google presents these disclosures.

Install available system updates

Check whether your phone has an Android operating system update available. On Pixel, Google includes checking for system updates among its security and privacy actions; other manufacturers may use different menu labels and update schedules. Update availability depends on the device and its support period. Refer to Google’s Pixel settings guide for Pixel-specific guidance.

What consent does—and does not—mean

The Android 15 Compatibility Definition requires an implementation to obtain user consent for app access to location or physical activity data, subject to the document’s platform and device-management provisions. That is a platform compatibility requirement, not a guarantee that every app is harmless or that approving a permission is always the right choice. See the Android 15 Compatibility Definition for its scope and conditions.
