Polter is a terminal fork with an MCP layer that lets an AI coding CLI supervise other CLI sessions. Its creator says the project grew out of overnight runs in which workers stopped after network errors or decided they were finished, while handoffs between sub-agents proved unreliable. Polter adds terminal controls, a shared task list and group chat, plus nudges when a worker or supervisor goes quiet. The creator also describes firm limits: it does not answer permission prompts, unlock tabs the user locked, or bypass a CLI’s own permissions.
Why build a supervisor for overnight CLI work?
In a September 15, 2026 project article, builder Lugiax describes running Claude Code, Codex and Qwen in parallel. The problem, in that account, was not simply keeping several agents visible. During overnight work, an agent might quit after a network error or decide on its own that it was done; handoffs between sub-agents could also fail. The builder found that existing tools showed multiple agents but did not make one agent responsible for coordinating the others.

That is the motivation behind Polter, as the builder presents it—not a claim that every multi-agent tool has the same shortcomings, or that overnight jobs can be guaranteed to finish.

The builder describes Polter as a Ghostty fork with an MCP layer. An MCP-capable CLI can serve as the supervisor: it can open terminal tabs, start other coding CLIs, type into their sessions and read what appears on screen. That gives the supervising agent a way to interact with workers running in separate terminal sessions rather than relying only on messages passed between agents.

Workers can report to a group chat and use a shared task list. In the intended workflow, those shared spaces give the supervisor and workers a common place to communicate and track work, alongside direct terminal control.
What happens when an agent goes quiet?
Polter is described as watching for inactivity in both directions. If a worker’s screen goes quiet, the supervisor is notified. If the supervisor itself goes quiet, Polter nudges it. The idea is to surface a stall or apparent stop so that the run can be checked; the article does not establish that every pause is an error or that a nudge will resolve the underlying cause.

What Polter will not do
The builder says three boundaries are hard-coded:
- Polter will not answer a CLI’s permission prompts for an agent.
- It will not unlock a terminal tab the user has locked.
- It will not bypass the permissions enforced by the CLI itself.
Those limits matter because terminal supervision can involve actions with real consequences. In the described design, supervision is not permission to silently approve actions or override the user’s controls.
Which CLI supervisor paths were tested?
The article draws an important distinction between using a CLI as a worker and using it as the supervisor. Lugiax says “only Claude Code is tested end-to-end as supervisor.” Codex, Qwen and opencode are described as working as workers, but their supervisor paths were untested in that account. That is narrower than saying all four CLIs can reliably supervise other sessions.

What platform support did the builder report?
In the September 2026 article, the builder reports macOS and Windows support, with Linux available from source. The author says 63 of 72 actions were available on Windows, meaning nine were missing in the project’s reported Windows coverage at that time. The article also notes that changes from upstream Ghostty are merged with some lag. These are dated project statements, not independently verified details of the current release.

The same article compares Polter with Claude Code Agent View, cmux, herdr and Claude Squad, using information the author says came from those projects’ READMEs or documentation as of September 2026. Its comparison considers supported CLIs, terminal control, whether one agent supervises others, idle notifications, platform coverage, and offline or account requirements. Treat those distinctions as the author’s dated documentation-based comparison, not as an independent benchmark or a guarantee about current versions; check each project’s own documentation before choosing a tool.
