Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallI built a lightweight time-tracking web utility to make a small but error-prone task easier: turning clock time into decimal hours and doing the arithmetic around work shifts. The key is that clock minutes are base 60, while decimal hours are base 10. Seven hours and 45 minutes is 7.75 hours—not 7.45.
Why decimal-hour calculations trip people up
Clock notation and decimal notation represent time differently. In a clock-style duration such as 7:45, the 45 means 45 minutes out of an hour. In a decimal value such as 7.75, the digits after the decimal point represent a fraction of an hour. Treating the minutes as decimal digits is the common arithmetic mistake: 7:45 is not 7.45 hours.

The conversion is straightforward once the units are explicit:
- Decimal hours = whole hours + minutes ÷ 60.
- If seconds matter, add seconds ÷ 3,600 to that result.
For example, 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes equals 7.75 decimal hours. Likewise, 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5, so 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 decimal hours. These are arithmetic examples, not measured statistics. CalculatorSoup’s decimal-time conversion guidance describes the same base-60-to-base-10 conversion.

Work-time math needs a consistent order
A shift calculation often involves more than converting a duration: determine elapsed time, subtract any unpaid break, add the worked time to other shifts, and then convert the resulting total to decimal hours. Keeping those operations in that order makes it easier to see what each number means.
Example: subtract a break before converting
- Find elapsed time between clock-in and clock-out.
- Subtract the break duration in minutes if the break is unpaid.
- Convert the remaining worked duration to decimal hours.
- For several shifts, add the worked durations consistently, then convert the total.
For instance, from 7:30 to 16:15 is 8 hours 45 minutes elapsed. Subtracting a 45-minute unpaid break leaves 8 worked hours, or 8.0 decimal hours. A time-card calculator directory describes this clock-time, break, and decimal-total workflow; its examples are vendor-published, not independent testing. See the calculator’s time-card workflow.

What a lightweight utility is—and is not
I built a small web utility for the calculation itself: a quick way to handle decimal conversion and related labor arithmetic without treating clock notation as decimal notation. That is a different job from maintaining an ongoing timekeeping record. A calculator can help with a one-off shift or total; a timekeeping system may retain entries and support handoff or export workflows. Feature claims on vendor pages should be understood as the vendors’ descriptions, not independent validation. Clockify describes its time-tracking and timesheet functions here.
For a quick tool, useful questions are whether it accepts the inputs you actually have—hours and minutes, seconds, clock-in/out times, breaks, or weekly totals—and whether its output is easy to check or copy. If the work requires persistent entries, payroll handoff, or exports, a calculator alone may not be enough. Those are different requirements, not reasons to add complexity to a small conversion utility.

Decimal conversion is separate from rounding and compliance
Converting an exact duration into decimal hours does not establish a rounding policy, determine whether every minute is compensable, or make a timekeeping process legally compliant. Those are separate questions.
In the United States, the Department of Labor says employers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act must keep required hours and wage information. Its Fact Sheet #21 states: “Any timekeeping plan is acceptable as long as it is complete and accurate.” The sheet lists three years for payroll records and two years for records used to compute wages; it was revised in July 2008 and describes itself as general information, not an official statement of position with force and effect of law. Read Fact Sheet #21 on FLSA recordkeeping. The Department also explains that the FLSA does not prescribe one particular record form where the employer’s method is complete and accurate. See the Department’s recordkeeping guidance.

Rounding is another matter. In Opinion Letter FLSA2026-8, the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division discusses the regulation’s requirement that rounding “will not result, over a period of time, in failure to compensate the employees properly for all the time they have actually worked.” That is a U.S. federal interpretation, not a conversion rule; applicable obligations can depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. Read Opinion Letter FLSA2026-8. A decimal display should not be mistaken for permission to round actual work time or discard precision.

Choosing between a calculator and ongoing timekeeping
| Need | What fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A single conversion or occasional shift calculation | A lightweight calculator or utility | Whether it handles the relevant inputs, breaks, and totals clearly |
| Repeated daily or weekly entries | A timekeeping or timesheet system | Whether records persist and whether needed exports or payroll workflows are supported |
| Employer recordkeeping in the U.S. FLSA context | A process that preserves required, complete, and accurate information | Applicable record requirements and any separate rounding policy |
The distinction is practical: use a converter to answer a calculation; use a recordkeeping workflow when the entries themselves must be maintained and managed.
