Yes—an endpoint can run a lightweight security agent within a 50 MB RAM budget, but that does not mean a complete SIEM or SOAR platform fits. Wazuh says its endpoint agent uses 35 MB of RAM on average; its central server, indexer, and dashboard need a separate, much larger resource budget. A practical lean SecOps workflow keeps collection on the constrained device and moves search, analysis, and orchestration to a suitably sized host or managed service.
What does “under 50 MB RAM” apply to?
It is a realistic constraint for an endpoint agent or a narrowly scoped utility—not a full security operations stack. Wazuh describes its agent as software that runs on the endpoints being monitored and communicates with a Wazuh server over an encrypted, authenticated channel. The agent can collect logs and perform other endpoint security functions. Wazuh’s current agent documentation states an average RAM use of 35 MB, not a guaranteed peak or an independent benchmark. A SIEM server is different: it receives and analyzes events, while indexing and dashboards add further central services. Those components should not be treated as part of the agent’s 35 MB figure.

Can a SIEM run on a low-memory device?
A low-memory device can act as a monitored endpoint, but the cited Wazuh sizing guidance does not support running its full central stack inside a 50 MB limit. Wazuh’s quickstart describes a central deployment comprising the server, indexer, and dashboard. For a same-host quickstart covering 1–25 agents, it recommends 8 GiB of RAM. Separately, its server installation guide lists 2 GB as the minimum for the server component. These are different figures for different scopes: the minimum listed for the server alone is not a sizing recommendation for the whole quickstart stack. Actual central capacity depends on endpoint count, event and alert volume, storage, and deployment architecture. Treat the published numbers as starting points, not a guarantee that a particular workload will perform well.
How to build a lean monitoring workflow
- Separate endpoint and central workloads. Keep the constrained endpoint’s budget for its agent and essential local functions. Put search, indexing, dashboards, and any orchestration on a separate host or managed service sized for the event volume.
- Collect only useful telemetry. Decide what security question each enabled log source or file/system monitoring function answers. Watch endpoint load and incoming log volume, then reduce noisy, redundant, or irrelevant collection.
- Forward events securely. Use the agent-to-server channel, protect credentials and network paths, and set local buffering and retention to fit the device’s available memory and storage. Avoid letting a central outage turn into unbounded local accumulation.
- Begin with a small set of detections. Select Sigma rules whose intended log sources match the events you actually collect. Convert them for your chosen backend, check field mappings, and test against representative data. Keep rule provenance and version history so changes can be reviewed and rolled back.
- Triage with context. Sigma severity helps prioritize attention; its specification recommends immediate review of high and critical detections. Corroborate an alert with related endpoint or network events before escalating, and record an owner, next action, and supporting evidence.
- Add network visibility only where it fits. Suricata provides signature-based IDS/IPS, protocol logging, file extraction, and EVE JSON output that can feed other tools. Run it on a sensor able to handle the traffic and selected rules, then forward chosen EVE events to the analysis environment. Its feature documentation does not establish a memory footprint or throughput guarantee for a device under 50 MB, so do not assume it belongs on the constrained endpoint. Suricata features
- Monitor the workflow itself. Track agent health, missed or dropped events, alert noise, and whether response actions are completed. A quiet dashboard is not proof of coverage if the endpoint stopped sending data.
What to compare when choosing a design
| Design question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which component uses the stated memory? | Agent, network sensor, and central platform are distinct workloads. Compare like with like rather than treating endpoint-agent RAM as whole-platform RAM. |
| What visibility is needed? | Endpoint events and network traffic answer different questions; network visibility adds a separate sensor workload. |
| Where do storage and indexing happen? | Central retention and search require resources beyond those reserved for an endpoint agent. |
| Will detections work with the available data and backend? | Portable Sigma rules still need conversion, field mapping, and validation against the chosen log source and analysis system. |
| Can people review the resulting alerts? | Broad collection and untuned rules can create noise and analyst burden; prioritize useful detections and assign clear follow-up. |
| How much response capability is required? | Automated response can add operational complexity. Decide which actions are safe to automate and who owns investigation and escalation. |
Version and configuration considerations
The Sigma getting-started guide says sigma-cli requires Python 3.9 or later. Check the guide for current installation and usage details before configuring rule conversion. Sigma documentation

What the published figures do—and do not—establish
The Wazuh figure is an average for its endpoint agent. It is not a peak-memory limit, a promise for every operating system or workload, or evidence that the central Wazuh platform fits under 50 MB. The cited sources also do not establish a universal sub-50-MB SecOps configuration or guarantee performance for a specific endpoint, event rate, or Suricata deployment.
