A Raspberry Pi can be used as a home-network “black box,” but it cannot automatically record every device’s traffic just because it is connected to the network. What it captures depends on the interface it listens to and how that interface is positioned in the network. The practical approach is to save packet data to named files, limit how much is retained, and open those files in Wireshark for analysis.
What a home-network “black box” can—and cannot—record
In Wireshark’s words, “Dumpcap is a network traffic dump tool. It lets you capture packet data from a live network and write the packets to a file.” That describes the core idea: capture packets from a live interface, save them, and inspect them later. It does not mean a Raspberry Pi sees every packet exchanged by every device on a home network.

A capture is tied to a selected interface and to the traffic that reaches that interface. The build’s exact capture point and network layout determine what is visible. Before treating a recording as a complete history, establish which connection the Pi uses and which packets that connection can actually observe. Wireshark’s dumpcap manual documents live capture from selected interfaces; it does not establish that any one Pi placement sees all network traffic.

Start by identifying the interface that will receive the traffic you want to capture. Wireshark’s capture documentation describes selecting an interface; the interface name and the traffic visible on it vary by system and network arrangement. A Pi connected to a network should not be assumed to see traffic merely because it is online.

If the intended capture is Wi-Fi traffic, monitor mode may be relevant, but it has important limits. Wireshark says monitor mode applies to IEEE 802.11 interfaces, is supported only on some operating systems, and may disconnect an adapter from its associated network. Adapter and operating-system support matter, so do not assume a built-in wireless interface or any USB Wi-Fi adapter can capture all nearby or networked Wi-Fi traffic. See Wireshark’s capture-options documentation.
Save captures to files you can inspect later
For a saved recording, configure the capture tool with the correct interface and an output filename. Wireshark documents pcapng and pcap capture formats; tcpdump also uses pcap. The capture guide explains how to set the interface and file destination, and notes that Wireshark can read packet data created by tcpdump and other capture programs. See Wireshark’s capture-file guide and capture-options guide.

- Verify the interface that will receive the traffic you intend to observe.
- Set the capture tool to listen on that interface and write to a clearly named capture file.
- Open the saved file in Wireshark when you are ready to inspect the captured packets.
The exact command, interface name, and file path depend on the installed operating system and capture setup; the available project details do not specify them. Avoid copying a command without first confirming that its interface and destination match your system.
Use a ring buffer for ongoing capture
A continuously running capture needs a retention policy. Wireshark’s ring-buffer mode writes a configured number of files and cycles through them; once the ring is full, it replaces the oldest file. That makes the retained set bounded, but it also means older packet data is overwritten rather than kept indefinitely. Configure the number of files and their size or duration according to your storage and retention needs, and account for the fact that a full ring discards its oldest recording. Details are in the dumpcap manual.

Treat packet captures as sensitive records
Packet captures can reveal information about devices and network activity, so they should be handled as sensitive data. Consider whose devices and communications may be recorded, who can access the files, how long the files are retained, and whether capture is appropriate under applicable local requirements. Rules differ by jurisdiction and circumstance; no universal legal conclusion follows from the technical capture documentation.
