I Built a Media Library for Flet Because Real Mobile Apps Need Native APIs

flet-media-library gives Flet apps a Python-facing service for native media-library operations, but Android and iOS support differs and permissions may be partial.

flet-media-library is an open-source Flet service extension that gives Python apps an interface to a device’s media library on Android and iOS. It bridges Python/Flet code to Flutter and native media components, so an app can query albums, save media, and handle permissions without implementing every platform integration itself. It is not a promise that Android and iOS support identical operations: the project author specifically identifies audio saving as Android-only and advises checking the service’s capabilities.

What the package is—and what it connects

Faizan Gondal describes flet-media-library as a Python-facing Service extension for Flet. The architecture described in the project article is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. A Python/Flet application calls the service API.
  2. The service passes work through a Flutter extension.
  3. photo_manager handles common media-library operations.
  4. Custom Android Kotlin code using MediaStore fills specific gaps.

The package defines its own models, so application code can use the service’s Python types rather than depending directly on backend package types. These implementation details are the project author’s description, not an independent code audit. Read the project author’s article.

Why filesystem access is not the whole answer

A file path and an item in a phone’s shared media library are not always interchangeable. A downloader may want a video to appear in the public Movies collection; a camera or editor may need to save a result to the gallery; and a gallery app may need to enumerate albums and assets. A recorder may need to save audio. The project author’s argument is that ordinary filesystem operations alone do not provide the same integration with media indexing, permission handling, or platform media identifiers.

This distinction matters especially for apps that need to work with user-owned media beyond their own private files. A service that wraps native APIs can centralize common integration work, but it does not remove platform differences or the need to design around permission states.

Permission handling must account for partial access

The project describes permission checks and requests for images, videos, and audio, with states including granted, limited, denied, denied forever, restricted, and unknown. That range is important: a permission result should not automatically be interpreted as access to every item in the library.

Android’s official guidance says, “Android 14 introduces Selected Photos Access, which allows users to grant apps access to specific images and videos in their library, rather than granting access to all media of a given type.” This applies when an app targets Android 14 (API level 34) or higher. Android recommends the photo picker for selection use cases; gallery apps that use storage permissions should account for selected-media permission and partial access. See Android’s Selected Photos Access guidance.

In practical terms, an app should distinguish permission to access selected media from permission to browse a broader library. The project’s stated permission states can help expose that distinction to application code, but the app still needs an appropriate user experience for requesting access and handling the result.

What operations the service describes

The project article lists the following features. Their availability and behavior should be checked on the target platform rather than assumed to be identical on Android and iOS.

  • Browse: query albums and assets, filter by media type, paginate and sort results, and filter by filename, date, size, duration, or MIME type where supported.
  • Load thumbnails: retrieve thumbnails as base64 data or use a cached path-based option. The author presents the path option as a way to avoid repeatedly transferring image data across the Python/Flutter boundary for large galleries; no independent performance benchmark is established.
  • Save media: save images and videos to the system media library. The article describes audio saving through custom Kotlin and MediaStore code on Android only.
  • Modify media: rename or move items where supported. Android storage rules may require system confirmation.
  • Observe and diagnose: receive change notifications, discover platform capabilities, and use typed exceptions for cases such as permission failures, unsupported operations, missing assets or albums, invalid input, and platform errors.

Capability discovery is particularly useful before exposing an operation in the UI. The project identifies move, rename, copy, limited access, thumbnail paths, and change notifications as areas where support can differ. Treat the capability response—not an assumption based on another platform—as the guide to which actions to offer.

Android and iOS are not interchangeable targets

The package’s purpose is to offer a common Python-facing interface, not to make the underlying operating systems identical. The project explicitly calls audio saving Android-only, and it describes other operations as capability-dependent. A Flet app should therefore decide what to do when an operation is unavailable: hide or disable the action, offer a different workflow, or explain the platform limitation.

Those entries are package documentation, not a substitute for confirming the current project setup instructions and the app’s actual access needs.

Install and register the service

The project article shows installation with either pip or uv, then registers the service with the Flet page:

pip install flet-media-library

Or:

uv add flet-media-library

Register it in the app:

page.services.append(MediaLibrary())

The article’s dependency example uses flet>=1.0.0 and flet-media-library>=1.1.2. The Python Package Index listed flet-media-library version 1.1.2, uploaded September 22, 2026, when checked on October 7, 2026; that is a dated registry state, not a guarantee that this remains the latest version. Check the PyPI project page for its current release information. Before building, consult the package’s current instructions for dependencies and platform requirements.

What the demo and testing claims establish

Gondal’s article says the repository includes a demo covering gallery browsing, albums, thumbnails, video and audio playback, camera capture, video recording, microphone recording, file operations, live updates, and a real-device smoke-testing sequence. That is an author-reported description of the project; it does not establish that a particular phone, OS version, or workflow has been independently tested here.

For a production app, validate the operations the app actually uses on its supported device and OS range. In particular, test permission denial and partial access, saving to shared media, behavior when a capability is absent, and any mutation that may trigger system confirmation.

How to judge whether it fits your app

flet-media-library is most relevant when a Flet app needs to work with the system media library rather than only manage app-private files. Before adopting it, compare its documented and observed behavior with the app’s requirements:

  • Which operations are supported on Android and on iOS?
  • Can the app handle denial, limited access, and later permission changes?
  • Does the workflow need media inserted into the shared system library, or is app-private storage sufficient?
  • Do query and thumbnail approaches suit the app’s actual gallery size and rendering needs?
  • Can the app handle unsupported mutations and required user confirmation?
  • Have the relevant integrations been exercised on the devices and OS versions the app will support?

The project provides a reusable bridge to native media functionality, while the app remains responsible for fitting that functionality to its own permissions, platform support, and user workflows.
