A menu bar monitor can make Codex and Claude usage easier to check without opening a terminal, dashboard, or browser tab. The key design choice is what “usage” means: a live view of provider quota, a record of local coding-session activity, or both. Those figures come from different sources and should not be treated as interchangeable.
This account’s title describes a macOS utility for checking Codex and Claude usage, but no public source identifies the app or verifies its features. The distinctions below explain the product decisions such an app has to make, without attributing comparable apps’ capabilities or privacy claims to it.

Why put Codex and Claude usage in the menu bar?
Claude Code runs in the terminal and works alongside existing IDEs and development tools, according to Anthropic’s Claude Code product page. Codex workflows can likewise involve a CLI or other tools, while subscription allowance may be shown elsewhere. A small menu bar readout offers a different convenience: check a quota window or reset time at a glance rather than interrupting work to find the relevant screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat convenience is useful only if the app explains what its numbers represent. A quota percentage, a local count of tokens in session history, and a dollar estimate based on API pricing answer different questions. A clear interface should identify the metric, its time window, when it was last refreshed, and whether it describes a subscription allowance or an estimate.

“Usage” can mean a quota, local activity, or estimated cost
Provider quota and reset timing
Some menu bar utilities display utilization over provider-defined windows. For example, TokenUsageMonitor advertises Claude five-hour and seven-day windows and Codex weekly limits. UsageBar describes five-hour and weekly windows for Claude and Codex, along with utilization bars and reset timers. These are claims about those products, not verified features of the app in this article’s title. TokenUsageMonitor’s App Store listing and UsageBar’s project page describe their respective displays.
A quota view helps answer, “How much of this allowance remains, and when does it reset?” It does not necessarily show every request or token used, nor does a percentage alone explain the provider’s accounting rules. The window label and reset time matter as much as the gauge.

Local session history
A local history view answers a different question: what activity can be reconstructed from files or records on this Mac? Quota Monitor documents local Codex session history and Claude Code project-history indexing, storing session history and usage events in a local SQLite database. A locally indexed record can help with trends or project-level review, but it should not be mistaken for the provider’s current quota balance. Quota Monitor’s repository documentation describes this approach.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →API-equivalent cost estimates
Some tools translate token counts into an estimated cost using model pricing. Quota Monitor explicitly describes its API-equivalent cost figures as estimates, not provider invoices or subscription charges. Claude Code’s billing context also depends on account type: Anthropic says that when used with a Claude Console account, Claude Code consumes API tokens at standard API pricing. A cost estimate therefore needs a clear label and should not be presented as a bill or as the price of a subscription plan. Anthropic’s Claude Code page and Quota Monitor’s documentation distinguish these contexts.

Where a monitor gets its data
The source determines what the app can show, what credentials it needs, and how fresh or dependable a reading may be. A monitor may combine methods rather than use one source for everything.
- Local CLI credentials or records: UsageBar says it reads locally available CLI credentials for Codex and Gemini, and handles Claude OAuth credentials or a Claude CLI Keychain entry. Quota Monitor documents live Codex quota reads through
codex app-serveras well as local Codex session history, plus Anthropic OAuth quota reads and local Claude Code history. Local files can support history without sending that history to a separate analytics service, but live quota refreshes may still require provider network requests. UsageBar; Quota Monitor. - Provider quota endpoints: A direct request can provide current quota information, but not every endpoint is a published, stable interface. UsageBar says its ChatGPT/Codex and Gemini quota endpoints are unofficial or private and have no published service-level agreement; server errors, authentication failures, or schema changes can interrupt readings. UsageBar’s documentation.
- Signed-in browser session: UsageBar offers an optional browser extension that reads usage from the user’s signed-in Claude or ChatGPT session. Its documentation says preferring this source avoids its rate-limited API endpoint, but pauses some CLI-derived trends and notifications. That trade-off is specific to UsageBar and does not establish how another app works. UsageBar’s project documentation.
A useful monitor should make stale or failed reads visible. If the underlying request fails, retaining an old percentage without a timestamp can make outdated information look current. UsageBar documents handling authentication errors, server errors, and schema drift as transient failures; that is a product-specific implementation, not a guarantee that every app recovers in the same way. Privacy claims depend on the app’s actual data flow
“Local” can describe where history is stored without meaning the app makes no network calls. Quota Monitor says its session history and usage events stay in a local SQLite database, while live refreshes contact provider services. It also documents a daily anonymous installation check-in containing six fields for eligible Developer ID builds. Its repository documentation spells out those separate behaviors.

Other products make different claims. TokenUsageMonitor’s listing says data stays on the Mac and that it uses no analytics. AgentPeek says its desktop app does not upload transcripts, diffs, prompts, or usage numbers during ordinary monitoring. These are vendor statements about those products, not evidence about the app described here. TokenUsageMonitor’s listing; AgentPeek’s product page.

For any monitor, check separately whether credentials are stored locally, what provider requests occur during refresh, whether local histories leave the device, and whether diagnostics or installation checks are sent. Avoid treating a broad privacy phrase as a substitute for a description of those data flows.
Security and reliability are part of the interface
Credential access can trigger macOS prompts, and distribution choices affect how those prompts behave. UsageBar says it is ad-hoc signed, not Developer ID signed or notarized, and warns that Keychain access prompts may recur. Quota Monitor, by contrast, documents release-integrity and signing checks for its installers. Those disclosures illustrate product-specific trade-offs; they do not establish the signing or distribution status of the titled app. UsageBar documentation; Quota Monitor repository documentation.
Unofficial endpoints introduce a separate reliability concern from app signing: a provider can change a private response format or reject requests without the monitor having a published service guarantee to rely on. In practice, readers should be able to distinguish an updated reading from a cached one and understand that a monitor’s display may be temporarily unavailable even when the underlying account still works.

For a Codex-and-Claude menu bar app, the core decisions are about scope and honesty, not merely where to draw a gauge.
- Define the promise: Say whether the app shows provider quota, local coding-session history, estimated API-equivalent cost, or a combination.
- Make provenance legible: Label the source, time window, last successful refresh, and any estimate in the UI so a number cannot be mistaken for another metric.
- Choose a retrieval method per provider: Local CLI files, OAuth credentials, app-server access, provider endpoints, and browser sessions carry different dependencies and failure modes.
- Handle failure without false confidence: Show when data is stale, credentials are unavailable, or a request fails rather than silently presenting an old value as live.
- Describe data practices precisely: Separate local storage from provider calls and any telemetry or installation checks.
- Explain installation and credential prompts: Signing, notarization, release integrity, and update path affect what users encounter when installing and granting access.
Those are design questions for this category, not verified statements about the particular app named in the title. Its name, release status, supported macOS versions, price, data sources, privacy behavior, and distribution are not established by the available public references.
