To make a browser-encoded JPEG larger, raise the JPEG quality setting first, then measure the result in bytes. If maximum quality is still below your target, increasing the canvas dimensions may add data—but changes the image and still cannot guarantee an exact file size. The browser’s canvas API lets you request an encoding quality; it does not let you specify an exact number of bytes.
First, convert the requested KB into an exact byte target
“KB” can mean either 1,000 bytes (decimal kilobytes) or 1,024 bytes (often called a kibibyte, or KiB). Confirm which convention the destination site or form uses before encoding. For example, 100 decimal KB is 100,000 bytes; 100 KiB is 102,400 bytes. Compare the output’s byte count with that integer—not a rounded KB value shown in a file picker.

Use the browser’s JPEG encoder and measure its output
Draw the image onto a canvas at the dimensions you intend to keep, then call canvas.toBlob() with the MIME type image/jpeg and a quality value from 0 to 1. The value controls lossy image quality, not output length. The WHATWG HTML Standard: Canvas describes the format argument, while MDN’s toBlob() reference documents the quality parameter and Blob result.

canvas.toBlob((blob) => {
if (!blob) throw new Error("JPEG encoding failed");
if (blob.type !== "image/jpeg") {
throw new Error(`Expected JPEG, got ${blob.type || "unknown type"}`);
}
const targetBytes = 100 * 1000; // Example: 100 decimal KB
console.log({ bytes: blob.size, exactMatch: blob.size === targetBytes });
}, "image/jpeg", 1.0);
This example checks whether the measured output matches 100,000 bytes; it does not imply that quality 1.0 will produce that size. Different images and browser encoders can produce different byte counts, so inspect each returned Blob’s size.

When the JPEG is too small, increase size in this order
- Keep the intended pixel dimensions and raise quality. If the current result is below target, try a higher quality setting, up to 1.0, and encode again. This is the first sensible adjustment when the output needs to grow without changing its dimensions.
- If maximum quality is still too small, consider larger dimensions. Increase the canvas width and height only if changing the image’s pixel dimensions is acceptable. Draw and encode again, then measure the new Blob. Upscaling can change how the image renders and is not a reliable way to land on a particular byte count.
- Report the measured result honestly. If no candidate equals the target in bytes, the target has not been reached. Give the nearest measured size or use another workflow that can meet the receiving system’s requirements; do not call a rounded display value an exact match.
Neither quality nor dimensions comes with a standards-backed guarantee that a requested byte count is attainable. Treat an exact match as a result you have measured for that particular output, not as something implied by a quality setting.
Check format, encoding failures, and image permissions
- Verify the MIME type. If the browser does not support the requested format, the canvas serialization standard allows it to fall back to PNG. Check that
blob.typeisimage/jpegbefore presenting the file as a JPEG. - Handle a missing Blob. The callback can receive
nullif an image cannot be created; do not attempt to readsizeuntil you have checked the result. - Check cross-origin access. A page needs permission to use a cross-origin image in a canvas. Otherwise, the canvas may not be origin-clean and serialization can fail with a
SecurityError. The exact fix depends on the image host’s permissions.
Use a Blob for preview or download
For larger image data, prefer toBlob() over toDataURL(). toDataURL() puts the encoded image into an in-memory string, which can have performance implications or run into URL-length limits; see MDN’s toDataURL() reference. To make a Blob available as a preview or download, create an object URL with URL.createObjectURL(blob) and revoke it with URL.revokeObjectURL(url) when it is no longer needed.

Why adding arbitrary bytes is not a safe shortcut
Appending padding to force a file’s byte count is not a dependable general solution. A validator might count those bytes while an image decoder or downstream service rejects, strips, or mishandles them. The canvas API provides a measured encoded image, not a documented safe padding method for producing a valid JPEG at an exact length.
