What’s actually slowing this PC down?

When I need to return to an earlier exchange in a long ChatGPT conversation, finding the right turn can mean a lot of scrolling and visual scanning. That retrieval friction is why I built a Chrome extension focused on navigating chats—not on changing how ChatGPT generates answers.
Why long conversations are hard to revisit
A chat can work well as a place to think through a problem, but it is less convenient as an archive. The answer I need may be several screens above the current point, and a vague memory of what I asked is not always enough to find it quickly. The challenge is not necessarily finding the conversation; it is locating a particular exchange inside it.

That distinction shaped the project: I wanted a way to orient myself within an open thread and get back to a useful turn, rather than another way to organize or generate responses.
What the extension is meant to do
The extension’s purpose is in-thread navigation. Its value depends on the interaction it actually provides: for example, whether it presents a map of turns, lets someone search within a thread, or offers controls to jump back to a selected result. Those are design patterns used by other extensions, not evidence of features in this one. The specific interface and supported controls should be described only to the extent they are implemented and verified.
#1 Best Overall
The same is true of coverage. Some tools work with messages already loaded in the page, while others advertise access to or search across a complete conversation. That difference matters: a search that can inspect only loaded content may miss an older turn that has not been rendered. A claim of full-thread access is a developer’s product claim, not a guarantee that every conversation will be found in every situation.
How this differs from ChatGPT’s own search
ChatGPT’s sidebar search is designed to find and reopen conversations in an account. OpenAI says signed-in users can search words or phrases on web, iOS, and Android; available results, connected sources, and filters can vary by account, workspace, and device. Archived chats may appear in results, but deleted chats cannot be recovered through search. OpenAI’s help article explains how chat-history search works.
That is account-level discovery. An in-thread navigation extension addresses a different task: locating a turn after a conversation is already open. One can complement the other, but an extension should not be presented as a replacement for account search unless it actually provides that functionality.
Other navigation patterns—and what to compare
Current extensions illustrate several approaches. LightSession for ChatGPT describes full-conversation search, an outline, a reader, and Markdown export. Its listing says version 1.1.5 was updated September 27, 2026. ChatGPT Long Conversation Toolkit describes search of content already loaded into the page, jump controls, bookmarks, and temporarily hiding or trimming older exchanges; its listing says version 1.4.1 was updated June 17, 2026. ChatGPT Conversation Navigator describes search, bookmarks, highlights, export, and local processing; its listing says version 1.2.0 was updated October 1, 2026. LunaTOC’s public README describes a searchable, clickable outline generated from prompts.
These descriptions help identify useful questions, but they are not independent tests of reliability, speed, or security. When choosing a tool, check:
- Whether it searches the entire thread or only messages currently loaded in the page.
- Whether its map covers user prompts, assistant replies, or both.
- Whether it offers bookmarks, highlights, or export—and whether those are relevant to your workflow.
- Which ChatGPT pages it supports and whether keyboard operation and accessibility are addressed.
- What conversation content and permissions it uses, where any index or bookmarks are stored, and when the extension was last updated.
Privacy and practical limits
Extensions that inspect a conversation can handle personal communications and website content. Some developers say that indexing or navigation data stays on the device and conversations are not uploaded. Those are product disclosures, not independent security audits. Before installing an extension, review its current permissions and privacy disclosures, and consider whether its access is appropriate for the conversations you use.
Rank #4
A navigation tool should also be understood by its scope. Helping locate turns does not, by itself, mean an extension changes ChatGPT’s answers, restores deleted chats, or searches every conversation in an account. Those are separate capabilities and should not be inferred from a navigator’s interface.

This kind of extension is most useful to people who keep substantial work in a few long conversations and often need to revisit a prompt or answer. If the main problem is locating which chat contains a topic, ChatGPT’s sidebar search is the more direct starting point. If the chat is already open and the problem is finding a particular turn, a navigator can provide a more focused route—provided its search coverage and controls match the thread.
