I Automated Repetitive Linux Desktop Tasks With Four Bash Scripts—Here’s What They Can and Can’t Do

Bash can coordinate repeatable Linux tasks, while xdotool and wmctrl can request graphical actions in compatible sessions. Four practical patterns show what to test—and why time savings depend on your own workflow.

Bash can make repetitive Linux tasks repeatable, but it does not control every graphical desktop by itself. The four-script story in this headline is the author’s account, not an independently verified test: no scripts, test log, or time study are available here. Whether window actions work on your machine depends on the display server, window manager, applications, and installed tools.

What Bash desktop automation can—and cannot—do

A Bash script runs shell commands in sequence. It can handle command-line work directly, then call other utilities when a task involves windows or simulated keyboard input. The script’s shebang identifies the interpreter—for example, #!/usr/bin/env bash asks the environment to locate Bash.

That distinction matters. A command that renames files or starts an application is different from one that clicks, types, or rearranges windows. The latter depends on graphical-session support and may fail if an application ignores synthetic input or the window manager handles requests differently.

David Both’s A Sysadmin’s Guide to Bash Scripting focuses on tasks performed through terminal commands; its automation advice should not be read as proof that every GUI action is automatable.

Why session details decide whether the scripts work

xdotool documents X11-oriented commands for searching for windows, moving or resizing them, raising them, and generating input. Its manual cautions that some applications may ignore events sent directly to a particular window. The Debian trixie xdotool manual is therefore a useful reference for X11 workflows, not a guarantee for every Linux display system.

wmctrl sends requests to a compatible window manager: for example, to activate a window, move it to another desktop, resize it, or request that it close. These actions depend on the window manager and its desktop configuration. Its documentation notes that virtual-desktop operations require multiple desktops and that tray-minimized windows can behave differently. See freedesktop.org’s wmctrl page.

Before adapting any example, record your distribution, desktop environment, window manager, and display session (such as X11 or Wayland). Also name the applications you have actually tried. The reader question “Will my xdotool and wmctrl scripts run under Linux Mint?” does not establish compatibility: Mint installations can differ in desktop and display-session configuration, and no specific Mint setup or application test is established here.

Four script patterns for common desktop chores

The examples below are safe starting patterns, not the author’s unavailable original scripts. They show how four common chores could be organized. Install the relevant utilities through your distribution’s package manager, confirm their names and behavior locally, and run them first in a test account or virtual machine. The Bash guide above advises using a non-root user and a test system or VM.

1. Launch a routine workspace

Job: Start a small set of applications. This is the simplest pattern because Bash launches programs rather than trying to control their interfaces.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

firefox &
libreoffice --writer &

Dependencies and use: Bash and the named applications must be installed and available in the session’s command path. Save as start-workspace.sh, inspect the commands, then run chmod u+x start-workspace.sh and ./start-workspace.sh.

Expected result and safety: The applications start if their commands are valid. To inspect before running, use cat start-workspace.sh; to stop an application, close it normally. Avoid running a script you do not understand with elevated privileges.

2. Arrange a known window

Job: Request a window resize and move using a stable application selector rather than a screen coordinate. Replace the example class with one confirmed on your own system; window classes and matching behavior can vary.

  • Broad Compatibility: Designed for use with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and later, Android 7 or later, and Chrome OS
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

window_id=$(xdotool search --onlyvisible --class firefox | head -n 1)
if [ -z "$window_id" ]; then
  printf '%sn' "Firefox window not found" >&2
  exit 1
fi
wmctrl -ir "$window_id" -e 0,40,40,1200,800

Dependencies and use: This pattern requires Bash, xdotool, wmctrl, a compatible X11 session, and a matching visible window. Confirm the window ID and class before using it; then run the script from a terminal.

Expected result and safety: The window manager is asked to place the selected window at the requested position and size; it may refuse or interpret the request differently. xdotool search can return multiple matches, and result ordering can vary. Check the selected ID and wait for the intended window to appear rather than assuming the first match is always correct. To stop, press Ctrl+C while the script is running; to undo a completed move, reposition the window manually.

3. Focus an application and enter a destination

Job: Bring a browser forward and enter a URL in its address bar. This combines a window-manager request with synthetic keyboard input, so it is more fragile than launching a command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

url=${1:?Usage: open-url.sh URL}
window_id=$(xdotool search --onlyvisible --class firefox | head -n 1)

  printf '%sn' "Firefox window not found" >&2
  exit 1
fi
wmctrl -ia "$window_id"
sleep 1
xdotool key --clearmodifiers ctrl+l
xdotool type --clearmodifiers -- "$url"

Dependencies and use: Requires Bash, wmctrl, xdotool, Firefox, and a compatible X11 session. Save as open-url.sh, make executable, then invoke it with an explicit URL, such as ./open-url.sh https://example.org. Review the URL before running.

Easy to install with plug and play technology | No additional software required.Except for Windows systems, other system hotkeys may not work and are only used for typing

Expected result and safety: If the intended browser window receives focus and accepts synthetic events, the script types the supplied URL into the address bar; it does not submit it. The one-second delay is a practical buffer, not a reliability guarantee. Linux Bash’s illustrative desktop automation example likewise uses wmctrl and xdotool, and recommends deterministic selectors, small waits, dry-run behavior, and allow-lists where commands may be executed. Stop a running script with Ctrl+C; inspect the destination before pressing Enter.

4. Request a graceful close of a selected window

Job: Send a close request to one identified window rather than force-killing an application process.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -eu

window_id=$(xdotool search --onlyvisible --class firefox | head -n 1)
if [ -z "$window_id" ]; then
  printf '%sn' "Firefox window not found" >&2
  exit 1
fi
wmctrl -ic "$window_id"

Dependencies and use: Requires the same X11-oriented window tools and a verified selector. Run it only after checking which window the selector matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expected result and safety: The window manager sends a close request; the application may prompt to save work or may not respond. It is not a guarantee that unsaved data is preserved. Use normal application controls if the wrong window is selected, and do not automate closing multiple matches until you have explicitly reviewed the target list.

Make scripts safer to run and easier to recover

  • Start with read-only inspection or a dry run where possible. Print the matched window ID and intended action before making changes.
  • Use a specific application class or other verified selector instead of titles that change or coordinates that assume a fixed screen layout.
  • Check for missing windows and ambiguous matches; do not rely on search-result order or current focus without verification.
  • Keep scripts narrowly scoped. If a script can execute commands or act on user-provided input, validate that input and use an allow-list rather than passing arbitrary text to a shell.
  • Use set -e or explicit checks thoughtfully. The xdotool manual notes, “A script will fail when any command fails.” That makes error handling important: a failed search should not be followed by an action on an empty or unintended target.
  • Keep a terminal open while testing so you can see errors, and use Ctrl+C to interrupt a script that is still running. For completed window changes, recover through the application or desktop controls.

How to measure whether the automation saves time

No independently attributable figure establishes how many hours this four-script workflow saves each week. Treat “hours every week” as the author’s personal estimate unless the author provides a measurement.

A useful personal calculation is to track the recurring tasks before and after automation over the same representative period. Record each task’s frequency and hands-on time, include time spent fixing failed runs and maintaining scripts, then compare totals:

net time saved = time spent on tasks before
               - (time spent running tasks after
                  + time spent on failures and maintenance)

State the observation period, which tasks were counted, how often they occurred, and whether setup time was included. That makes a personal result interpretable without presenting it as a universal benchmark.
