You don’t need to guess from the volume knob: “full volume” is not a particular sound level. What matters for your hearing is the sound reaching your ears, how long you listen, and how often you get that exposure. If you’re unsure how loud it is, check the level where you’re listening, turn it down if it’s very loud, and take breaks.
Is it bad to play a portable speaker at full volume?
Not automatically—but the knob position cannot tell you whether the sound is safe. The speaker’s model, your distance from it, whether you are indoors or outdoors, the music, and the length of time you listen all affect the sound at your ears. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that sound level, listening duration, and frequency of exposure all affect hearing risk.

The WHO and International Telecommunication Union’s 2019 safe-listening device standard gives reference allowances of 80 dB for 40 hours per week for adults and 75 dB for 40 hours per week for children. These are exposure references, not settings on a speaker, and they should not be treated as a guarantee for every listener or situation. As sound intensity increases, the time considered permissible decreases.

The WHO’s 2022 recommendation of 100 dB(A) averaged over 15 minutes is guidance for venues and events. It is not a personal safe-volume setting for a portable speaker at home.
How can you check the sound where you are?
WHO guidance says people can use apps to check and monitor sound levels in their environment or on a music device. You can also use a sound-level meter as an optional way to check near your listening position. Take the reading where you are, rather than beside the speaker: the level at the speaker does not tell you exactly what reaches your ears.

- Lower the volume rather than relying on a particular knob position as a safety threshold.
- Move farther from the speaker, or shorten the listening session; both change your exposure at the listening position.
- Take breaks, especially during longer sessions, and avoid repeatedly returning to very loud listening.
- If children are listening, use the WHO’s lower child exposure reference when thinking about listening time and level.
The JBL PartyBox 100 owner’s manual warns, “To prevent possible hearing damage, do not listen to high volume levels for long periods.” That is advice for that specific model, not evidence that your speaker is a PartyBox 100. Its practical point is consistent with the broader guidance: avoid prolonged high-volume listening.
