Hypixel Studios says, “The User Data button always opens the correct folder.” From that directory, copy the complete world or save folder to another location after you have exited the world.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The documented release locations are %APPDATA%HytaleUserData on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData on macOS, and $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData or ~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData on Linux. A newer multiplayer support article refers to single-player worlds under %appdata%Hytalesaves, so use the launcher first rather than trusting an old copied path. Dedicated servers use a different backup target: the complete universe/ directory.

These paths describe the release patchline documented by Hypixel Studios. They are useful when you need to script a copy or verify what the launcher opened, but the launcher’s directory button takes priority because a custom installation or another patchline can use a different location.
| Platform | Release-path location | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | %APPDATA%HytaleUserData |
Paste the path into File Explorer or open it through the Hytale Launcher. |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData |
Use the launcher, or open Finder’s Go to Folder command and enter the path. |
| Linux | $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData or ~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData |
Use the launcher first; if you navigate manually, check the active XDG data directory. |
The word release matters. Hytale Update 5 separated non-release patchlines from release data. A pre-release installation can therefore have its own directory even when the release world is present on the same computer.

The reliable method: open User Data from the launcher
Do this before searching your disk. It avoids mistakes caused by old forum posts, videos, custom install locations, and patchline migrations.
- Start the Hytale Launcher for the installation that owns the world.
- Open Settings.
- Click Open Directory….
- Select User Data.
- In the directory that opens, identify the relevant save or world folder before copying anything.
Hypixel Studios’ official support wording is unambiguous: “The User Data button always opens the correct folder.” The statement appears in its How to Find Your Hytale Logs support article. It is more dependable than a path copied from a guide written for a different build.

If the launcher opens a directory that does not resemble the path above, do not move files into the documented location just to make the layout match. The launcher is showing the active installation’s data root; use that root for the backup.
Why a pre-release world may not be beside your release world
Hytale Update 5 changed storage for non-release patchlines. The release patchline continues to use %HYTALE%/UserData/. Non-release patchlines use separate directories beneath %HYTALE%/data/, such as %HYTALE%/data/pre-release/.
During migration, existing non-release worlds, mods, and settings are duplicated. Afterward, patchlines no longer share data. As a result, a pre-release world can appear to have vanished when you are looking in the release directory, even though it remains in its patchline-specific data directory.

- Back up the folder from the directory it opens, rather than combining release and pre-release folders.
This separation also prevents an accidental restore from one patchline into another. Keep the patchline identity with your backup folder name, for example Hytale-release-backup-2026-10-15 or Hytale-pre-release-backup-2026-10-15.

Finding a single-player world
Hytale’s newer multiplayer support article tells players moving a single-player world to find it in %appdata%Hytalesaves and send the world folder. That guidance describes a particular game context and article generation, while the release support documentation describes the broader UserData directory. The two references should not be treated as a contradiction: UserData is the directory you should open first, and the save folder may be inside it.
When you are moving one world to another computer
- On the source computer, open the active User Data directory from the launcher.
- Locate the single-player world folder. In layouts using the newer save naming, it may be under a
savesfolder. - Exit the world before copying it.
- Copy the entire world folder, preserving its internal files and subdirectories.
- Transfer the copy to the destination computer and place it in the corresponding save location opened by the destination launcher.
Do not copy only a file that looks like a world name. The complete folder is the transferable unit described by the support guidance. Keep the original untouched until the destination has opened the copied world successfully.
Dedicated-server saves: back up universe/
A dedicated server does not use the client-only procedure as its primary backup target. The Hytale server manual defines universe/ as the location for world and player save data. Playable worlds are beneath universe/worlds/, where each world has its own files and configuration.
| Server item | What it represents | Backup scope |
|---|---|---|
universe/ |
World and player save data | Copy the complete directory. |
universe/worlds/ |
Playable worlds and per-world configuration | Included automatically when the complete universe is copied. |
| Server directory beside the universe | Server-level configuration, logs, mods, and permissions | Preserve these too when rebuilding a modded or configured server. |
Copying only one folder under universe/worlds/ can omit player data and other save-wide information. For a server migration or disaster recovery, stop the server cleanly and copy universe/ as one unit. If you need to reproduce the whole installation, archive the server-level configuration, mods, and permissions alongside it.

How to make a safe client-world backup
A backup is a separate, dated copy made while Hytale is no longer writing the world. A second copy on the same disk protects against an accidental deletion, but it does not protect against a failed disk or an operating-system reinstall; use another physical device for that.
- Leave the world normally. Return to the launcher or otherwise confirm that the single-player session is closed. Do not copy a world while chunks or player changes are still being written.
- Open the active data root. In the launcher, choose Settings → Open Directory… → User Data.
- Identify the complete save folder. If your layout includes
saves, select the folder for the world you want. Do not alter the source. - Create a dated destination. Copy the folder to a separate location and give the copy an unambiguous name such as
Hytale-backup-2026-10-15. - Use off-device storage for important worlds. An external drive is a practical destination because it remains available if the original installation is removed. Hytale does not require a particular drive type or capacity for this process.
- Keep multiple dated copies. Retain several known-good versions instead of replacing one backup every time. A damaged or incomplete copy should never be your only recovery point.
- Test a restore. Before deleting the original or reinstalling the game, restore a copy into a duplicate location and verify that Hytale can open it.
Keep the patchline in the backup name when you use release and non-release builds. That small label prevents a release save from being confused with a pre-release copy after a migration.
How to back up a dedicated server automatically
Hytale’s self-hosted server supports native backup controls. These are useful when a server is online regularly and a manual copy would be easy to forget.
| Option | Purpose | Documented form |
|---|---|---|
--backup |
Enables server backup handling. | Use with the server startup command. |
--backup-dir <Path> |
Chooses where generated backups are written. | Point it to a dedicated backup directory. |
--backup-frequency <Integer> |
Sets the interval between backups. | The wrapper example documents a 30-minute frequency and a backups directory. |
The documented wrapper example uses a 30-minute frequency; that is an example setting, not a promise that every installation has the same schedule. Configure a destination that is separate from the live universe/ directory, then periodically copy selected backup sets to another device. Automation reduces missed backups but does not replace restore testing.

Clean shutdown still matters
Stop the dedicated server cleanly before making a manual archive of universe/. Automated server backups handle scheduled copies, but an external archive made during active writes can capture an inconsistent state. For a planned migration, stop the process, wait for it to finish, copy the data, and start it again only after the copy completes.

Restoring or moving a world without losing the original
- Close Hytale on the destination computer, or stop the destination dedicated server.
- Make a safety copy of the destination’s current save directory before replacing anything.
- Place the client world folder in the destination launcher’s corresponding save location, or place the server’s complete
universe/directory in the server data directory. - Preserve the directory hierarchy. A duplicated nesting level, such as
saves/world/world, can prevent the game from recognizing the save. - Start the game or server and check the world and player data.
- Only remove old data after the restored copy has been opened and verified.
For a server restoration, remember that the world itself is only part of the operational state. Server-level configuration, mods, permissions, and logs may sit beside universe/; preserve the relevant files when recreating a configured server.
Why you cannot find the Hytale save folder
You searched a path from an old guide
Use the launcher’s User Data button instead. Official support warns that custom Windows installs and other patchlines can use different paths. A path copied from a video may describe an earlier layout or a different installation root.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou are checking the release folder for a non-release world
Update 5 stores non-release data under patchline-specific directories such as %HYTALE%/data/pre-release/. Open the launcher for that patchline and repeat the directory procedure.
You are looking for a client save while working on a dedicated server
Server worlds and player data are in the server’s universe/ directory, with playable worlds under universe/worlds/. They will not necessarily appear in the client’s User Data hierarchy.
You copied only a visible world name
The transferable object is the complete world folder. Reopen the source directory and copy the folder with all of its contents, not a screenshot, shortcut, or single configuration file.

You are on macOS or Linux and assumed Windows conventions
macOS uses ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData. Linux uses $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData or ~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData. The launcher avoids having to guess which environment variable or hidden directory is active.
You expected logs to be world backups
Hypixel Studios says the client retains only the ten newest client log files. That retention rule concerns logs, not save backups. A log folder is therefore not a substitute for a copied world or universe/ directory.
Choosing the right backup scope
| Situation | Copy this | Important precaution |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player release installation | The complete world/save folder inside the launcher-opened UserData directory. |
Exit the world first and retain a dated copy. |
| Single-player non-release patchline | The world folder in that patchline’s own data directory. | Do not mix it with release data; label the patchline. |
| Moving one world to another computer | The complete single-player world folder. | Place it in the destination launcher’s corresponding save location. |
| Dedicated server | The complete universe/ directory. |
Stop the server cleanly; include server configuration and mods when rebuilding. |
| Automated server protection | Native backups generated from the server’s backup options. | Set --backup-dir apart from the live data and test a restore. |
A practical backup routine
For a world you play occasionally, make a dated manual copy whenever you finish a significant build or before changing installations. Keep the live folder and at least one separate copy, then move an additional copy to an external drive when the world matters.
For a dedicated server, enable the native backup options, keep the generated files outside the live directory, and periodically archive a complete universe/ copy. Preserve several dates so you can recover from corruption that is discovered after an automated backup has already replaced an older one.
Before a reinstall, patchline switch, or PC move, perform one final clean shutdown and make a fresh copy. Test that copy in a duplicate destination before deleting the original installation. This sequence protects both the world and the player data that may not be obvious from a world-name folder.
Bottom line
Open the Hytale Launcher and use Settings → Open Directory… → User Data; it is the authoritative way to find the active installation’s save directory. Copy the complete client world folder after closing the game. For a dedicated server, stop it and copy the complete universe/ directory, then use --backup, --backup-dir, and --backup-frequency for scheduled protection. Keep dated copies on separate storage and verify a restore before removing the original.
