To grant operator status, an authorized administrator runs op PlayerName in the server console, replacing PlayerName with the player’s exact Minecraft name. In chat, an already-authorized sender can use /op PlayerName. A normal player cannot legitimately self-OP on somebody else’s server; the owner or an existing administrator must do it.

What OP means in Minecraft
OP is short for operator. It is an administrative permission that allows a player to use privileged server commands. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference describes /op as “Grants operator status to a player,” while Minecraft’s command guide defines /op <playername> as making a player an operator of a server.

OP is not a cosmetic setting and it is not something an ordinary player can turn on from a normal account. The command must come from the server console or from an in-game sender that already has enough permission to run administrative commands.
The fastest method: use the server console
- Confirm authority. Make sure you own the server or have administrator access. If the server belongs to someone else, ask its owner or staff member to grant OP.
- Open the console. Use the console supplied by the dedicated-server software or hosting control panel. The console is the authoritative administration interface for the server.
- Enter the command. Type
op PlayerName, replacingPlayerNamewith the player’s exact Minecraft account name. - Submit it. Press Enter. The server should report that the player has been made an operator, and that player can then use commands allowed to operators.
Do not include explanatory brackets in the command. For example, enter op Alex, not op <PlayerName>. The name must match the account name recognized by the server.

Using OP from in-game chat
If you are already an authorized administrator, you can run the command in chat as /op PlayerName. The leading slash identifies it as a chat command. The sender still needs sufficient permission; adding the slash does not bypass the server’s permission checks.
If the command is rejected in chat, run it from the server console instead, or ask an administrator who already has the required permission. A player without administrative authority cannot use chat to promote their own account.

Dedicated Java server
For a Java Edition dedicated server, the normal workflow is to issue the OP command from the server console. Enter op PlayerName and press Enter. The player must use the exact name known to the server. Minecraft’s official command documentation lists the equivalent in-game form as /op <playername>.
The Java server setup documentation covers installing and running the dedicated server; OP itself is granted after the server is running and you can reach its console. If you administer the server through a hosting panel, the panel’s console is the place to enter the command.
Java single-player or LAN worlds
Java does not use a separate dedicated-server console for a normal single-player world. Open the world’s options and enable Allow Commands. In a LAN session, the host controls whether commands are allowed. Once commands are enabled, the host can use the appropriate in-game command, including /op PlayerName where the world and permission system support it.

Because the host controls a single-player or LAN world, another participant cannot independently make themselves an operator. Ask the host to enable commands and perform the promotion.
Bedrock Edition procedure
Bedrock Dedicated Server
Microsoft documents op <player: target> for Bedrock, with the permission level listed as Admin and Requires Cheats? No. In a Bedrock Dedicated Server console, enter:
op PlayerName
This grants operator status to the named player. The Bedrock Dedicated Server console also supports the corresponding removal command:
deop PlayerName
Use the same exact player name when revoking the privilege. The command affects that individual player; it does not change the default permission for future joiners.
Bedrock worlds hosted in the game
For a Bedrock world created or hosted through the game, open the world’s Game settings and enable Allow Cheats before using administrative commands. Bedrock permanently disables achievements in that world when cheats are enabled, even if you later turn cheats off. Consider that consequence before changing the setting on an achievement-focused world.

A player joining somebody else’s Bedrock world cannot enable cheats for the host’s world. The owner or host must change the setting and run the command.
Java and Bedrock: which method should you use?
| Situation | Where to run the command | Command or setting | Required authority | Achievement effect | Who is affected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Java dedicated server | Server console | op PlayerName |
Console access or existing administrative permission | Not stated for this console workflow | One named player |
| Java chat | In-game chat | /op PlayerName |
The sender must already have enough permission | Not stated | One named player |
| Java single-player or LAN | World Options, then in-game command | Enable Allow Commands | Host controls the world | Not stated | The hosted world and its authorized players |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | Server console | op PlayerName |
Console access or existing administrative permission | The command reference says cheats are not required | One named player |
| Bedrock in-game world | Game settings, then commands | Enable Allow Cheats | World owner or host | Achievements are permanently disabled in that world | The hosted world and its authorized players |
| Bedrock default setting | server.properties |
default-player-permission-level |
Server configuration access | Not stated | New players joining for the first time |
The table separates two settings that are often confused: op PlayerName promotes a specific existing player, while default-player-permission-level defines the starting permission for first-time joiners on a Bedrock server.
Bedrock’s default-player-permission-level setting
Bedrock Dedicated Server’s server.properties file includes default-player-permission-level. The documented values are:
visitormemberoperator
This setting is the permission level for players joining for the first time. It is not a general replacement for promoting an existing player with op PlayerName. If a player has already joined, use the individual console command when you need to change that player’s status.
Changing a server property also has a broader effect than an individual OP command: it establishes the starting level for new players rather than targeting one account. Choose the individual command when you want a controlled, one-player change.

How to remove OP
On Bedrock Dedicated Server, run deop PlayerName in the console. This revokes operator status from that named player. If the player still appears to have elevated access, verify the spelling of the account name and confirm that you changed the same server instance the player is connected to.
Use revocation when temporary administration is no longer needed or when you granted access to the wrong account. Keep the command targeted to the exact player rather than changing a broad default unless you intend to affect future joiners.

OP is controlled by the server, not by a client-side preference. A regular player does not have a legitimate way to grant operator status to their own account on another person’s server. The required authority is either:
- Access to the server console; or
- An existing in-game permission level high enough to execute the OP command.
If you are a player on a community server, contact the owner or an authorized staff member. Do not treat a failed command, a permissions error, or a missing console as an invitation to bypass the server’s controls.

The console says the command is unknown
- Check that you are connected to the correct server console, not a chat box or a different server instance.
- Use the syntax for the edition and server type you are running:
op PlayerNamein the console, or/op PlayerNamein authorized chat. - On Bedrock Dedicated Server, use the documented individual-player command rather than relying on a default permission property.
The command runs but the player is not promoted
- Check the player’s exact account name, including spelling and capitalization as recognized by the server.
- Confirm that the player is connected to the same server on which you entered the command.
- Ensure that you did not edit only
default-player-permission-level; that property concerns first-time joiners and does not automatically promote an existing player.
The command is denied in chat
The chat sender does not have enough permission. Ask an administrator to run the command from the console or from an authorized account. The slash in /op changes how the command is entered, not who is allowed to execute it.

Bedrock achievements disappeared
In a Bedrock world hosted through the game, enabling Allow Cheats permanently prevents achievements in that world, even if cheats are later disabled. This is expected behavior rather than a sign that the OP command failed. Decide whether administrative commands are worth that permanent achievement trade-off before enabling the setting.

The wrong person received OP
Immediately run deop PlayerName on a Bedrock Dedicated Server, using the exact account name that was promoted. Then verify the intended player’s name before repeating op PlayerName. For other server setups, use the server’s corresponding administrative interface to revoke the mistaken grant.
Safer administration practices
Because OP unlocks privileged commands, grant it only to people who need server administration. For a one-time task, remove the privilege afterward. Before pressing Enter, read the target name carefully and confirm that the console belongs to the intended server. Keep the individual-player command separate from broad defaults so a temporary grant does not become the starting permission for every new player.
When several people manage a server, establish who is allowed to use the console and who may approve OP requests. This avoids accidental promotions and makes it clear who should handle a permissions error.
Command quick reference
| Purpose | Java or Bedrock form | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Grant OP to one player | op PlayerName |
Server console |
| Grant OP from authorized chat | /op PlayerName |
In-game chat when the sender already has permission |
| Remove OP on Bedrock Dedicated Server | deop PlayerName |
Bedrock Dedicated Server console |
| Set starting permission for new Bedrock players | default-player-permission-level=visitor, member, or operator |
Bedrock server.properties |
The first three entries act on an individual player or require an already-authorized sender. The final entry is a server-wide default for first-time players, so it should not be substituted for an individual OP grant.
What to check before you press Enter
- You own the server or have explicit administrator authorization.
- You are using the correct console or the correct in-game world.
- The player name is exact.
- You selected the command syntax for Java or Bedrock and for console or chat.
- You understand that Bedrock’s in-game Allow Cheats setting permanently disables achievements in that world.
- You intend to change one player, rather than the first-time default for future Bedrock joiners.
Answer in one sentence
On a server you administer, enter op PlayerName in the server console (or /op PlayerName in authorized chat); if you do not control the server or already have administrative permission, you must ask its owner or staff member instead.
