Hytale Error: “Server Session Token Not Available — Cannot Request Auth Grant” Fix

Hytale rejects players when the dedicated server lacks a session token. Follow the device-code login flow, verify the profile and status, enable encrypted persistence, and troubleshoot startup, network, and credential-file failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Hytale server prints Server session token not available - cannot request auth grant, it has not obtained a usable server session token. The server is therefore unauthenticated and will reject player connections. Fix it from the running server console with /auth login device, complete the browser device-code approval, select the correct profile if prompted, and verify the result with /auth status.

The account owner or server administrator performs this authorization. Players do not enter their passwords or repeat the device login; after authentication, they connect with the server address and port supplied by the operator.

What the error means

The message is an authentication failure, not a player-side connection setting. During startup or a connection handshake, the dedicated server needs a valid session token so it can request an authentication grant for incoming players. When no usable token is available, the log commonly contains:

[SEVERE] [HandshakeHandler] Server session token not available - cannot request auth grant

A related server-authentication-unavailable message may follow. In practical terms, the server has started far enough to accept commands, but it has not established an authenticated server session. The clearest description is: “The server is not authenticated.” Until that state changes, changing a player’s address, reinstalling the game client, or repeatedly retrying the connection will not solve the underlying problem.

Fastest fix: authenticate the running server

Use the live console attached to the exact Hytale server instance that players are trying to join. Do not run the commands in a game chat window or in a different server process.

  1. Start the dedicated server. Wait until its interactive console is available. If startup is still downloading files or reporting an earlier fatal error, resolve that earlier failure first.
  2. Begin device login. At the server console, enter /auth login device and submit it.
  3. Copy the generated authorization details. The console prints a one-time authorization URL and a device code. Open that URL in a browser, sign in to the Hytale account that owns or administers the server, and approve the displayed code.
  4. Choose a profile when asked. If the console lists multiple profiles, run /auth select <number>, replacing <number> with the intended profile’s number.
  5. Check the session. Run /auth status. The output should show an active authenticated session rather than a missing or expired token.
  6. Retry a player connection. Once the status is active, have a player connect using the exact server address and port provided by the operator.

The browser step is an authorization-code flow. It is not completed by typing a normal player password into the server console. Treat the generated URL and code as sensitive, one-time credentials: do not post them in chat, tickets, screenshots, or public logs.

How to select the right account profile

Some accounts expose more than one profile to the server authorization flow. After /auth login device, the console can present a numbered list. Selecting the wrong entry may produce a technically valid session that is not the profile intended to operate this server.

  1. Read the profile list printed by the console.
  2. Identify the profile associated with the server owner’s account and the intended server identity.
  3. Run /auth select <number> with that profile’s number.
  4. Run /auth status again and confirm that the selected profile is active.

If no list appears, do not invent a profile number. Continue with /auth status; if the session is inactive, repeat the device login while the correct account is signed in to the browser.

Keep authentication after a restart

A device login can be valid only for the current runtime when the server does not persist credentials. That explains a common pattern: the server works immediately after login, then returns the session-token error after a stop, crash, update, or host reboot.

Where the installed build supports it, enable encrypted persistence from the server console:

/auth persistence Encrypted

The guides describe this mode as storing credentials in an encrypted file such as auth.enc, which can be loaded on later starts. After setting it:

  1. Run /auth status and confirm that persistence is enabled and the session is active.
  2. Stop and start the same server instance once under normal operating conditions.
  3. Run /auth status after the restart.
  4. Only consider persistence successful if the server comes back authenticated without another device approval.

Protect the credential file with the same care as an account secret. Keep it readable by the server process, but do not expose it through a public download, shared repository, or broadly accessible host directory. If the file is copied to another machine, treat that as a credential transfer and secure the destination accordingly.

When the persistence command is rejected

Hytale is in Early Access and the authentication command set can change between server builds. If /auth persistence Encrypted is rejected, run:

/auth --help

Use the syntax and persistence options displayed by that exact build. Do not assume a command documented for another build is still valid. After using the build’s supported syntax, verify with /auth status and perform one restart test.

If the error remains after device login

When authentication appears to succeed but the handshake error returns, work through the server instance, startup sequence, network path, and credential storage in that order.

Confirm you authenticated the correct process

It is possible to have more than one Hytale server directory or process. A login performed in one console does not authenticate a different instance launched from another directory. Keep the console open for the server that owns the address and port players are using, run /auth status there, and watch that same console while a player retries.

Read the complete startup log

Do not rely only on the last line visible in the interactive console. Authentication may be delayed while downloader setup runs, after an earlier startup problem, or while a session-token broker stage is still pending. Review the full startup log from process launch through the failed connection attempt. Look for:

  • an earlier fatal or configuration error that prevented normal initialization;
  • downloader or update setup that has not finished;
  • messages showing the authentication request was attempted, delayed, or rejected;
  • the point at which the server reports its session state.

If an earlier failure stops startup, fix that first, restart the server, and repeat the device login for the newly running instance.

Check outbound network access

The server must reach Hytale’s authentication services to obtain or refresh its session. Check the host’s outbound firewall, DNS resolution, proxy rules, and any security product that intercepts TLS traffic. A server can accept local console commands while still being unable to contact the external authentication service.

After correcting outbound access, restart the server or repeat /auth login device for the current process, then run /auth status. A previously printed device code may have expired; generate a new one rather than reusing an old code.

Check the encrypted credential file

If persistence is enabled, confirm that the encrypted credential file exists at the location used by that server build and that the account running the server can read it. A full disk, read-only directory, incorrect ownership, or restrictive permissions can prevent the file from being created or loaded.

  • Verify the directory is writable by the Hytale server process.
  • Check that the file was not deleted during a container rebuild, update, or cleanup task.
  • Ensure backup or synchronization software is not replacing it with an older copy.
  • After correcting permissions or storage, run /auth status and restart once.

If the file is missing or unusable, perform a fresh device login. Persistence is a convenience for later starts; it does not replace the ability to reauthorize the current instance.

Repeat authorization for the current runtime

Session tokens can expire or become invalid after an account change, server update, or prolonged downtime. Run /auth login device again in the currently running console, complete the newly generated browser flow, select the intended profile, and verify with /auth status. Always use the URL and code generated for that runtime, not details copied from an older log.

Who needs to authenticate?

Only the server owner or an administrator with authority over the Hytale account performs the device authorization. Players joining the server do not repeat it and should never be asked for the operator’s device code or account password.

Once the server reports an active session, provide players with the exact address and port. If they still cannot connect, investigate ordinary reachability issues separately—such as an incorrect address, closed listening port, or server that has stopped—rather than repeating account authorization on every player device.

Self-hosted server or managed hosting?

The authentication error can occur in either arrangement. The practical difference is who controls the console, credential files, network egress, updates, and recovery process.

Decision area Self-hosted server Managed hosting
Console access You normally control the local or remote console and can run the authentication commands directly. A provider panel or web console may expose the commands; confirm that interactive device login is supported.
Credential persistence You choose the encrypted-file location, permissions, backups, and restart behavior. Ask whether credentials survive restarts, migrations, and reinstalls, and who can access the stored file.
Outbound network You control firewall, DNS, proxy, and egress policies. Verify that the host permits outbound connections to Hytale authentication services.
Updates You are responsible for matching command syntax to the installed Early Access build. Confirm who applies updates and whether an update can invalidate or remove persisted credentials.
File access You can inspect startup logs and the encrypted credential file directly. Check what log and file access the provider supplies before relying on persistence.
Recovery support You must repeat device login and repair storage or network failures yourself. Support may help with console or host failures, but account authorization should remain under your control.

Choose the arrangement that gives you the access needed to complete device authorization and verify persistence. A managed panel is not automatically authenticated merely because the server process is running; the operator must still confirm the session state.

Operational checklist

Use this checklist whenever the message appears after a restart or update:

  1. Open the console for the exact server instance serving players.
  2. Run /auth status and record whether the session is active.
  3. If inactive, run /auth login device.
  4. Open the newly printed URL, sign in to the administrator’s Hytale account, and approve the displayed code.
  5. Select the intended profile with /auth select <number> if the console asks.
  6. Run /auth status again.
  7. Enable encrypted persistence with /auth persistence Encrypted when supported, or consult /auth --help for the build’s syntax.
  8. Check that the encrypted credential file is present and writable.
  9. Review the full startup log for downloader, broker, or earlier initialization failures.
  10. Verify outbound network access, then restart once and confirm the session remains active.

What not to do

  • Do not enter a normal player password into the server console; the flow uses a browser URL and device code.
  • Do not share the generated URL, device code, or encrypted credential file.
  • Do not keep retrying player connections while /auth status shows no active session.
  • Do not copy command syntax from a different Early Access build without checking /auth --help.
  • Do not assume a successful login in one server directory applies to every Hytale server process on the machine.

Once /auth status confirms an active session, the “server session token not available” condition is resolved. Any remaining inability to join should then be diagnosed as a separate server availability or address-and-port problem.
