Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The reliable pattern is to have cron run mysqladmin ping with an explicit connection target and protected credentials, then restart the MySQL service only when the documented health check fails. Use systemctl restart mysql on Debian-family systems or systemctl restart mysqld on most RPM-family installations, after confirming the unit name. A production-safe job also needs a lock, absolute paths, timestamps, post-restart verification, and an alert when failures repeat.

What the cron monitor should—and should not—decide
A cron watchdog has one narrow job: determine whether the MySQL server is answering, request a controlled service restart when it is not, and leave an audit trail for a human to investigate. It is not a substitute for database monitoring, replication checks, query-latency checks, backups, or root-cause analysis.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
mysqladmin ping is the appropriate first test because it contacts the MySQL server itself. Oracle’s MySQL 8.0 documentation defines its return status as 0 when the server is running and 1 when it is not. An authentication refusal can still return 0: the server was reachable but rejected the credentials. That distinction prevents an unnecessary restart, but it also means a ping alone does not prove that the account can run application queries.
systemctl status answers a different question. It reports the state of the service unit and process as seen by systemd; a unit can be active while the server is stuck, listening on a different socket, or unable to accept useful work. Conversely, a brief startup period can make the process appear inactive even though recovery is progressing. Use the two checks together: ping for availability, and the service manager for recovery.

Identify the service manager and unit before writing cron
Do this interactively as an administrator. Do not guess the unit name from a tutorial: distributions and installation methods differ.
- Check the common Debian-family name:
systemctl status mysql --no-pager
- Check the common RPM-family name:
systemctl status mysqld --no-pager
- List installed unit files if neither command identifies the service:
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -E '^(mysql|mysqld).service'
Record the exact unit that reports the installed MySQL server. Debian-based and SLES systems may use mysql; many RPM-family installations use mysqld. Put that value in the script rather than attempting unreliable automatic detection every minute.
If the host does not use systemd, the documented alternatives on Unix-like systems include the distribution’s mysql.server script or mysqld_safe. Find out how the machine normally starts MySQL and use that same mechanism for recovery. Do not mix a direct mysqld_safe launch with a systemd-managed instance; two supervisors can create competing processes and misleading status reports.
Give the check an explicit connection target
Cron starts commands with a minimal environment, so an implicit socket, host, home directory, or PATH can differ from your interactive shell. Make the endpoint and credentials explicit.
Choose TCP or a Unix socket deliberately
--host=127.0.0.1 forces a local TCP connection. --host=localhost commonly selects a Unix socket, depending on the client configuration. If the server listens only on a socket, specify it directly with --socket=/path/to/mysql.sock. Use the same endpoint that the application or administrator has confirmed, and keep it consistent in every test.
Use a login path
A login path stores client connection settings in an encrypted login file rather than exposing a password in the process list or crontab. Create it as the account that will run the cron job; a login path created for one home directory is not automatically available to another user.

mysqladmin --login-path=cron --connect-timeout=5 ping
If cron will run as root, create the login path for root or explicitly point to a protected file owned by the cron account. If it will run as a dedicated service user, test the command as that user.
Use a protected option file when a login path is unavailable
Create a file readable only by the account running the job:
[client]
host=127.0.0.1
user=cron_ping
password=replace-with-the-account-password
connect-timeout=5
Store it outside web-accessible directories and restrict it:
Recommended Free Tools
chmod 600 /etc/mysql/cron-client.cnf
chown mysqlwatch:mysqlwatch /etc/mysql/cron-client.cnf
Invoke it with --defaults-extra-file. MySQL clients require that option to appear first among the client options:
mysqladmin --defaults-extra-file=/etc/mysql/cron-client.cnf ping
Never put a password directly in the crontab, a command-line argument, or a world-readable script. A monitoring account needs only the ability to connect for the chosen health check; do not grant application write privileges merely to test availability.
Install a restart-aware watchdog script
The following Bash script is intentionally conservative. It uses a non-blocking flock lock, records the ping output and exit status, restarts a preselected systemd unit only for the documented “not running” status, and verifies recovery for up to 30 seconds. Adjust paths after checking them with command -v.

Set MYSQL_SERVICE to the unit you verified earlier. Set MYSQLADMIN, SYSTEMCTL, and flock to the paths returned by command -v if your host installs them elsewhere. The script assumes the log file and /run/lock location are writable by its user. A root-owned script and root cron entry avoid most permission surprises; a dedicated account requires narrowly scoped permission to restart the selected unit.
Install the cron entry with a predictable environment
For a script that must restart a system service, a root crontab is usually simplest:
sudo crontab -e
Add explicit environment settings and run it once per minute:
SHELL=/bin/bash
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin
[email protected]
* * * * * /usr/local/sbin/mysql-cron-watchdog
Replace the mailbox with an address that is actually handled on the host, or set MAILTO= and rely on your logging and alerting system. Cron’s one-minute granularity is adequate for a basic watchdog but is not a guarantee that every failure is detected within exactly 60 seconds; scheduling, load, and startup time add delay.
If policy forbids root cron, grant a dedicated account only the required systemctl restart operation through the host’s privilege mechanism, and use non-interactive authentication. A command that prompts for a password, requires a terminal, or depends on an interactive shell will fail under cron. Test the exact privilege command with a non-interactive option before deploying it.
Test under the same user and environment cron uses
Do not treat a successful interactive test as proof that cron will work. Check each layer in order:
- Confirm the binaries and unit name:
command -v mysqladmin
command -v systemctl
systemctl status mysql --no-pager
- Run the ping as the cron user, using the same login path or option file:
sudo -u mysqlwatch --preserve-env=HOME /usr/bin/mysqladmin --login-path=cron --connect-timeout=5 ping
If the login path belongs to root, run the test as root instead. The important point is that the account, home directory, and credential file match cron.

- Run the complete script directly:
/usr/local/sbin/mysql-cron-watchdog
tail -n 30 /var/log/mysql-cron-watchdog.log
- Exercise recovery in a maintenance window by stopping the service through the normal service manager, then watch the log while the next cron invocation runs. Confirm that the service starts, the post-restart ping succeeds, and the log contains the restart result.
Do not repeatedly stop a production database just to test automation. A staging host or a planned maintenance window is safer, particularly when the database performs crash recovery or serves stateful applications.
Understand the exit statuses before adding restart logic
| Result | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
mysqladmin ping exits 0 |
The MySQL server answered. This can include an “Access denied” response because the server is reachable. | Do not restart. Investigate credentials separately if authenticated work is failing. |
mysqladmin ping exits 1 |
Oracle documents this as the server not running. | Attempt the verified service-manager restart, then poll until the server answers. |
| Any other or unexpected result | The check may have failed because of a missing binary, malformed options, an environment problem, or an implementation-specific error. | Log and alert without blindly restarting. Fix the check first. |
systemctl status reports active |
The unit is active from systemd’s perspective. | Still perform a MySQL-level ping; process state alone is not an application health check. |
The script deliberately does not treat an authentication refusal as a stopped server. If the password has expired or the account is disabled, restarting MySQL cannot fix it. Correct the account or credential file, and keep a separate authenticated query check if your monitoring requirements include query authorization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prevent silent restart loops
A one-minute job can repeatedly restart a service for hours while hiding the real cause. Common underlying problems include a full filesystem, invalid configuration, an exhausted memory limit, damaged tables, permission changes, a failed storage device, or a long crash-recovery operation. Every restart should therefore be observable.
Keep a dedicated log
The example records an ISO 8601 timestamp, the ping exit code, command output, restart result, and each post-restart attempt. Configure log rotation so an outage cannot fill the filesystem with watchdog output. Do not log passwords, complete option-file contents, or other secrets.
Alert on repeated failures
Send an alert when a restart fails or when the post-restart ping remains unsuccessful after the 30-second recovery window. You can route the logger messages into the host’s existing monitoring or central syslog system. A useful policy is to page after several consecutive failures while creating a lower-priority event for the first failure. Include the unit name, last exit status, and a link to the host’s service logs in the alert generated by your monitoring system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAdd a restart budget or maintenance suppression
The lock prevents overlapping jobs, not repeated attempts on successive minutes. For a critical database, add a state file that counts consecutive failures and stops automatic restarts after a defined limit, such as three attempts in 15 minutes. Clear the counter only after a successful ping. Also provide a maintenance flag so planned shutdowns do not trigger an automatic start. The exact threshold is an operational policy; choose it according to recovery time and the damage an unattended restart could cause.
Read the service journal after every failed recovery
journalctl -u mysql --since "10 minutes ago" --no-pager
journalctl -u mysqld --since "10 minutes ago" --no-pager
Use the unit that exists on the host. The journal often identifies configuration syntax errors, permission failures, missing directories, storage exhaustion, or crash-recovery progress that a cron log cannot explain.
Best Value
Choose the right health and recovery mechanism
| Approach | What it measures | Recovery authority | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
mysqladmin ping |
Whether the MySQL server responds to a client ping. | None by itself; pair it with a service manager. | Exit 0 can include access denial, and a ping does not validate application queries. |
systemctl status or systemctl is-active |
Whether systemd considers the registered unit active. | Can start, stop, or restart the registered unit. | A running process can be unhealthy at the SQL layer; the unit name varies by distribution. |
mysql.server or mysqld_safe |
Depends on the script and its startup options. | Direct script-controlled startup where systemd is not used. | Requires exact paths, environment, ownership, configuration, and process-management knowledge. |
For a systemd-managed installation, the practical combination is a MySQL-level ping followed by systemctl restart. Direct startup scripts are appropriate only when they are already the host’s supported supervisor.
Diagnose the failures cron commonly exposes
The command works in a shell but fails from cron
Check PATH, the current user’s home directory, the login-path file owner, and the explicit binary paths. Run the script with the cron user’s identity and a minimal environment. Do not rely on aliases, shell profiles, or exported variables from an interactive session.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The ping reports access denied but the script does not restart
That is expected: the server answered, so mysqladmin returns 0 according to the MySQL documentation. Verify the login path or option file, account host pattern, password status, and authentication plugin. If you need to prove authorization, add a separate, intentionally authenticated check; do not convert access denial into an automatic restart.
The restart command says the unit is not found
Run systemctl list-unit-files and inspect both mysql and mysqld. The machine may use a vendor-specific unit or may not use systemd at all. Update the script only after confirming the unit manually.
The restart succeeds but the next ping still fails
Inspect the journal, disk space, ownership of the data and runtime directories, configuration syntax, port or socket settings, and crash-recovery messages. The example waits 30 seconds, but a large database may need longer. Increase the verification window only after measuring normal startup time; do not hide a persistent failure with an indefinitely long sleep.
The job starts MySQL during planned maintenance
Disable or mask the cron entry during the maintenance window, or implement a clearly documented maintenance flag that the script checks before restarting. Record who enabled and removed the suppression so it cannot become a permanent blind spot.

The log grows until the disk fills
Configure the operating system’s log rotation for the dedicated file, retain enough history to investigate repeated crashes, and monitor free space. A full filesystem can itself prevent MySQL from starting, creating a self-reinforcing outage.
Operational checklist
- Confirm whether the service unit is
mysql, mysqld, or another supported unit. - Choose an explicit host, socket, or port and a short client timeout.
- Store credentials in a login path or a mode-600 option file, never in crontab arguments.
- Run
mysqladmin pingas the same user and with the same home directory cron will use. - Treat exit 0 as reachable—even when the server returned access denied—and exit 1 as the documented stopped-server result.
- Restart through the host’s service manager instead of launching a second daemon by hand.
- Serialize executions with a lock and use absolute command paths.
- Log timestamps, exit codes, restart output, and post-restart checks without secrets.
- Alert on failed restarts and repeated unsuccessful recovery; investigate the journal rather than allowing an endless loop.
- Test the complete path during maintenance or on a staging host, then review the logs after deployment.
With those controls in place, cron remains a simple availability watchdog rather than a concealed process launcher: it checks the server, uses the correct authority to recover it, and produces enough evidence to fix the underlying fault.
