Hytale’s dedicated server uses UDP port 5520 by default. It runs QUIC over UDP, so you do not need a TCP rule. For an internet-accessible self-hosted server, forward UDP 5520 from your router to the server PC and allow inbound UDP 5520 in that computer’s firewall. If you select another port with --bind, use that same UDP number in the server, firewall, and router.

What port does Hytale use?
The documented default endpoint for a Hytale dedicated server is 0.0.0.0:5520. The 0.0.0.0 bind means the process listens on all IPv4 interfaces on the server machine; 5520 is the port number.

Hytale’s transport is QUIC over UDP, not TCP. A router rule created as TCP-only will therefore not pass normal game traffic. Create a UDP rule, or choose “Both” only when your router cannot separate protocols. A TCP rule by itself does not substitute for UDP forwarding.
These defaults are documented in Hypixel Studios’ Hytale Server Manual, updated October 12, 2026. The number applies to the dedicated-server process; a singleplayer world shared with friends can use a different port selected by the game.

Choose the hosting method before changing your router
Port forwarding is needed only when the host must accept an inbound connection from outside the local network. The three common arrangements behave differently:

If you simply want friends to join a world occasionally, try the in-game Online Play route first. Use a dedicated server when you need an independently running process, control of server files, or a world that is not tied to one player’s game session.

Do these checks before creating a forwarding rule:
- Know which computer runs the Hytale server and sign in with permission to change its firewall.
- Give that computer a stable local IPv4 address, either by configuring a static address or creating a DHCP reservation in the router. A rule aimed at an address that later changes will point to the wrong device.
- Have administrator access to the router. Locate its Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server, or Applications and Gaming page; names vary by manufacturer.
- Confirm whether the home connection has one router or more than one. A second router, mesh gateway, or ISP modem/router can create double NAT.
- Start the server normally and check its startup output or help screen. The manual shows
--binddefaulting to0.0.0.0:5520.
Do not forward a port until the server works from the same computer or another device on the same LAN. Local success confirms that the process is running; internet success additionally requires the host firewall, router, and ISP path to permit inbound UDP.
Open the default port for a dedicated server
1. Start the server and keep the bind value consistent
Launch the dedicated server with its normal command line. Unless you deliberately changed it, leave the bind at the documented default. If the process reports a different port, use the reported value instead of assuming the default.
2. Reserve the server computer’s local address
In the router’s LAN or DHCP settings, reserve the current local address for the server computer’s network adapter. Record the address, for example 192.168.1.50. The example is only a format illustration; use the address assigned in your network.
3. Create the router forwarding rule
- Open the router administration page and choose Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server, or the equivalent menu.
- Create a rule named something recognizable, such as “Hytale Server.”
- Set the protocol to UDP.
- Set the external or public port to 5520.
- Set the destination or internal address to the server computer’s reserved local IP.
- Set the internal port to 5520.
- Enable and save the rule. Some routers require an additional Apply or reboot step.
The resulting mapping is public UDP 5520 to the server computer’s UDP 5520. Do not map the rule to the router itself or to a different PC.

4. Allow UDP 5520 through the host firewall
On Windows, open PowerShell as Administrator and run:
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Hytale Server" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 5520 -Action AllowThe rule permits inbound UDP traffic on that local port. If Windows Firewall asks which network profiles apply, allow the profile used by the server’s connection and avoid exposing unrelated services.
On Linux, use the firewall system active on the machine. The official examples are:
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 5520 -j ACCEPTsudo ufw allow 5520/udpDo not blindly configure both systems if only one is active. Check your distribution’s firewall status and make the rule persistent according to that firewall’s normal procedure.

Players outside your home network need the public address and the port required by your server setup. They should not use the server’s private address such as 192.168.x.x. Keep administrative services off the same public interface; the game rule should expose only the UDP port needed for Hytale.
Use a custom port when 5520 is unavailable
A different port is valid when another service already uses 5520, your network policy requires a change, or you want a distinct rule for several servers. The value must match in every layer.

For example, the manual shows a launch command using port 3500:
java -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip --bind 3500With that command, create a router rule for external UDP 3500 to the server computer’s internal UDP 3500, and allow UDP 3500 in the host firewall. Players must use the public address and the custom port expected by the server. A mismatch—such as binding 3500 while forwarding 5520—leaves the service unreachable even though each individual setting appears valid.
When changing ports, remove or disable obsolete forwarding and firewall rules after confirming the new one works. This reduces the number of exposed services and makes later troubleshooting clearer.
Sharing a singleplayer world with friends
A friend world is not configured like a dedicated server. In Hytale, open Online Play, enable Allow Other Players to Join, and save the setting. Hytale attempts direct or relayed connectivity automatically. Hypixel Studios’ Joining Friends guidance, updated October 12, 2026, says you normally do not need to change the router unless the game tells you to.
If the Online Play details specifically say that the router does not forward ports, the game should display the UDP port it needs. In that case:
- Note the UDP port shown in the Online Play details.
- Forward that external UDP port to the host PC’s current local IP, using the same internal port unless the game indicates otherwise.
- Allow the same UDP port through the host computer’s firewall.
- Save Online Play again, then have the friend retry the join.
Do not substitute the dedicated server default merely because it is 5520. The friend-world port shown by Hytale is the authoritative value for that session.

Why friends still cannot connect
The server works locally but not from the internet
This usually means the process is running but one network layer is missing. Verify the server’s bind port, the host firewall rule, and the router’s destination IP. Confirm that the router rule is UDP, not TCP, and that external and internal port numbers match the value used by --bind.
Double NAT blocks the forwarding rule
Double NAT occurs when an ISP modem/router and your own router both perform address translation. Forwarding on only the inner router leaves the outer device without a route to the server. Forward the port through both devices, put the ISP device into bridge mode when supported, or connect the server to the main router so only one NAT device handles the path.
Carrier-grade NAT prevents inbound forwarding
Some ISPs place multiple homes behind one shared public IPv4 address. In that arrangement, your router can create a rule, but unsolicited traffic never reaches it. Hypixel Studios notes that port forwarding cannot work when the provider does this. Ask the ISP for a public IP service, or use a private overlay such as Tailscale when every participant can install and use it.

Windows Firewall or security software is interfering
Recheck the inbound UDP rule and the network profile assigned to the server connection. Antivirus and endpoint-security products can also block the process even when the Windows rule is present. Temporarily test with the security product’s Hytale exception enabled, then restore normal protection and keep only the narrow UDP rule required for the server.
The wrong protocol was forwarded
QUIC uses UDP. A TCP-only rule, or a rule that forwards UDP to the wrong internal port, will not carry Hytale’s normal traffic. Replace it with a UDP rule and remove duplicate rules that point to another machine.
The custom port is inconsistent
Read the actual launch command and server log. If --bind specifies 3500, every firewall and router entry must permit UDP 3500, and players must use the corresponding public port. Restart the server after changing its bind value so the new listener is active.
IPv6 changes the path
When both players have working IPv6 connectivity, Hytale can use an IPv6 address without IPv4 NAT port forwarding. This does not fix an IPv4-only or filtered network, and the host firewall must still allow the server traffic on the relevant interface.

School, office, or public Wi-Fi blocks the traffic
Managed networks may block game traffic or peer-to-peer connections regardless of your home-router settings. Test from a permitted network. If policy allows it, use an approved VPN or overlay solution; do not bypass an organization’s security controls without permission.
Security and reliability checks
- Forward only the Hytale UDP port; do not expose remote administration, file-sharing, or database services to the same public interface.
- Keep the server computer’s local address reserved so the forwarding rule remains accurate.
- Apply Hytale server and operating-system updates, and keep backups of world and configuration files before upgrades.
- Review the router and firewall rules after changing ports or moving the server to another machine.
- Turn off the forwarding rule when the server is no longer needed, particularly on a computer that is not regularly maintained.
- Share the public address only with players who need it, and never publish administrative credentials.
When managed hosting is the better choice
A managed Hytale host removes most home-network work. Hypixel Studios says managed providers handle networking, hardware, maintenance, 24/7 availability, and updates, so you generally do not configure UPnP or forward a port on your home router.
Choose self-hosting when you want maximum control over files and mods, already have a reliable always-on machine, and can troubleshoot NAT and firewall issues. Choose managed hosting when uptime while you are offline matters more than owning the hardware, or when your ISP uses CGNAT and cannot provide a public address. Compare the provider’s file access, mod support, backup policy, player limits, maintenance windows, and recurring fee before subscribing; the cited Hytale documentation does not establish prices or performance figures.
Final verification checklist
- Confirm the server is listening on the intended bind address and port.
- Confirm the router forwards that exact port as UDP to the server computer’s reserved local IP.
- Confirm the host firewall allows inbound UDP on the same port.
- Test from outside the home network, not only from the host PC or local Wi-Fi.
- If it fails, check double NAT, CGNAT, security software, and restricted-network policies before changing random settings.
For the standard dedicated-server setup, the complete path is therefore: Hytale listening on UDP 5520, the host firewall allowing UDP 5520, and the router forwarding external UDP 5520 to the server’s fixed local address.
