To host Star Technology, download the matching official server-files release for the client version you intend to run, install its Forge server files on a supported Java machine, accept Minecraft’s EULA, open a reachable network port, and give every player the identical Minecraft, Forge, and modpack versions. Star Technology’s README lists 4GB as the minimum and 6GB or more as recommended; practical third-party planning guidance is about 6–8GB for a small group, with additional headroom for larger groups and heavy automation.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
You can run it on a home computer, a virtual private server (VPS), or managed Minecraft hosting. The first option gives the most control and no recurring hosting bill, but you handle networking, updates, backups, security, and troubleshooting. A VPS removes the server from your home network while retaining most administrative work. Managed hosting automates much of the Forge and modpack setup in exchange for a recurring fee and less control.

Star Technology is a skyblock-oriented Minecraft modpack built around GregTech CEu Modern. The StarT Dev Team describes its objective as progressing toward Stargates that enable travel across dimensions. The official project lists Forge releases for Minecraft 1.20.1 and an older 1.19.2 branch. CurseForge identifies it as one of the early GregTech CEu Modern packs.
The version distinction matters when you host. A 1.20.1 client cannot normally join a 1.19.2 server, and a client assembled from a different pack build can fail even when the Minecraft version appears correct. The project is still under development, so file names, release builds, and included scripts may change. Check the official Star Technology files page immediately before downloading, and select a dedicated server-files release that exactly matches the client release you will distribute to players.

Server pack versus a copied client instance
Use the project’s server-files archive rather than copying a random client profile. A client instance can contain graphics settings, launcher metadata, optional files, or single-player configuration that a dedicated server does not need. The official server pack is the intended starting point for Forge installation and server-side configuration.
Hardware and network requirements
The project README states “Minimum RAM: 4GB | Recommended: 6GB+.” That is a baseline from the pack’s developers, not a guaranteed player capacity. A server consumes memory for Forge, loaded chunks, machines, automation systems, entities, and the operating system. Skyblock progression can also become more demanding as players build chunk loaders and large GregTech production lines.

| Planning item | Published guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Memory minimum | 4GB | StarT Dev Team README minimum; leave operating-system headroom rather than assigning all memory to Java. |
| Memory recommendation | 6GB or more | Project README recommendation for a typical server; not a performance guarantee. |
| Small group | About 6–8GB | Third-party hosting guidance for a small multiplayer group; actual use depends on view distance, loaded chunks, and automation. |
| Five or more players | 8–10GB | GameTeam planning guidance, not a reproducible benchmark. |
| Ten or more players | 10–12GB | DedicatedMinecraft.host planning guidance; treat it as a starting range rather than a fixed capacity. |
| CPU | Modern quad-core recommended | Useful headroom for Forge tick processing and simultaneous automation; the sources do not specify a particular model. |
| Storage | At least 10GB SSD space | GameTeam guidance for the server, files, and growth; reserve additional space for backups. |
| Upload bandwidth | At least 10Mbps upload | GameTeam guidance for internet hosting; stability and latency matter as much as the headline speed. |
These figures should guide capacity planning, not promise a player count. Two groups with the same number of players can have very different loads because of simulation distance, chunk-loading devices, farms, machines, exploration, and how many chunks remain active. Start with the recommended range, watch memory and tick behavior during real play, and scale only when the host has spare CPU, storage, and network capacity.
Choose a hosting route
| Route | Upfront and recurring cost | Setup effort | Control | Uptime and network | Backups and updates | Scalability and support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted computer | No recurring host fee if you already own suitable hardware; electricity and hardware costs remain. | Highest: Forge, Java, firewall, router, scripts, and troubleshooting are yours. | Full access to files, Java options, and configuration. | Depends on home power, ISP upload, latency, and router availability. | You create and test backups and perform every update. | Limited by your hardware and connection; support is self-administered. |
| VPS | Recurring VPS charge; exact pricing is not established here. | High: you still administer the operating system, Java, Forge, firewall, files, and backups. | Broad administrative control, subject to the VPS provider. | Usually separates the server from a home network; quality depends on the chosen region and plan. | You remain responsible unless the VPS plan explicitly includes reliable backups. | Can scale resources more easily than a home PC; Linux or equivalent administration knowledge is expected. |
| Managed Minecraft hosting | Recurring hosting charge; price, limits, and renewal terms vary by provider. | Lowest when the pack is available in the control panel; verify the exact release before ordering. | Panel-level control, with less operating-system access than a VPS. | Provider supplies the data-center connection; location and resource contention still matter. | Panel tools may automate installation and backups, but policy, retention, and restore testing must be checked. | Easier resource changes and support; confirm current pack availability, RAM allocation, region, and support scope. |
Self-host when you want control
A spare desktop or home server is a good fit when you can keep it powered on, provide stable upload bandwidth, configure the router and firewall, and maintain independent backups. You avoid a recurring host bill and can inspect every file and setting. In return, you are responsible for patching the operating system, securing remote access, recovering from disk failure, handling outages, and diagnosing Forge or mod conflicts.

Use a VPS when home networking is the limitation
A VPS places the server in a data center, avoiding residential port-forwarding issues and often improving uptime. It does not make administration disappear: Java, Forge, permissions, firewall rules, backups, operating-system updates, and server monitoring remain your tasks. Choose this route only if you are comfortable administering Linux or an equivalent server environment.
Choose managed hosting for the least administration
Managed Minecraft panels can install a Star Technology pack from a CurseForge library and apply Forge settings without requiring you to build the server by hand. One-click installation is convenient, but it is not a substitute for checking details. Before paying, verify that the panel offers the current 1.20.1 server pack (or the specific release your group uses), allocates enough RAM, supports the required Forge build, provides a backup and restore process, and has a data-center location suitable for your players. Confirm whether advertised support covers modpack problems and whether any provider recommendation is part of an affiliate arrangement.

Install a self-hosted Star Technology server
The following workflow applies to a computer or VPS where you control the files. Exact filenames and helper scripts can change between releases, so follow the instructions included in the server archive whenever they differ.
- Pick the exact release. Open the official Star Technology files page on CurseForge. Select a dedicated server-files release that matches the Minecraft version, Forge version, Star Technology build, and pack mode used by your players. Do not mix the 1.20.1 and 1.19.2 branches, and do not substitute an arbitrary client export.
- Create a dedicated directory. Make a new folder used only by this server, with enough SSD space for the archive, generated world, logs, configuration, and backups. Avoid storing the live world inside a synchronised consumer folder that may lock or partially upload files while the server is running.
- Extract the archive. Unpack the server files into that directory. Preserve the folder structure and inspect the included README, launch scripts, Forge installer, and configuration files before running anything.
- Install Forge for the server. Run the included Forge installer on a supported Java installation and choose the server-install option. If the pack supplies a start script, use that script or adapt it only after reading its comments; it may set the intended Forge libraries or working directory.
- Start once to generate files. Launch the server and wait for Forge to create its initial files. The first run can stop while Minecraft requests EULA acceptance. Read the console output for Java, permission, or installer errors rather than repeatedly restarting blindly.
- Accept the EULA. Stop the process if it is still running, open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save the file, and start the server again. You must accept the EULA before allowing players to connect. - Set basic server options. Open
server.propertiesand choose the world name, difficulty, and other settings your group needs. Keep the configuration readable and record any changes so you can reproduce them after a failed update. - Secure the files. Run the server under a dedicated operating-system account where practical, restrict write access to the server directory, and do not expose administrative files or remote-console credentials unnecessarily. Keep the live world separate from your backup destination.
- Open the network path. Allow the configured Minecraft server port through the host firewall. If players connect from outside your home, forward that same port from the router to the server’s local address and ensure the server is listening on the intended interface. Test from a different network; a connection that works only from the host computer does not prove internet reachability.
- Distribute matching client details. Give players the exact Minecraft version, Forge version, Star Technology build, and required pack mode. Have everyone install from the same release rather than combining individual mods or updating one side early.
First-launch checks and ongoing operation
Confirm the server is actually ready
- Wait for the console to report that the server has completed startup before connecting.
- Join locally first, then test an external connection from a friend or a separate network.
- Watch the log while a player joins and travels; missing-mod, registry, and version errors usually identify the mismatch.
- Verify that the world saves when the server shuts down cleanly.
Back up before every risky change
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world whenever possible. Back up the world, server.properties, Forge and pack configuration, scripts, and any permissions or whitelist files. Keep at least one copy outside the live machine. Test that a backup can be opened or restored before you rely on it; a folder that was copied during active writes may not be a usable recovery point.
Best Value
Update server and clients together
Do not update Forge or Star Technology on only one side. Record the current build, stop the server, take a backup, install the new server-files release, and then update every client to the same combination. If the new pack introduces a different mode or world requirement, test it on a copied world first. A failed update is much easier to reverse when the old server directory and backup are intact.
Monitor automation and tick health
As GregTech production expands, inspect areas with dense machines, farms, entities, and chunk loaders. If the server begins slowing, identify the busiest locations before simply assigning more memory. Reducing view distance or simulation distance and limiting unnecessary chunk loaders can lower active work; additional RAM helps only when memory pressure is the actual bottleneck and the host has enough physical memory.
Recommended Free Tools
Troubleshooting common failures
The server will not start
- Confirm that the Java installation is supported by the current Forge and pack release, and that the launcher is using that installation rather than another system Java.
- Read the first meaningful error in the server log and the Forge installer output. A later cascade of errors is often a consequence, not the root cause.
- Check available heap and disk space. Four gigabytes is the project’s stated minimum, but the operating system and other processes still need memory.
- Verify file permissions and the working directory used by the launch script. A script started from the wrong directory may not find Forge libraries or configuration files.
- Restore the last known-good server directory or backup if the failure began immediately after a pack, Forge, or configuration change.
Players receive a mod or registry mismatch
- Compare the Minecraft version, Forge release, Star Technology build, and pack mode on the server and every client.
- Make sure players used the official matching server/client release rather than an older profile with manually added or removed mods.
- Ask the affected player to check the launcher’s actual profile path; changing a visible label does not change the installed files.
- Read the server log for the missing or mismatched mod name before changing configuration.
Friends cannot connect
- Check that the server is running and bound to the expected address and port in
server.properties. - Allow the port through the host firewall and, for a home server, forward it from the router to the server’s local address.
- Confirm that the public address given to friends is current and that the ISP or router is not blocking inbound connections.
- Test locally and externally to separate a server configuration problem from a router or ISP problem.
The server lags or ticks slow down
- Reduce view distance and simulation distance, then retest during the same activity.
- Limit chunk loaders and inspect the heaviest automation areas, machines, farms, and entity concentrations.
- Check CPU, memory, disk, and network use rather than assuming RAM is the only cause.
- Add memory only within the host’s physical capacity and only after confirming memory pressure; excessive allocation can leave too little for the operating system.
- Back up before disabling machines or changing world settings, especially in a progressing GregTech base.
Which option fits your group?
Choose self-hosting if all of these are true
- You have hardware that can provide at least the project’s recommended memory range, with additional headroom for your workload.
- Your upload connection is stable, and you can configure firewall and router rules.
- You are willing to perform Forge and pack updates, monitor logs, and maintain tested backups.
- Occasional home-network or power outages are acceptable, or you have your own redundancy plan.
Choose a VPS if these conditions matter
- You want the server outside a residential network.
- You can administer an operating system and secure a public-facing machine.
- You need more predictable uptime than a home computer can provide but still want file-level control.
Choose managed hosting when administration is the obstacle
- You prefer a panel that can install the pack and Forge for you.
- You want provider-side infrastructure and support rather than maintaining Java, port forwarding, and operating-system updates.
- You have verified the provider’s current Star Technology release, allocated RAM, backup retention, restore procedure, region, and support terms.
There is no cited performance benchmark that converts a particular RAM amount or CPU into a guaranteed player count. Treat the published memory ranges as planning guidance, start conservatively, and adjust after observing your own players, chunks, and automation.
