It can make deployment and day-to-day operations more unified, but it does not eliminate infrastructure decisions: it concentrates them in choices about platform fit, hardware, licensing, resilience, cloud integration and future migration. HCI is a significant part of the integrated-systems market—not a proven winner across all infrastructure spending.
What is hyperconverged infrastructure?
HCI brings together functions that organizations traditionally bought and managed separately—especially server compute, storage and virtualization—within a software-defined cluster. A management layer coordinates those resources. The exact scope varies: some offerings also include network management, while others leave parts of networking or operations in separate systems.

VMware defines HCI as “a software-defined, unified system that combines all the elements of a traditional data center: storage, computing, networking, and management.” That is VMware’s vendor definition, not a universal standard that every product implements identically. Gartner’s 2024 guide describes full-stack HCI in terms of server, storage and network infrastructure management capabilities, and notes that vendor offerings differ in focus and purchasing options.

The practical promise is a stack that can be operated more like one system. The corresponding responsibility is to understand its lifecycle and dependencies as one system too.

What does “won the battle” mean—and what does it not mean?
HCI has a prominent position within integrated systems, a category of pre-integrated infrastructure products. Gartner’s April 30, 2024 Market Guide for Integrated Systems reported that hyperconverged integrated systems (HCIS) made up 90.2% of integrated-systems revenue in 2022. The same guide reported that integrated reference architectures (IRAs) made up 90.0% of integrated-systems revenue in 2023.
Those are shares of integrated-systems revenue for two different segments and years. They are not HCI’s share of all data-center infrastructure spending, nor do they establish that HCI is the best design for every organization. Gartner also said both segments were affected by Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware and related market disruption.
Why can consolidation create a new problem?
With separate infrastructure components, an organization can make some decisions independently—for example, changing a storage platform without changing its hypervisor. An integrated platform can simplify administration, but its components, support terms and upgrade paths may be more closely linked. The degree of dependency is product-specific, so “HCI” alone does not tell a buyer how portable or flexible a deployment will be.
Nutanix’s vendor-published FAQ identifies several possible limitations that depend on the platform:

- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
- Resource coupling: Some designs may require use of the original vendor’s resources, and compute and storage capacity may not be independently expandable in the increments a workload needs.
- Cloud and data-center integration: The ability to integrate or share resources across environments can be uneven; moving or managing data across them may involve constraints.
- Resilience cost: High-availability redundancy may be an added expense rather than an included capability.
These are risks to check, not properties of every HCI product. Gartner likewise emphasizes that vendors differ in purchasing options, discounting and use-case focus, including distributed hybrid infrastructure and private-cloud deployments.
Why is HCI part of the virtualization decision now?
In its December 11, 2024 outlook for infrastructure and operations trends in 2025, Gartner said recent license changes for certain vendor-based solutions had led teams to reevaluate virtualization choices. Some were considering public cloud, distributed cloud and private cloud. Gartner Vice President Analyst Jeffrey Hewitt advised leaders to inventory current virtualization implementations and their interdependencies, then evaluate alternatives such as hypervisors, hyperconvergence, distributed cloud, containerization, private cloud and devirtualization.
That is guidance from Gartner’s 2025 trend outlook, not a claim that every organization should leave its current platform or move to HCI. A licensing change is a reason to understand the estate and compare viable paths—not a migration plan by itself.
Where is HCI used?
Nutanix lists data-center management, test and development, data analytics, backup and disaster recovery, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and remote or branch offices among HCI use cases. The vendor says VDI and remote/branch deployments were early use cases. These examples show where organizations have applied HCI; they do not prove that it is the right architecture for every workload in those categories.

Gartner’s 2024 integrated-systems guide identifies AI and edge computing as growth opportunities and notes that new entrants are integrating server, storage and networking hardware more deeply with hypervisor and operating software. Those are market directions, not evidence that HCI is automatically a better fit for AI or edge workloads.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you decide whether HCI is worth it?
Compare HCI with a separate compute, storage and network architecture, as well as other integrated systems. Evaluate the workload and the whole operating lifecycle rather than relying on a general claim that consolidation is simpler.
| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Workload and resource balance | Do compute and storage demand grow together, or does one outpace the other? Can the platform scale each resource in useful increments? |
| Hardware and expansion | Which server and node configurations are supported? Which vendors can you choose, and can capacity be expanded in the increments you need? |
| Management scope | Does the platform manage networking as well as compute and storage? Which operational tools remain separate? |
| Cloud and edge fit | Which environments can be managed consistently? What constraints affect data movement or shared resources across locations? |
| Resilience | What redundancy and failure-domain design is included? What high-availability capabilities or capacity requirements cost extra? |
| Licensing and lifecycle | How do subscription, renewal, upgrade and support terms affect total cost over the intended lifecycle? |
| Skills, migration and exit | What dependencies connect the hypervisor, storage, backup and management layers? What would it take to move workloads or data later? |
Include the work of migration and ongoing operations in the comparison, not just the initial purchase. The available Gartner and vendor material does not establish a universal HCI cost saving; the outcome depends on the specific platform, design, workload and commercial terms.
What should replace VMware?
There is no single replacement that follows from the fact that an organization uses VMware. Start by inventorying every virtualization implementation and related dependency: workloads, storage, backup, management, hardware, licensing and operational skills. Then compare plausible paths against application requirements, cost, resilience, cloud strategy and exit needs.
- Document the current estate. Record workloads, dependencies, capacity patterns, support obligations and renewal dates.
- Define the constraints. Identify availability, performance, compliance, location and recovery requirements that any alternative must meet.
- Compare alternatives. Consider another hypervisor, HCI, distributed or public cloud, private cloud, containerization, or devirtualization where appropriate. These options are not interchangeable; match each to the workload and operating model.
- Model lifecycle and migration. Compare licensing and support over the relevant term, along with the effort and risk of moving applications, data and operational processes.
- Validate before committing. Confirm compatibility, required skills, failure behavior and expansion options for the actual configuration under consideration.
HCI belongs in that comparison when its integrated management and operating model fit the workloads. It should not be treated as the automatic answer to a virtualization licensing change.
