The Hyper-V “RPC server unavailable” message is a connection symptom, not a diagnosis. The problem may be name resolution or host reachability, a stopped management service, a blocked RPC firewall path, or a later management-layer issue. Work through those checks in order, starting with the least disruptive; no single fix applies to every Windows and Hyper-V version or network setup.
First, identify where the connection fails
Record the exact error text and any code, the host name you entered, and what you were doing when the error appeared. For example, did Hyper-V Manager fail while adding a remote host, or did a particular management operation fail after connecting? Note whether the client is the Hyper-V host itself or a separate computer, and whether the host is standalone or part of a managed or clustered environment. These details affect which checks apply.

Confirm that the host name resolves to the intended machine and that the client can reach it on the network. A successful ping, if permitted, does not prove that RPC is working: RPC also depends on its service and firewall path. Microsoft explains that RPC errors can have several causes, so the message alone cannot identify the failed component (Microsoft’s RPC troubleshooting guidance).

Check management services on the Hyper-V host
On the intended host, confirm that Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management (VMMS) is running. Also inspect the state of Remote Procedure Call (RPC), RPC Endpoint Mapper, DCOM Server Process Launcher, and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), where applicable. These are checks suggested by a Hyper-V-specific troubleshooting article, not a universal service prescription for every Windows release; verify expected service behavior for the host’s installed version (TheWindowsClub’s Hyper-V error checklist).

Do not force-stop core RPC services as a routine fix. If a relevant service is stopped or failing, record its state and any associated error before taking version-specific corrective action.
Check both parts of the RPC firewall path
In Microsoft’s documented RPC flow, a client first contacts the endpoint mapper on TCP port 135. The endpoint mapper then directs the client to a dynamically assigned port for the requested RPC service. Consequently, a successful connection to port 135 does not establish that the later RPC call can get through. The host firewall, client-side policy, or an intervening network firewall may block the dynamic-port connection (Microsoft’s RPC troubleshooting guidance).

Check the effective firewall policy on both computers and any network firewall between them. Look for the rules needed for Hyper-V management on the relevant Windows versions and network profile; do not open all ports or disable the firewall as a test. A separate Microsoft article documents TCP 135 and TCP 49152–65535 for a particular Active Directory domain-controller scenario. That range is not established as a universal Hyper-V firewall rule (Microsoft’s 0x6ba domain-join guidance).

If service and policy checks do not explain the failure, test the RPC path rather than guessing at firewall changes. Microsoft documents PortQry as a way to query the endpoint mapper and identify a dynamic port. A network trace can then show whether the endpoint mapper responded and whether the client reached the assigned port (Microsoft’s RPC troubleshooting guidance).

When possible, capture traffic on both the client and host while reproducing the error. If the endpoint-mapper request receives no response, investigate reachability, filtering, and the target service. If the mapper responds but the connection to its assigned port fails, examine firewall policy or a network device filtering that traffic. Use the trace to narrow the fault before changing rules.
Escalate only after collecting version-specific evidence
A Hyper-V-specific secondary checklist also mentions checking Hyper-V and WMI firewall groups, verifying the WMI repository with winmgmt /verifyrepository, salvaging it if it is inconsistent, rebuilding performance counters, and reinstalling the Hyper-V feature. These are not interchangeable first steps or validated universal remedies. Do not salvage or rebuild system components, or remove and reinstall Hyper-V, solely because an RPC error appeared.

Before considering a repair, collect the Windows build and Hyper-V version, whether the connection is local or remote, the exact error and operation, service states, and relevant logs or trace results. Consult guidance that matches that environment and preserve configuration before making a disruptive change. Microsoft’s official guidance cited here covers general RPC mechanics and a separate domain-join scenario; it does not establish a single Hyper-V-specific repair procedure.
How to interpret error 1722
Error 1722 is another common rendering of “RPC server unavailable.” Microsoft maps code 0x6ba to decimal 1722 and the symbolic name RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE in its Active Directory domain-join scenario. That mapping explains the alternate code wording, but the cited scenario does not make 1722 a diagnosis of a Hyper-V-specific fault (Microsoft’s 0x6ba guidance).
