Hylki is a free, open-source email client for Linux designed around GNOME. Built with Rust, GTK 4, and libadwaita, it supports multiple accounts and documents IMAP, POP3, and JMAP, alongside features such as a combined inbox, search, filters, scheduled sending, and OpenPGP. It was previously called Vireo; the project says the Hylki name begins with version 1.35.0.
What is Hylki?
Hylki is a desktop email application maintained by Hyprlab. Its GNOME-oriented interface uses GTK 4 and libadwaita, and the project describes the application as written in Rust. It is free and open-source software; the project manifesto says Hylki is committed to remaining free and open source under the AGPLv3 license.

The project’s documented features make Hylki a candidate for people who want a Linux desktop mail app with multiple-account handling and GNOME integration. They do not establish that it is universally better or faster than other mail clients: the project sources do not provide an independent, like-for-like comparison.
What can Hylki do?
Manage multiple accounts and mailboxes
Hylki documents support for IMAP, POP3, and JMAP, background synchronization across multiple accounts, and a combined inbox. It also supports IMAP IDLE, which can allow a server to notify the client about new mail rather than waiting for periodic checks. Exact availability and setup depend on the mail provider and account configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Welcome Gnomes See No Evil Hear No Evil Speak No Evil with mushroom design.
- Welcome Gnomes See No Evil Hear No Evil Speak No Evil gift for the garden gnome lover or gift to celebrate Spring..
- Lightweight, form-fitting laptop sleeve that protects your laptop from daily wear and tear
- Faux fur-lined interior and padded zipper binding prevent scratches while keeping your device secure with a top-loading zippered enclosure and two sliders
- Designed for on-the-go use with a slim profile that easily slides into backpacks, totes, and carry-on bags
The project says actions such as deleting, moving, or flagging messages in another mail client can synchronize with Hylki. Its search feature indexes mailboxes for searching. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee of identical behavior across every provider or server.
Write and organize messages
Hylki supports rich-text, Markdown, HTML, and plain-text composition. Its organization tools include filters and tags; tags can be stored on the server as keywords where the server supports them. Scheduled sending is documented, and an Outbox can retry messages after connection failures.
Use encryption and attachment links
The application documents OpenPGP support through GnuPG installed on the computer. For large attachments, it can upload files to a user’s Nextcloud, ownCloud, OpenCloud, Seafile, OneDrive, or Dropbox account and insert a share link. The project describes options such as link expiry and password protection. This is an optional workflow: the documentation does not establish that any paid storage plan is required.
Does Hylki support Gmail or Outlook?
The project documents OAuth sign-in for Google and Microsoft accounts, as well as GNOME Online Accounts integration. It also lists the IMAP, POP3, and JMAP protocols. This indicates documented pathways for common account types, but it is not a promise that every Google or Microsoft account configuration will work without additional setup. Provider policies and account settings can change, so check Hylki’s current account setup guidance before migrating or relying on a particular sign-in method.

What does Hylki say about privacy?
Hylki’s project documentation says remote content is blocked by default, credentials are stored in the operating system’s keyring, and decrypted mail is not written to the cache. These are project statements about design; they are not an independent security audit or a blanket guarantee about privacy across providers, devices, or account settings. OpenPGP is an available feature, but using it requires GnuPG on the computer and appropriate keys and message handling.
How do you install Hylki on Linux?
The project recommends Flatpak and also lists RPM packages for Fedora. Its website documents Flatpak builds for x86_64 and aarch64 systems. Hylki requires a system Secret Service keyring for credential persistence; GNOME Online Accounts and Contacts integrations depend on the relevant desktop components. Because package availability and requirements can change, confirm supported options on the official Hylki website or the project repository before installing.
For an existing Vireo installation, the project says Hylki can migrate accounts, settings, and cached mail. Its rename note identifies version 1.35.0 as the point at which the project changed its name from Vireo to Hylki. Consult the current project instructions for migration details and version-specific steps.

Is Hylki a good fit for a GNOME desktop?
Hylki is most relevant if you want an open-source Linux mail client with a GNOME-oriented interface, multiple accounts, and the workflow features described above. Its GNOME Online Accounts and Contacts integrations may be useful in a GNOME setup. If your mail provider has unusual authentication requirements, or you depend on a particular feature that is not documented, verify compatibility with that provider before switching. The available project sources do not establish independent performance rankings against other email clients.
