Secure hybrid work by making access depend on verified identity and device condition—not whether someone is on the office network, at home, or elsewhere. Combine strong sign-in controls, maintained devices and browsers, managed web protections, careful extension policies, and a simple way to report suspicious activity. No single browser, VPN, or security product covers every browsing threat.
Why hybrid work changes the browsing threat model
Employees may reach work services from home, the office, or other locations, using different networks, devices, browsers, and cloud applications. That variety expands the paths to work accounts and data; it does not mean every home network is compromised. The practical assumption is that location alone cannot establish that a user or device is safe.

NIST’s SP 800-46 Rev. 2 recommends securing organization-issued and personally owned telework devices against threats identified through an organization’s threat model. Microsoft’s guidance for secure remote and hybrid work describes Zero Trust as verifying identity and device rather than presuming either is secure on any network.

Require multifactor authentication for workforce accounts and use access policies that consider device condition and other conditions defined by the organization. Where available, device health and patch status can inform whether access is allowed. Microsoft describes this approach through Conditional Access and device compliance in its hybrid-work guidance and Conditional Access grant controls.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Where the identity provider and employee devices support it, consider phishing-resistant sign-in methods such as passkeys or a FIDO2 security key. Confirm compatibility before rollout. A security key strengthens authentication; it does not block malicious websites or replace endpoint and browser protections. Microsoft reports that 92% of its employee productivity accounts were protected by phishing-resistant authentication methods; the cited guidance does not state a year, and this is Microsoft’s own initiative—not an industry-wide result. See Microsoft’s account of its passwordless authentication initiative.
Keep devices, browsers, and web protections current
Enable automatic updates where appropriate, and assign responsibility for applying security updates to work computers and mobile devices. NIST’s Telework Security Basics advises keeping telework devices patched and updated. A workable policy also needs an exception and recovery process for devices that cannot update promptly.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Web-threat blocking can add a layer against phishing, malware, exploit, and low-reputation sites, but coverage depends on the product, operating system, browser, plan, and configuration. For example, Microsoft documents such protections in its endpoint product, with prerequisites and behavior that vary by platform and setup. Its Network protection documentation also distinguishes audit-only mode from blocking: audit-only records activity but does not block sites. Treat this as one example of a capability, not a universal product recommendation.
For any proposed endpoint or browser control, verify which browsers and operating systems it covers, whether it blocks or only logs threats, how it integrates with device compliance and identity policies, and what deployment and support work it creates. Account for user friction, privacy impact, and existing licensing before expanding it.

Govern browser extensions as software
Extensions can request access to browsing data or to sites an employee visits. Ask employees to install only extensions needed for work, review their stated purpose and requested permissions, check their privacy practices, remove unused extensions, and restrict site access when the browser allows it.
For managed Chrome environments, administrators can evaluate extensions and use policy controls to allow or block them. Google’s Chrome Enterprise extension management guidance describes those controls. Its extension safety guidance recommends comparing purpose with permissions, reviewing privacy practices, removing unused extensions, and limiting the sites on which an extension may operate. These are Chrome-specific instructions; other browsers may offer different controls. Google reported that less than 1% of Chrome Web Store installs were found to include malware in 2024. That figure concerns Chrome Web Store installs, not every extension source or the overall risk of browser extensions.

Make suspicious browsing requests easy to report
Tell employees to pause and independently verify unexpected requests to visit a supplied site, disclose a password, open an attachment, scan a computer, or join an unusual web meeting. They should use a known contact method—such as a trusted phone number or the organization’s official help desk channel—not contact details included in the suspicious message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNIST’s Telework Security Basics advises asking questions and verifying unusual requests by phone or other means before proceeding. Make the reporting route visible and straightforward: employees should send suspicious messages or describe concerning browser behavior to the help desk or security team. They should not try to investigate suspected malware themselves.

Roll out controls in stages
- Inventory the environment. List identity providers, work applications, browsers, managed endpoints, and BYOD constraints. Identify which devices and services each policy must cover.
- Choose controls against operational needs. Compare browser and operating-system coverage, threat blocking versus logging, extension governance, device-compliance integration, support burden, user friction, privacy impact, and existing licensing.
- Pilot with a small group. Test sign-in and device policies, browser protections, and extension rules with representative users. Check for blocked legitimate work, uncovered devices, and support issues.
- Communicate changes and expand gradually. Explain what employees will see, how to get help, and how to report false positives. Broaden policy scope as the organization validates security and operational impact, then monitor outcomes and adjust.
Microsoft recommends evaluating and piloting policy changes before incrementally expanding their scope in its hybrid-work guidance. This staged approach helps surface compatibility and workflow problems before they affect the full workforce.
