For a ready-to-use desktop globe, start with Marble; for mapping and spatial analysis, choose QGIS; and for Earth-science data, look at GeoMapApp. The other entries serve different roles: some are developer toolkits, and one is a web application for publishing data explorers. These are useful free and open-source alternatives to consider alongside Google Earth, but they are not eight interchangeable globe apps.
How these eight options differ
A virtual globe is a three-dimensional representation of Earth or another world. In this list, however, “virtual globe” covers several kinds of software: finished desktop applications, GIS workbenches, scientific data viewers, developer SDKs, and a web application. Decide what you need to do before choosing a name from the list. The roundup grouping these tools was published August 29, 2026, and itself cautions that they do not all share Google Earth’s feature set (LinuxLinks roundup).

| Tool | Best fit | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Marble | Desktop globe and atlas browsing | A desktop atlas and virtual globe |
| QGIS | Creating, editing, and analyzing maps | A full GIS application, not primarily a globe browser |
| OpenStreetMap | Open map data and collaborative mapping | A mapping project and data resource, not a standalone globe application established by the roundup |
| GeoMapApp | Marine and Earth-science exploration | A scientific data application |
| osgEarth | Building 3D geospatial applications | A C++ SDK |
| NASA WorldWind | Adding a globe or map to software | Geographic rendering SDKs and engines |
| TerriaMap | Publishing an interactive geospatial data portal | A web application built with TerriaJS |
| ossimPlanet | Viewing and processing 3D geospatial data | A 3D geospatial viewer |
Which tool should you choose?
- For a desktop globe and atlas: Choose Marble.
- For general GIS work: Choose QGIS if you need to edit, combine, export, or analyze spatial data.
- For ocean and Earth-science datasets: Choose GeoMapApp.
- For your own 3D mapping software: Consider osgEarth or WorldWind; both are developer-oriented, not drop-in personal globe apps.
- For an interactive public data portal: Consider TerriaMap.
- For open map data: Explore OpenStreetMap, but do not mistake the project and its data for a dedicated virtual-globe client.
- For a 3D geospatial viewer: Investigate ossimPlanet, while checking the project’s current maintenance and availability.
Desktop globes and GIS applications
Marble: the closest fit for a personal globe
Marble is a KDE Education Project atlas and virtual globe. Its documented features include 3D globe navigation, different maps and planetary bodies, distance measurement, 2D projected map views, and OpenStreetMap integration. The OSGeo profile lists Linux, macOS, and Windows support and an LGPL 2.1 license (OSGeo project profile).
Recommended Free Tools
The OSGeo profile lists version 1.3.4; that profile detail should not be read as confirmation of the latest release. Check KDE’s current project information before installing or relying on a particular version.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
QGIS: choose analysis over globe browsing
QGIS is a general-purpose GIS for working with vector, raster, and database data. Its described capabilities include map creation and exploration, editing and exporting data, GPS tools, and spatial analysis. That breadth makes it a stronger fit than a simple globe when the job is to produce or analyze maps, but it is a different kind of tool from a dedicated desktop atlas. The cited profile lists GNU GPL v2.0 and dates from September 2023, so consult current QGIS project information for release and licensing details (LinuxLinks QGIS profile).
OpenStreetMap: a data project, not a globe app
OpenStreetMap is included in the roundup, but the evidence for this entry identifies the mapping project and its data rather than a particular standalone virtual-globe application. Treat it as an open mapping resource, not as a direct desktop-app substitute for Google Earth (LinuxLinks roundup).

Tools for scientific data and geospatial viewing
GeoMapApp: marine and Earth-science exploration
GeoMapApp is oriented toward Earth-science research and access to marine and geoscience datasets maintained through Columbia University’s Marine Geoscience Data System. The described content includes bathymetry and topography, geology, geochemistry, paleoclimate, ocean datasets, and research cruise data. It retrieves content over the internet, so it is not the best choice when offline access is essential (LinuxLinks GeoMapApp profile).
The profile describes high-resolution multibeam bathymetry in ocean areas with approximately 100 m node spacing. That figure applies to the profile’s described bathymetry context; it is not a resolution guarantee for all datasets or layers.

NASA WorldWind: a rendering engine, not an end-user globe
NASA’s documentation makes the distinction explicit: “WorldWind is different from a 3D globe like Google Earth because it is not an application.” The Java version is an SDK and geographic rendering engine. NASA’s feature page describes Java/OpenGL, imagery and terrain layers, GIS service connections, shapes, measurement, and line-of-sight tools, with support listed for Windows, macOS, and Linux (NASA WorldWind Java features).

Web WorldWind provides a JavaScript API for embedding a 3D globe or 2D map in a web page or application (NASA Web WorldWind). NASA’s overview records project milestones: work began in 2002, the project was ported to Java in 2006, and Web WorldWind 0.9.0 was released under Apache 2.0 in 2018. Those are historical facts, not confirmation of current release status (NASA WorldWind overview).
TerriaMap: publish a geospatial data explorer
TerriaMap is a complete web application for building and deploying geospatial data explorers using TerriaJS. Its documented features include a Cesium-powered 3D globe, a 2D Leaflet fallback, searchable data catalogs, combined layers, time-dependent data, and support for common geospatial formats and services. The profile lists an Apache 2.0 license (LinuxLinks TerriaMap profile).
TerriaMap suits an organization that wants to publish an interactive data portal. It is not simply a personal globe application to install and open.
Quick Recap
What to check before adopting one
- Application or toolkit: Marble is the clearest finished desktop globe here. QGIS is a GIS workbench; osgEarth and WorldWind are developer frameworks; TerriaMap is a web application for publishing data.
- Data and connectivity: Identify whether you need local files, online layers, imagery, terrain, or specialized scientific datasets. GeoMapApp retrieves its content online; osgEarth supports local and online sources; WorldWind supports GIS services; TerriaMap is designed around geospatial files, services, and catalogs.
- Platform: Check the current download and operating-system support for your chosen version. Marble’s profile lists Linux, macOS, and Windows, as does the osgEarth profile; NASA’s Java feature page lists the same platforms for WorldWind.
- License and project status: The cited profiles list LGPL 2.1 for Marble, GNU GPL v2.0 for QGIS, MIT for osgEarth and ossimPlanet, and Apache 2.0 for TerriaMap. NASA documents Web WorldWind’s Apache 2.0 release as a 2018 milestone. These references do not establish that each detail is current; verify the license and maintenance status in the project’s present documentation before using software in a new deployment.
