Hybrid cloud storage can help a website scale when a specific requirement justifies keeping some application or data components in a private cloud, on premises, or at the edge while using public-cloud services for others. It is an architecture choice, not a storage product—and it adds networking, security, synchronization, and operating work. For a simple static site, managed object storage plus a content delivery network (CDN) may be enough; hybrid placement is more compelling when latency to local systems, data controls, migration, disaster recovery, or peak capacity calls for it.

What “hybrid cloud storage” means for a website

A hybrid design places application components or data across environments: public cloud, private cloud, on-premises infrastructure, or edge locations. A website might serve its frontend from a public cloud while a backend or dataset remains in a controlled on-premises environment. In another design, local applications access cloud-held files through a gateway that presents a familiar file interface.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The term does not identify one storage type. A web workload may use object storage for static assets, a database for application records, persistent block storage for a virtual machine, or file storage for shared files. Choose the storage interface to match how the application reads and writes data; placing unlike workloads behind one storage pattern can create unnecessary latency or operational friction.

When hybrid placement makes sense

Keep a component local or split it across environments only when a concrete requirement outweighs the added complexity. AWS identifies local latency, local data processing, high transfer costs, and regulatory compliance as reasons some applications may remain on premises; it also notes that some applications need re-architecture before migration. A gradual move, recovery replica, or temporary capacity extension may also support a hybrid design.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
  • Local latency or processing: A workload may need nearby access to systems or data that remain on premises.
  • Regulatory or control requirements: A backend or dataset may need to stay within a controlled environment.
  • Migration in stages: A gateway can let local clients use cloud-backed storage while an existing file tier remains part of the design.
  • Recovery or peak demand: Cloud resources may support a recovery environment or handle overflow, provided data, routing, and application behavior are planned for it.

Hybrid is not automatically cheaper or more resilient. Google Cloud’s hybrid deployment guidance, last reviewed 2026-09-09 UTC, says hybrid topology takes more effort to set up and operate than cloud-only architecture and requires a reliable, secure network connection. Redundant data and underused resources can also increase cost.

Match the storage pattern to the workload

Web workload or need Storage pattern described in provider guidance Design point to verify
Static site and assets Google Cloud’s hosting overview maps static website hosting to Cloud Storage; it also describes Firebase Hosting. For custom-domain HTTPS, the overview says Cloud Storage does not itself provide end-to-end HTTPS; it points to Firebase Hosting or an HTTPS load balancer. Recheck current provider documentation before implementation.
VM-based application Google lists Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Firestore, Bigtable, persistent disks, and external providers among storage options. Choose among relational, NoSQL, object, and persistent-disk needs based on the application’s access pattern, not the hosting label.
Containerized application Google’s overview describes GKE and notes its interaction with persistent disks differs from a VM workload. Container-local files are ephemeral. Persistent data needs a suitable volume or external storage service.
Existing on-premises file clients AWS describes File Gateway presenting an S3 bucket or prefix as an SMB or NFS share, with a local cache for frequently accessed data. Check file-protocol behavior, cache capacity, connectivity, and which data must be available locally.
On-premises block workloads AWS Volume Gateway provides iSCSI volumes in cached or stored mode. Cached mode keeps primary data in S3 and frequently accessed data locally; stored mode keeps the primary dataset local and backs it up asynchronously to S3.

These are provider-specific examples, not a universal product recommendation. A static site, VM, and container application can have different persistence and delivery requirements even when they share a domain name.

How hybrid file storage can bridge a NAS and cloud object storage

For applications that require SMB or NFS rather than an object-storage API, AWS describes a two-stage pattern for existing on-premises NAS or file servers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Copy the existing data: AWS DataSync transfers data from on-premises NAS or file servers to Amazon S3. The described context includes NFS, SMB, and S3 sources and destinations; transfers can use the internet or Direct Connect.
  2. Present cloud-backed files to local clients: File Gateway exposes an S3 bucket or prefix as an SMB or NFS share and keeps a local cache for frequently accessed files. AWS reports TLS for data in transit in this example.

AWS describes DataSync transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps. That is a vendor-published capability claim, not a promised migration speed; actual throughput depends on the specific source, network, configuration, and workload. AWS’s article also states that S3 is designed for 99.999999999% (11 nines) durability. That is a vendor-stated service durability figure, not an end-to-end website durability measure or a substitute for a recovery plan.

For block storage, AWS’s Volume Gateway offers two placement choices. In cached mode, the primary data is in S3 and frequently accessed data is held locally; in stored mode, the primary dataset remains local and is backed up asynchronously to S3. AWS also lists snapshots, volume clones, and AWS Backup as recovery options. Select a mode based on where the primary data must reside and how the application accesses it.

Plan the network and application boundary

A hybrid storage path depends on connectivity between environments. Measure latency and throughput across both local and cloud paths, and determine how the application behaves when the connection slows or fails. The architecture must also establish how components find one another and which environment is authoritative for each piece of data.

One documented topology puts the frontend in Google Cloud while the backend remains on premises. The cloud frontend can include load balancing, a CDN, DDoS protection, and access policies, then route requests to the local backend. This can suit a globally used application whose backend must remain in a controlled environment, but it also means backend responsiveness and availability depend on the cross-environment path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AWS describes hybrid frontend placement on premises, in AWS Regions, or split across both, with public DNS supporting active-backup or active-active routing. These modes are not interchangeable: active-backup routes to a standby after failure, while active-active serves from both sides. The application’s routing, failure behavior, and data consistency determine whether either mode is appropriate.

Use cloud bursting and disaster recovery deliberately

Cloud bursting

Cloud bursting uses cloud capacity to handle overflow when an on-premises application reaches peak demand. It is not simply a matter of adding spare compute. Before relying on it, verify that the application can run in both environments, required data is sufficiently current and reachable, traffic can be routed correctly, licensing permits the arrangement, and capacity can be provisioned quickly enough. These are workload-specific implementation checks; a pattern description alone cannot establish that a particular site is ready to burst.

Disaster recovery

A recovery design may back up on-premises application data to the cloud and maintain a cloud replica that can be activated after a planned or unplanned outage. Decide whether the replica is active or passive and how often data is backed up in light of the recovery time objective (RTO)—how quickly service must return—and the recovery point objective (RPO)—how much recent data loss is tolerable. A backup, replica, and failover procedure are distinct parts of recovery; having a copy in another environment does not by itself prove that the site can be restored within its targets.

Make stateless components easier to scale

Where the application allows it, avoid depending on files stored only on an individual web server. Google Cloud’s Well-Architected Framework, last reviewed 2026-01-28 UTC, says a stateless architecture can increase reliability and scalability. Stateless services can use shared storage or cached services rather than relying on significant local dependencies, making it easier to add or replace service instances. This does not remove the need to design persistence for databases, files, and other stateful data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate the full cost and operating burden

Compare the full design rather than just a cloud storage rate. Account for local hardware and support, cloud storage and requests, data transfer, network connectivity, gateway and cache capacity, redundant copies, and resources kept idle for recovery or peak load. Also account for people and processes needed to monitor, patch, synchronize, plan capacity, and manage access consistently across environments.

  • Data access: Identify whether clients need object APIs, SMB/NFS files, block/iSCSI volumes, or database transactions.
  • Performance: Measure latency and throughput on both local and cloud paths, including degraded-connectivity behavior.
  • Recovery: Specify backups, replication, RTO, RPO, and exactly which components fail over and how activation works.
  • Security and compliance: Define access controls, encryption, data residency, and regulatory fit for each environment and transfer path.
  • Operations and cost: Include synchronization, monitoring, patching, capacity, transfer charges, local infrastructure, and idle recovery resources.

Without a workload’s traffic profile, geography, budget, retention rules, and recovery targets, there is no responsible basis to select a provider, storage class, capacity, network service, or gateway device. Provider features, limits, availability, and prices can change, so check the relevant current documentation before implementation.
