Hunt and peck is a way of typing in which you look for each key on the keyboard and press it, usually one key at a time. The term often describes typing with one or two fingers, but the defining feature is searching for keys by sight.

What does “hunt and peck” mean?

“Hunt and peck” names a typing method: the typist visually locates a key, then strikes it. Cambridge Dictionary defines it as typing with one or two fingers while looking for each letter because the typist does not know the keys’ positions (Cambridge Dictionary).

The expression can be a noun or a verb phrase: someone might describe their method as “hunt-and-peck typing,” or say, “I hunt and peck.” Dictionaries use both the hyphenated and unhyphenated forms.

Is hunt and peck the same as two-finger typing?

Not exactly. One or two fingers—often the forefingers—is a common description, but dictionaries do not agree on an exact finger count. The more reliable distinction is how the typist finds keys: hunt-and-peck typing involves visually searching for them as you type. A person might use more fingers and still rely on that visual search.

How is it different from touch typing?

Touch typing relies on learned key positions rather than looking for each key. The distinction is about locating keys, not simply how many fingers are in use: a typist can use several fingers without touch typing, or use fewer fingers while knowing where the keys are.

Collins describes hunt-and-peck typing as the alternative to the touch system (Collins English Dictionary). In everyday use, the term can sound critical because dictionaries sometimes characterize the method as slow or inefficient. That is part of the term’s usual connotation, not a measured claim about every typist’s speed or accuracy.
