Wheeled rovers have the strongest operational basis in the lunar-mission examples covered here. Articulated wheels can steer, adjust suspension, and help a rover cope with soft soil; legged and hybrid designs may offer different ways to cross steep or very rough ground. The reviewed NASA and JPL sources do not establish a humanoid robot as a current lunar surface mission platform, and they do not provide a controlled performance comparison proving that one architecture is best everywhere.
Are humanoid robots going to the Moon?
The NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory examples discussed here do not document a humanoid robot assigned to a lunar surface mission. That is different from saying a humanoid could never be useful: a human-like body might be proposed for work involving tools or workspaces designed for astronauts, but the sources here do not demonstrate its lunar performance, reliability, cost, or mission suitability.

It is also important not to use “humanoid” as a catch-all for robots with several limbs. JPL’s ATHLETE is a six-limbed rolling-and-walking vehicle, not a humanoid. A four-legged robot is likewise a distinct architecture, and neither label should be applied to a rover simply because it can move its wheels in unusual ways.

Are four-legged robots better than rovers on the Moon?
There is no supported universal ranking. Rolling is the default mode for a wheeled rover, while legs could help a vehicle place its feet on rough or steep terrain. Whether that advantage is worth the added mechanisms and control demands depends on the route and mission task. The reviewed sources do not give comparable lunar measurements of energy use, reliability, speed, or cost for wheeled, legged, and humanoid systems.

| Architecture | What the examples establish | Potential advantage | Key limitation | Evidence maturity in these sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheeled rover | NASA’s VIPER design uses four independently steered wheel modules and active suspension; JPL’s ERNEST is an articulated four-wheel prototype. | Efficient rolling, with steering and suspension articulation to broaden maneuverability. | Loose soil and steep terrain can challenge traction and mobility; actual results depend on local conditions. | VIPER is a planned lunar mission platform in NASA’s cited status; ERNEST is a terrestrial prototype. |
| Legged or quadruped | The cited ATHLETE concept has six limbs and combines rolling with walking; it is not a four-legged robot. | Legs may help with very rough or steep terrain and can support payload handling. | The available sources do not establish better overall lunar performance than wheels. | ATHLETE is a development concept, not a demonstrated lunar operating system in these sources. |
| Humanoid | No current lunar humanoid surface mission is established by the reviewed official sources. | A possible future rationale would be compatibility with human tools or workspaces, but that requires separate evidence. | Lunar performance, cost, reliability, and mission fit are not demonstrated here. | No verified current lunar mission example is documented in these sources. |
| Hybrid wheel-leg | ATHLETE combines rolling and walking; ERNEST explores wheel-walking and articulated suspension. Neither is a humanoid. | Could combine rolling with obstacle negotiation or ways to recover from difficult terrain. | The sources do not quantify the net power use, reliability, or lifecycle cost of the added mechanisms. | Development concept and terrestrial prototype evidence. |
Which robot design works best on lunar terrain?
The answer depends on what the mission must do, not just on the robot’s outline. A route across relatively passable ground may favor rolling; a mission that must negotiate extreme slopes or obstacles may value greater articulation or walking. Payload handling can also change the choice: a vehicle expected to load, carry, manipulate, and place equipment has different requirements from one primarily tasked with driving and collecting measurements.
Useful comparison criteria include:
- Terrain and slope: assess the expected soil, obstacles, and route profile rather than assuming that one mobility type handles every surface.
- Power and thermal limits: determine whether the mobility system fits the mission’s available power and operating conditions. The cited sources do not provide consistent cross-architecture figures.
- Payload and manipulation: distinguish a science rover from a vehicle expected to transport or position equipment.
- Mechanisms and reliability: compare the benefits of steering, suspension articulation, or legs against their added mechanisms and control modes.
- Lighting, dust, and soil interaction: include the conditions the vehicle must encounter, not just its motion on a clear route.
- Control and autonomy: account for communication availability, control latency, route planning, and operator workload.
- Mission maturity and integration: separate a flight mission design or delivery plan from an R&D concept or an Earth-based test.
What does NASA’s VIPER show about wheeled lunar rovers?
NASA describes VIPER as a lunar south-pole prospecting rover designed to map water ice and other resources. Its four wheel modules combine active suspension with independent steering. NASA says VIPER can move sideways or diagonally and can lift and sweep its wheels to help in very soft soil. The design therefore illustrates that “wheeled” does not necessarily mean a vehicle with fixed, passive wheels.

NASA’s rover overview gives VIPER a stated maximum traversable incline of 15 degrees, an ordinary travel speed of about 0.45 mph (0.72 kph), and a speed of about 0.25 mph (0.4 kph) while prospecting. These are figures for the VIPER design, not a head-to-head comparison with legged or humanoid robots.

NASA’s VIPER mission page reported on September 19, 2025 that the rover and instruments would be delivered to Mons Mouton by Blue Origin’s Blue Moon MK-1 lander under task order CS-7. That announcement describes a delivery plan, not evidence that VIPER has landed or operated on the Moon.

ATHLETE: a rolling-and-walking development concept
JPL describes ATHLETE as a vehicle intended to roll over Apollo-like undulating terrain and walk across extremely rough or steep terrain. The project also considers loading, transporting, manipulating, and depositing payloads. JPL characterizes the work as focused research and development, with a target of demonstrating Technology Readiness Level 6; the project page does not establish ATHLETE as a flight-proven lunar vehicle.

ERNEST: a four-wheel prototype tested on Earth
A JPL report dated June 18, 2026 describes ERNEST as a four-foot-long prototype for refining mobility hardware and autonomy for potential future lunar and Mars missions. JPL reports that it traveled 16 miles (26 kilometers) in a desert field test with minimal intervention. The test took place on Earth, so that mileage is not a lunar traverse or proof of lunar operating performance.

JPL describes ERNEST’s active suspension and wheel gaits as including squirming, wheel-walking, and obstacle-climbing. Those features make it a useful example of articulated rover mobility, not a humanoid or a four-legged robot. JPL principal technologist Issa Nesnas said the testing was helping refine mobility hardware and autonomy for terrain and lighting conditions anticipated on the Moon; that is a statement about prototype development, not a mission commitment.
How does the crew’s mission role change the comparison?
Robot architecture should be compared against the job the mission needs done. NASA’s Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility program includes spacesuits, the Lunar Terrain Vehicle, technology development and partnerships, and pressurized crewed rover systems. NASA describes the unpressurized Lunar Terrain Vehicle as transporting suited crew and equipment, while a pressurized rover would let astronauts live and work inside a mobile laboratory. These crewed vehicles are not robots, but they show why mission role matters more than shape alone.
