Humanoid robots are being developed for more flexible jobs in spaces designed for people, including reported pilot projects in which a robot must move between work areas. The practical choice is therefore about the task and operating environment—not whether a machine looks human.
Conventional industrial robots remain the established technology for repeatable processes. Humanoids are a developing complement whose mass adoption, performance and deployment scale are still uncertain.

What counts as an industrial robot?
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) uses an ISO-based definition: an industrial robot is an “automatically controlled, reprogrammable multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes.” The definition describes what the machine can control and how it can be programmed; it does not require a particular body shape. A robot can therefore be industrial without resembling a person.

In practice, industrial robots are installed as part of a production system. Their position, tooling, sensors, guarding, software and material flow are engineered around a known process. Once the cell is commissioned, the robot repeats programmed motions with predictable timing and accuracy. See the IFR’s definitions at Topics and Definitions: Industrial Robots and Service Robots.

The typical industrial-robot operating model
- A work area is arranged around the robot and its end effector.
- Parts arrive in known locations or through controlled feeding equipment.
- The sequence, speed, force and quality checks are specified in advance.
- Safety systems—such as guarding, interlocks, scanners or monitored stops—are designed for that cell.
- Changing the product or process may require new tooling, programming, fixtures or validation.
This model is valuable when the job is repeatable and the cost of redesigning a cell is justified by sustained production.
What makes a humanoid robot different?
The IFR’s 2025 position paper describes humanoids as general-purpose robots based on human motion mechanics. Their proposed advantage is compatibility with human-designed environments: doors, aisles, shelves, tools and workstations that already assume a person can move, reach and manipulate objects there.
That is an intended design proposition, not a universal performance result. The same paper says it is uncertain when mass adoption will occur and expects humanoids to complement and expand existing robot technologies rather than replace the types of robots already on the market. The IFR summarizes the position in the statement: “If and when a mass adoption of humanoids will take place remains uncertain. In any case, humanoids are not expected to replace the types of robots currently on the market in the future. Instead, they will complement and expand upon existing technology.” The source is IFR’s “Humanoid Robots: ‘Vision and Reality’ Paper Published by IFR”.
What a humanoid form may help with
- Entering work areas built for people without rebuilding every aisle or station.
- Reaching and manipulating objects placed at human-oriented heights and positions.
- Moving between stations when one fixed robot cell cannot cover the whole route.
- Adapting, in principle, to a broader range of tasks than a single-purpose cell.
These are reasons companies are investigating the form. They do not establish that a humanoid will be faster, safer, cheaper or more precise than a purpose-built industrial robot on a particular operation.
The task difference in one view
| Decision factor | Industrial robot | Humanoid robot |
|---|---|---|
| Best-established role | Defined production processes in a dedicated cell | Flexible work in environments arranged for people; still developing |
| Movement pattern | Usually fixed to a base or a tightly controlled axis system | Being developed for movement between work areas as well as manipulation |
| Task variation | Works best when parts, poses and sequences are specified | Intended to handle more variation, but capability depends on the specific system and application |
| Workspace | Often modified for automation with fixtures, guarding and controlled presentation | Designed around the possibility of using existing human-oriented spaces |
| Evidence maturity | Established deployments and operating fleets worldwide | Reported pilots and development programs; no comparable global installation count is established in the cited sources |
| Replacement claim | Current production equipment | Expected to complement, not universally replace, current robot types |
Tasks industrial robots are built for
Repeatable processing in a fixed cell
When a process can be described as a stable sequence—present a part, perform the motion, check the result and pass the part onward—an industrial robot is usually the natural fit. The robot can be programmed for three or more axes, equipped with a task-specific tool and integrated with the line’s controls.

Example: robotic grinding for energy-storage components
An IFR case study describes an Estun system for grinding weld marks, joints and seams on battery trays, doors, frames and related energy-storage components. The system combines robot arms, adaptive force-control grinding tools, 3D laser scanning and process-control software. Those elements address a defined finishing operation: the robot follows a controlled path, applies force while the tool responds to surface variation, and uses scanning and software to manage the process.
This is a company case study reported by IFR, not an independent controlled comparison with humanoids. It nevertheless illustrates the established industrial-robot pattern: dedicated equipment is engineered around a known operation. The case is documented at Breakthrough Robotic Grinding in Energy Storage Manufacturing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Predictable cycle: A fixed pose and programmed trajectory make timing easier to specify.
- Task-specific tooling: The end effector can be optimized for grinding, welding, handling or another defined operation.
- Controlled sensing: Cameras, force sensors, scanners and quality software can be selected for the process rather than for general-purpose use.
- Engineered safety: Guarding and interlocks can be designed around a known envelope and motion pattern.
- Repeatability: Once validated, the same recipe can run through large production volumes with limited variation.
These advantages do not mean every industrial robot is stationary or inflexible. Industrial systems can include external axes, tracks, conveyors and mobile bases. The relevant question is whether the complete system has been engineered for the required route and process.
Tasks humanoid robots are being tested for
Pick-and-place that requires relocation
The Association for Advancing Automation (A3) reported in its 2025 white paper that automotive original-equipment manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers are piloting humanoids for pick-and-place tasks that require frequent robot relocation. In this context, the proposed value is not simply picking an object; it is picking in several work areas without installing a separate fixed robot at each location.
A reported pilot is evidence that a company is testing an application, not proof of broad production adoption. A3 does not quantify the pilots or publish performance data that would support a universal comparison of speed, uptime, quality or cost. The white paper is available at AI in Automation: The Intelligent Transformation of Industry Today and Beyond.

Work in human-designed spaces
Factories, warehouses and service areas often contain stairs, shelving, carts, tools and stations originally arranged for people. A humanoid could, in principle, use those spaces without every item being relocated to a purpose-built robot cell. This may matter where the product mix changes frequently or where the expense and disruption of rebuilding a line would outweigh the benefit of a fixed installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe proposition has limits. A human-shaped body does not automatically provide human-level balance, dexterity, perception, endurance or safety. Each deployment still needs validated navigation, manipulation, charging or battery management, supervision and safeguards for people nearby.
General-purpose flexibility is an aspiration, not a specification
“General-purpose” describes the intended range of applications, not a guarantee that one machine can perform any task. A humanoid configured for box handling may need different grippers, software, sensors and safety measures for another operation. Buyers should evaluate the specific robot, tool and tested workflow rather than infer capability from the word “humanoid.”
Do not confuse mobile logistics robots with humanoids
IFR reported that transportation and logistics was the largest professional service-robot application class by units sold in 2024. The category recorded 102,900 units, up 14 percent, and mainly covers mobile robots that transport and handle goods. These figures describe professional service robots as a reporting category; they are not a count of humanoid robots.
The service-robot data came from a sample of 294 suppliers. IFR warns that sample composition varies between report years, so the figures should not be compared as if they were a complete census or a perfectly consistent time series. A mobile warehouse robot may be the right solution for transport even when a humanoid is being evaluated for manipulation. Appearance is not a substitute for application classification.

Six questions for choosing between approaches
1. Is the task stable and specified?
Document the part presentation, poses, tolerances, sequence, cycle-time target and quality test. A stable grinding, welding, assembly or handling recipe points toward an industrial cell. Frequent changes in parts, locations or instructions strengthen the case for investigating a flexible platform, provided the system has demonstrated those changes in practice.
2. Must the robot relocate?
Determine whether one machine can remain productive in a dedicated cell. If the job moves among stations and installing multiple fixed systems would leave equipment idle, mobility may have operational value. The A3 automotive examples are pilots in this category; they do not establish that relocation is solved for every factory layout.
3. Who designed the workspace?
Measure aisles, shelves, reach heights, floor transitions, handoff points and access rules. A purpose-built cell favors conventional industrial equipment. A human-oriented workspace may make a humanoid trial attractive, but only if the robot can reliably navigate and interact with the actual obstacles and tools.
4. How often will the product or task change?
List changeovers per shift, new part introductions, tooling changes and software updates. A fixed robot can still support variation through recipes and quick-change tooling, while a humanoid may still require application-specific programming and hardware. Compare the complete changeover process, not the marketing category.
5. What integration and safety work is required?
Account for tooling, fixtures, conveyors, sensors, guarding, emergency stops, speed limits, human-robot access, network controls, maintenance and operator training. A mobile or humanoid system may require additional navigation and interaction safeguards; a fixed cell may require more physical infrastructure. The safer choice is the one whose hazards can be identified, mitigated and validated for the real workflow.
Best Value
6. What evidence supports the claim?
Classify each proposal as an established deployment, a documented customer case, a reported pilot or a future concept. Ask for the operating conditions, uptime, quality results, intervention rate, cycle time and scope of the test. Do not treat a demonstration or a pilot announcement as equivalent to a mature production fleet.
Scale of the established industrial-robot market
IFR’s World Robotics 2025 report on industrial robots provides a useful baseline for the technology already operating in factories:
| Measure | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| New industrial robots installed worldwide | 542,000 in 2024 | IFR, published in 2025 |
| Industrial robots in operational use worldwide | 4,664,000 in 2024 | Up 9% from 2023; IFR, published in 2025 |
| Share of new deployments in Asia | 74% in 2024 | IFR regional share |
| Share of new deployments in Europe | 16% in 2024 | IFR regional share |
| Share of new deployments in the Americas | 9% in 2024 | IFR regional share |
The cited sources do not provide a comparable global number for humanoid installations, deployed fleets or industrial pilot counts. Any precise humanoid total would therefore go beyond the available evidence.
What the numbers mean for a buyer
The industrial-robot figures show a large installed base, established integration practices and years of production experience. They do not prove that a conventional robot is best for every new task. Conversely, the absence of a comparable humanoid fleet count does not prove that pilots lack value; it means their scale and maturity cannot be represented by the same global statistic.
Use the numbers as context, then return to the operation. A mature industrial cell may be the lowest-risk answer for a stable, high-volume process. A humanoid trial may be worth evaluating when relocation, human-oriented infrastructure or changing tasks creates a limitation that fixed automation cannot economically address.
Common mistakes when comparing the two
- Comparing silhouettes instead of workflows: A human-like appearance says little about cycle time, reach, payload, precision or safety certification.
- Calling a pilot a deployment: A reported test does not establish production reliability across shifts, products or sites.
- Assuming flexibility is free: A flexible robot still needs application software, tools, sensors, maintenance and operator procedures.
- Using service-robot totals as humanoid totals: IFR’s transportation and logistics category is mainly mobile goods-handling robots.
- Expecting replacement: Current evidence and the IFR position favor complementary roles rather than a universal swap from industrial robots to humanoids.
- Ignoring the cell around the robot: Fixtures, material presentation, guarding and quality inspection often determine performance as much as the arm or body itself.
Bottom line: choose the task, not the shape
Industrial robots are built for defined, repeatable production processes where a company can engineer the workspace and validate a dedicated cell. Humanoid robots are being developed for flexible work in human-designed environments, with relocation-dependent pick-and-place among the reported pilot applications. That makes humanoids a potential complement when fixed automation is constrained by changing tasks or work areas—not an established replacement for conventional industrial equipment.
