A human-readable crypto address is a name or formatted identifier that compatible software can interpret as a blockchain destination. It can be easier to recognize than a long hexadecimal address, but it is not automatically proof of who controls the destination. Before sending, verify the network and the address your wallet resolves or displays.
What does “human-readable crypto address” mean?
The phrase covers two related but distinct things: a memorable name that software looks up, and a formatted address that makes network information explicit. Neither should be confused with a blockchain address merely shortened for display.

A name that resolves to an address
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed naming system. A name such as alice.eth can have records that point to cryptocurrency addresses. Compatible software looks up the relevant record and uses the result as the destination. ENS describes resolution as converting a human-readable name to a machine-readable address. A chain-specific formatted address
ERC-7828 describes an interoperable name format that combines an address with a chain identifier and an optional checksum. The target may be a raw address or an ENS name. Including a chain identifier makes network context explicit in the formatted identifier; an ENS name instead depends on resolving the appropriate record. ERC-7828: Interoperable Names.
How does ENS resolution work?
Forward lookup: name to address
When a compatible app accepts an ENS name, it can query the relevant resolver and retrieve the address record for the requested cryptocurrency or chain. A single name may have records for more than one chain, so the result depends on which record the app requests and what has been configured. ENS address lookup.

Reverse lookup: address to name
Reverse resolution associates an address with a readable name, allowing an app to display a name for an address. ENS also supports a primary name that apps can use for display. A displayed name is a helpful label, but it should not be treated as independent verification of identity. ENS resolution overview.

Is an ENS name the same as a wallet address?
No. A wallet address is the machine-readable destination on a blockchain. An ENS name is a human-readable identifier that software may resolve to an address. Because the name relies on records and resolver behavior, it can point to different destinations over time; ERC-7828 also notes that ENS names may resolve differently over time. What should you check before sending crypto to a readable name?
- Confirm the network. Make sure the wallet is set to the chain you intend to use. A name can have records for multiple chains, while a chain-specific format can include a chain identifier.
- Inspect the resolved destination. Review the address the wallet shows after resolving the name, rather than assuming the readable label alone guarantees the intended recipient.
- Check the name carefully. Similar-looking names and address spoofing can mislead users. Ethereum.org documents address-poisoning and spoofing risks; a familiar-looking display should be treated as an identifier to verify, not proof of control. Ethereum.org: Naming smart contracts.
What readable names do—and do not—guarantee
- They improve legibility: a name can be easier to recognize than a long machine-readable address.
- They require compatible software: the app must support the name or formatted identifier and, for a name, perform the relevant resolution.
- They depend on destination data: a name resolves according to its configured records, which can change.
- They do not establish identity by themselves: verifying the resolved destination and chain remains important.
