Hubble and Webb are partners, not rivals. Hubble is built mainly for ultraviolet and visible light, with some near-infrared reach. Webb is built for infrared. Because cosmic expansion stretches light from the most distant galaxies toward longer wavelengths, many early galaxies are far easier to detect in Webb’s infrared range. Infrared light also passes through dust that hides stars from visible-light instruments. Hubble still has a role, because it shows the young, hot, star-forming side of galaxies that infrared alone doesn’t capture.
The specifications that matter
NASA Science’s “Hubble vs. Webb” overview gives these figures:

| Feature | Hubble | James Webb |
|---|---|---|
| Wavelength range | 0.1–2.5 microns (ultraviolet, visible, some near-infrared) | 0.6–28.5 microns (visible-red through mid-infrared) |
| Primary mirror | 2.4 meters | 6.5 meters |
| Light-collecting area | Baseline | More than six times Hubble’s |
A bigger mirror gathers more light, which is what you need for faint, stretched-out signals from remote galaxies. But a bigger mirror does not automatically mean sharper pictures. Resolution depends on both mirror size and wavelength, and longer wavelengths blur more. NASA says Webb reaches about the same resolution in near-infrared light as Hubble does in visible light. So Webb’s advantage is mostly sensitivity and wavelength reach, not sharper pictures in every case.
Why distant galaxies are an infrared problem
The universe is expanding, so light from far-off galaxies has its wavelength stretched on the way to us. This is redshift. Light that left a galaxy as ultraviolet or visible can arrive as infrared. Hubble’s reach into the infrared stops at about 2.5 microns, so the most redshifted galaxies fall out of its range. Webb’s instruments are designed to catch them.

Dust is a second reason. Dust absorbs visible light and re-emits it in the infrared, so star-forming regions buried in dust can look dim or invisible to Hubble while shining in Webb’s data.
What the side-by-side images show
MACS 0416 galaxy cluster
NASA’s comparison shows this cluster field in Hubble optical light and in Webb infrared light. Both images contain hundreds of galaxies, but some red galaxies in the Webb view are invisible or barely visible in Hubble’s. The Webb data used about 22 hours of exposure and the Hubble data 122 hours. Those numbers describe this particular image pair, so don’t read them as a general speed comparison between the telescopes. NASA describes the combined view as Webb infrared data merged with Hubble visible-light data.

Hubble Ultra Deep Field
NASA’s comparison of Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 image with Webb’s NIRCam image shows red galaxies in the Webb view that were previously invisible. The displayed exposures are 11.3 days for Hubble and 0.83 days for Webb. Again, these belong to these specific observations.
SMACS 0723, Webb’s First Deep Field
This crowded field contains thousands of galaxies. The foreground cluster’s combined mass acts as a gravitational lens, bending and magnifying the light of more distant galaxies behind it. NASA reported 12.5 hours of combined infrared exposure for the 2022 image. Lensing is one of the main tricks for seeing even fainter objects, and Hubble and Webb both use it.

Interacting spirals IC 2163 and NGC 2207
This pair shows the two views of one scene. Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible image emphasizes star-filled spiral arms and visible structure. Webb’s mid-infrared image emphasizes cold dust and regions where stars are still embedded in it. Neither is more “real”; they measure different things.
Note that these combined-color images are built from separate filters and instruments, and often assign visible colors to wavelengths the eye can’t see. They are not what you would see looking through a telescope.

What each telescope is better for
- Hubble: ultraviolet and visible detail, hot young stars, visible structure in nearby and mid-distance galaxies, and decades of archival data to compare against.
- Webb: the faintest, most redshifted early galaxies, dust-hidden star formation, and cool dust and gas through its near- and mid-infrared instruments.
- Together: combining ultraviolet/visible and infrared data covers a galaxy’s stars and dust across more of its spectrum.
How astronomers know a galaxy is “early”
Light takes time to arrive, so a distant galaxy is seen as it was long ago. Astronomers gauge how far back by measuring redshift, as NASA explains in its distance explainer. Imaging can flag candidate high-redshift galaxies from their colors, but spectroscopy, which spreads light by wavelength and reads off spectral features, measures redshift more directly. A striking image or a photometric candidate is not the same as a spectroscopically confirmed distance.
The dated example: NASA’s Webb team announced JADES-GS-z14-0 on May 30, 2024, at redshift 14.32, corresponding to less than 300 million years after the big bang. It was then the most distant known galaxy. NASA noted the science was still in progress and not yet peer reviewed. “Most distant” titles change as new observations arrive, so check a recent source before calling any galaxy the current record holder.
Quick Recap
How to read a Hubble–Webb comparison fairly
- Check which wavelength each image uses, because resolution and what’s visible both depend on it.
- Treat exposure times as details of that image pair, not a performance ranking.
- Ask whether a quoted distance comes from imaging alone or from a spectrum.
- Remember that false-color and composite images are processed representations of measured data.
