Hub, Switch, and Router: Key Differences in a Cricket Analogy

A hub repeats traffic to all connected devices, a switch forwards it across a local network, and a router moves packets between networks. A cricket analogy makes the roles easier to remember.

A hub repeats a message to every connected device, a switch forwards it toward the intended device on a local network, and a router moves packets between networks. In a cricket analogy, that is the difference between announcing a message to the whole team, passing it to a particular teammate, and choosing a route to another team or ground. The analogy is simplified: switches use MAC address information within a local area network (LAN), while routers use destination IP information to forward packets between networks.

How the cricket analogy works

Imagine teammates exchanging messages during a cricket match. If one player needs to tell another something, the way the message is handled depends on the network device:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Hub: The player announces the message to the whole team. Everyone can hear it, even if it was meant for one teammate.
  • Switch: The message is directed toward the intended teammate on the same team.
  • Router: The message is sent onward between teams or grounds, with a route chosen to reach the other network.

This is only a way to picture each device’s role; it does not reproduce network protocols or all the decisions devices make when handling traffic.

What each device does

Device Main job Traffic scope Address information
Hub Repeats received traffic to all connected devices. Devices connected to the hub. No destination-based forwarding; it repeats traffic to all connected devices.
Switch Connects devices and forwards traffic toward the intended destination. Typically devices on the same LAN. MAC address information.
Router Connects networks and forwards packets between them. Traffic moving between networks, such as a home LAN and the Internet. Destination IP information.

Hub: everyone gets the message

A basic hub repeats incoming traffic to every device connected to it. A connected device may therefore receive traffic that was not intended for it. Cisco identifies this all-device forwarding as a disadvantage that can contribute to congestion and security concerns. Cisco’s explanation of network switching and hubs describes the distinction.

Switch: traffic is directed within the LAN

A switch connects devices in a local area network, such as computers and printers on a wired office or home network. It uses MAC address information to forward traffic toward the intended device rather than sending every message to every connected device. Ethernet switches handle wired network links and use addressing information in Ethernet frames. Cisco’s Ethernet switch overview explains the role of Ethernet frames and MAC addresses.

Router: packets travel between networks

A router connects separate networks and forwards packets using destination IP information. At home, a router commonly connects the local network to the Internet. Cisco’s router definition describes this inter-network role.

Why a home setup may include more than one role

Hub, switch, and router describe functions, not necessarily three separate boxes. Modern networking products can combine roles, so the device you call your home router may also provide local wired connections or other network functions. The key distinction is what the function does: local device-to-device forwarding is switching; forwarding between networks is routing.

If your router has too few Ethernet connections for your wired devices, you can connect an unmanaged Ethernet switch to the router to add ports for computers, printers, or other Ethernet devices. The switch extends wired connections; it does not replace the router’s role in connecting networks. Cisco’s guide to how switches work describes unmanaged switches and this kind of setup.

When an unmanaged or managed switch makes sense

For basic wired connectivity, an unmanaged switch is plug-and-play and requires no configuration. A managed switch offers configuration and more control and features. Choose between them based on whether you need those settings; if you simply need additional wired connections, the unmanaged option covers that use case.
