Huawei is building HarmonyOS as a cross-device platform, not just a smartphone operating system. Its September 2026 announcements describe an AI-focused system for phones, PCs, vehicles and homes, alongside a growing developer and app ecosystem. They do not, however, announce a dated consumer-phone launch in specific overseas markets. For buyers, that distinction matters: global developer ambitions are not proof that HarmonyOS phones will soon be sold worldwide.
Huawei’s strategy reaches beyond smartphones
Huawei describes HarmonyOS as a platform for multiple kinds of connected devices. Its developer materials cover apps and Atomic Services for different device types, while its September 2026 keynote outlined platform areas for AI phones, PCs, vehicles and homes. The company’s stated direction is therefore broader than competing for phone users alone: it aims to build services and experiences that work across its device ecosystem.

Huawei also characterizes HarmonyOS 7 as moving toward an agent-oriented operating system, with AI capabilities, developer tools and cross-device functions. Those are Huawei’s descriptions of its platform direction; they should not be mistaken for independent evidence that its experience or app selection matches Android or iOS.
What Huawei says about HarmonyOS’s scale
In September 2026, Huawei reported more than 85 million HarmonyOS 6 and HarmonyOS 7 terminal devices, over 11 million registered developers, and more than 400,000 apps and services in AppGallery. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited counts.

A separate measure comes from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). In a March 2026 report, CSIS said that 36 million Huawei devices were running the latest HarmonyOS versions as of late 2025. That figure covers a different date and measure from Huawei’s combined HarmonyOS 6/7 device count, so the two numbers should not be treated as a direct growth comparison.
What “worldwide” means—and what it does not
Huawei’s developer site presents AppGallery distribution as global and promotes tools for building HarmonyOS apps. This supports the conclusion that Huawei wants developers and app publishers to reach users beyond mainland China. It does not establish where or when consumers will be able to buy a new HarmonyOS smartphone.

The official materials reviewed for Huawei’s September 2026 announcements do not name overseas launch countries, give an international handset launch date, or specify whether the same software configuration will ship across regions. A worldwide consumer rollout remains unconfirmed on this evidence. A credible launch announcement would need to identify the markets, phone models, software version and availability dates, as well as explain regional app and service support.
How the challenge compares with Android and iOS
The available evidence supports a comparison of Huawei’s stated approach—not a claim that HarmonyOS has achieved feature or market parity with Android or iOS.

What to check before buying a Huawei phone
Huawei UK’s support guidance is specific to that regional site, so it should not be treated as a universal statement covering every country or product. For a purchase decision, verify the exact model and operating system offered locally, then check whether your required apps and services are available and supported on that configuration. In particular, do not assume that an app’s presence in an app store guarantees access to the Google services or other dependencies it may require.
That practical compatibility check is more useful than judging an operating system by ecosystem totals alone. The September 2026 figures show the scale Huawei says it has reached; the app and service experience that matters to an individual buyer depends on the actual device and region.
