The third stakeholder is a useful joke about requirements creep, not a technical limit: the real question is whether the modal is still a small server-driven interaction or has become one part of a growing client-side system the team needs to coordinate.
Can you build a modal with htmx?
Yes. htmx lets HTML elements initiate HTTP requests, then directs returned HTML—often a fragment—into a chosen target using a swap strategy. That gives you the mechanics for fetching and inserting modal content; it does not give you a complete, styled modal component with every interaction handled for you. See the htmx documentation and attribute reference.

Think of an application modal as two jobs: getting its content into the page, and presenting that content as an overlay. htmx can handle the request and insertion. Markup, browser APIs, or a small JavaScript component can handle opening and closing the overlay, form submission, validation feedback, focus, keyboard behavior, and dismissal. There is no single canonical modal recipe established by the official examples cited here; choose the implementation that fits your application.
Browser dialogs are not application modals
The hx-confirm and hx-prompt attributes gate a request with the browser’s built-in confirmation or prompt dialog. These are not substitutes for a designed, in-page modal. The htmx dialogs example shows these attributes in use and documents prompt text being sent in an HX-Prompt request header.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
What should the interaction own?
A modal is a pattern, not a verdict on your architecture. Start by describing the behavior rather than counting stakeholders or overlays.
- One fetched form: The server returns a form, htmx inserts it into a target, and the user submits it. If the server remains the source of truth and the client behavior is limited, this may stay a focused server-driven interaction.
- A shared product component: If several routes and teams need the same modal design and behavior, a reusable component can centralize presentation and interaction rules. That component may coexist with htmx rather than replace it.
- A coordinated client-side flow: Nested overlays, optimistic updates, substantial local state, or interactions that must stay synchronized across components increase the amount of client behavior the team must own. That is a reason to assess the architecture, not an automatic instruction to rewrite it.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- Interaction scope: Is this one request and one response, or a sequence of overlays and state changes that must coordinate?
- Behavior ownership: Can the server’s HTML responses describe most of the interaction, or does the client need explicit state and event handling?
- Reuse: Is this an isolated modal, or a shared design-system pattern used across routes and teams?
- Accessibility and fallback: Does the markup preserve ordinary HTML semantics, and which parts should work without JavaScript? The htmx documentation says normal HTML accessibility guidance applies and discusses progressive-enhancement tradeoffs.
- Maintenance: Can one small integration stay understandable, or would scattered scripts be harder to maintain than a clearly owned component layer? This is a team-level tradeoff, not a measured property of htmx.
htmx does not eliminate JavaScript. Its documentation explicitly allows scripting and recommends integrating scripts in a hypermedia-friendly way, including communication through events and keeping non-hypermedia components isolated where appropriate. If interaction complexity keeps accumulating, review where behavior belongs before deciding whether a broader client-side framework is justified.
What progressive enhancement means for a modal
htmx’s boosted links and forms can fall back to ordinary browser navigation when JavaScript is unavailable. A modal is less straightforward: if the overlay depends on client behavior, decide what a user without JavaScript should receive. You might preserve a normal link to the content or let a form submit through conventional navigation. The right fallback depends on the interaction; it is not guaranteed merely by using htmx.

Which htmx version is this advice about?
The project site’s quick start currently shows htmx 2.0.11 and says the 2.x line dropped Internet Explorer support; it points users who require IE support to the 1.x line. Check the htmx project site for the current version and browser-support guidance before choosing a release.
