HTMLCSStoImage can serve raster images as PNG, JPEG (using the API value jpg), or WebP. Its documentation says raster renders are stored as PNG; requesting a .jpg or .webp URL converts that stored PNG when served. If you omit a format, the default URL serves PNG. The format setting changes the returned URL extension, not the stored image definition, so the same image ID can be requested in another supported format later.
How HTMLCSStoImage format selection works
The API supports png, jpg, webp, and pdf. For raster output, the format choice determines the extension in the returned URL. The vendor says the raster render is stored as PNG and that JPG and WebP are converted from that stored PNG when requested. Format values are case-insensitive. See the format parameter documentation and API guide for the API’s current behavior.

- Omit the format: the default extensionless URL serves PNG.
- Request
png: the returned URL uses PNG. - Request
jpg: the returned URL uses the.jpgextension and serves a JPEG conversion. - Request
webp: the returned URL uses the.webpextension and serves a WebP conversion.
The format parameter was added to request bodies on August 27, 2026, according to the vendor’s changelog. The changelog says it applies to HTML/CSS images, URL screenshots, saved-template images, and image batches. The exact parameter placement and request syntax depend on the API operation; use the relevant operation’s documentation rather than assuming one request shape applies to all of them.

There is no documented universal winner for HTMLCSStoImage output. The vendor’s reviewed pages do not publish a controlled comparison of equivalent images for file size, visual quality, or conversion speed. Choose according to the consuming software and your own requirements, then compare equivalent renders if size or fidelity is decisive.

| Format | HTMLCSStoImage behavior | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Default format when the format is omitted; raster renders are stored as PNG. | A straightforward choice when you want the stored raster format without requesting a conversion. |
JPEG (jpg) |
Served by converting the stored PNG when the returned URL uses .jpg. |
Use when the systems consuming the image expect JPEG; the docs do not quantify the resulting size or quality. |
| WebP | Served by converting the stored PNG when the returned URL uses .webp. |
WebP as a format supports lossy and lossless compression and alpha transparency; those general capabilities do not establish what settings or output quality this API conversion uses. |
WebP’s format-level capabilities are described in IETF RFC 9649. They should not be mistaken for a benchmark of HTMLCSStoImage’s served files. If you need to choose based on a particular image, request equivalent outputs and inspect their compatibility, visual appearance, and byte size in your own workflow.
Does changing the format change or lock the saved image?
No. HTMLCSStoImage’s format reference says: “The parameter only changes the URL returned by the creation request. It does not change the stored image definition or lock the image to one format.” In practical terms, a saved image ID can be requested using another supported extension later. The format selection is about how the image is served, rather than a different stored image definition.

Is PDF another image format option?
PDF is supported, but it is a separate render and storage path, not a fourth raster format alongside PNG, JPEG, and WebP. If you need a document rather than a raster image, follow the API’s PDF-specific instructions. The vendor’s documentation and changelog distinguish PDF from raster output.
