HTMLCSStoImage API Timeout on Slow Websites: Troubleshooting Steps

A slow screenshot, a caller timeout, and a 429 are different problems. Learn how HTML/CSS to Image readiness controls work and how to diagnose each case.

If an HTML/CSS to Image capture seems to time out, first separate a slow page render from a caller-side request error and an HTTP 429. Record the endpoint, elapsed time, status, response body, and whether the API returned an image URL or ID. The official documentation does not establish a universal server-side timeout duration, so a long request alone does not prove the renderer hit a fixed timeout.

Why slow pages delay a screenshot

HTML/CSS to Image says its renderer waits for the page’s load event and then monitors additional network traffic, including external CSS and images. A page that continues loading resources can therefore take longer than a simple static page. Content added asynchronously by JavaScript can also appear after the initial load, so the capture may happen before the content you need is ready.

The vendor describes simple renders as taking as little as 300 ms, most renders as 1–3 seconds, and complex pages as sometimes taking longer. These are general vendor observations, not a guarantee or an independently measured benchmark. Actual timing depends on the page and its resources.

Choose the right readiness control

Control Use it when Trade-off
ms_delay A known extra delay after page load should give JavaScript or an animation time to finish. A fixed delay is easy to use, but may be too short or waste time. The docs suggest starting at 500 ms for JavaScript and increasing as needed.
render_when_ready with ScreenshotReady() Your application can identify the point at which the content required in the image is ready. This gives the page an explicit readiness signal, but your JavaScript must call it at the correct time.
max_wait_ms You need a ceiling on how long the renderer waits before capture. A cap limits waiting but can produce an incomplete screenshot if essential content is still loading. The documented range is 500–10,000 ms.

Use a delay for predictable late content

Set ms_delay when the page usually needs a known amount of extra time after loading—for example, to finish a JavaScript update. Start with 500 ms, inspect the result, and increase the delay only if the required content is still missing. A longer fixed delay also adds time to every affected capture.

Signal readiness from the application

If your code knows when the page is complete, use render_when_ready: true and call ScreenshotReady() from page JavaScript after the content you need has rendered. This is preferable to guessing a delay when readiness depends on application state. Confirm that every relevant execution path reaches the signal; otherwise the page may wait for the configured cap.

Cap the wait with max_wait_ms

max_wait_ms sets the maximum wait before capture. HTML/CSS to Image documents values from 500 through 10,000 milliseconds. It can be combined with ms_delay, but the maximum takes precedence. Do not set it above 10,000 ms: that is outside the documented range. The cap controls render waiting; the documentation does not say it changes your HTTP client’s timeout or a separate server-side request deadline.

Choose the cap using representative target pages, then inspect the images. A low cap may return quickly but omit late-loading text, images, or other required content. There is no one correct value for every site.

Reduce work only when the omitted resources are unnecessary

Capture a specific element

If you only need one region, use the selector option to capture the element rather than the full page. Check the resulting image for dependencies such as fonts, backgrounds, or images that may be loaded outside the selected region.

Block irrelevant requests cautiously

URL rendering supports request_overrides to block matched requests; the documentation marks this feature as requiring a paid plan. Blocking analytics or other nonessential traffic may reduce unnecessary work, but do not block stylesheets, scripts, fonts, or images needed for the capture. Validate the screenshot after each change.

Diagnose HTTP 429 separately from a slow render

A 429 is not proof that a website rendered too slowly. HTML/CSS to Image documents two distinct limit paths:

  • INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
  • Image creation: renders consume image credits included with the plan. If the allowance is exhausted, the API can return a 429 with a plan-limit message. The FAQ says image generation has no per-second or per-minute request limit, but usage is still limited by plan credits.
  • Management API operations: resource-management reads and writes have separate per-minute throttles. The current limits page documents 100 read requests and 20 write requests per minute for the relevant management operation groups, per organization. These limits do not apply to image creation.

Read the response message and headers before retrying. For a management throttle, follow Retry-After if present; otherwise the provider says to wait 60 seconds. Waiting does not restore exhausted image credits.

Check render usage

For image-credit diagnosis, inspect the x-renders-allowed, x-renders-consumed, and x-renders-used response headers, or consult the documented usage methods. GET /v1/usage reports image history; it is not a counter for management API requests.

Work through a timeout report in order

  1. Record what actually failed. Capture the endpoint, caller-measured duration, HTTP status, response body, and whether an image URL or ID was returned. This distinguishes a slow response from an explicit API error or a caller-side deadline.
  2. Check what the page is waiting on. Look for slow external CSS, images, or other network activity, and determine whether important content is injected after the page load event.
  3. Pick one readiness strategy. Try a measured ms_delay, application signaling with render_when_ready and ScreenshotReady(), or a deliberate max_wait_ms cap. Avoid changing several controls at once; compare the output with the same URL and content requirements.
  4. Verify visual completeness. Check that expected text, images, and layout are present. If the cap was reached too soon, raise it within the documented range or use an explicit application-ready signal.
  5. If the status is 429, check limits instead. Use the message, relevant headers, and usage information to distinguish exhausted image credits from a management throttle. Retry according to the management throttle guidance only when that is the cause.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely explanation What to try
Capture takes longer on pages with many external assets The renderer waits for page load and monitors additional network traffic. Identify slow or irrelevant requests; consider a selector or carefully chosen request overrides if those resources are not needed.
Screenshot is returned, but JavaScript content is missing The content was injected after the capture became ready. Add a suitable ms_delay or have the page call ScreenshotReady() when that content is ready.
Capture returns before all desired content appears A short max_wait_ms cap may have been reached. Test a higher cap up to 10,000 ms, or use the application readiness signal.
HTTP 429 with a plan-limit message Image credits may be exhausted. Check render headers and usage; waiting 60 seconds does not replenish the allowance.
HTTP 429 identifies a management operation group A per-minute management read or write throttle may apply. Follow Retry-After when present; otherwise wait 60 seconds before retrying.
Caller reports a timeout but the API response is unclear The caller or integration may have stopped waiting; the available docs do not establish a universal API timeout duration. Record caller timing and error details, then compare with a direct request and a representative page.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; before capture it accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.

Example cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
