Why emoji can disappear or change in a PDF
Emoji rendering depends on both the browser’s rendering context and the fonts available to the process that launches it. A Linux machine may have an emoji font installed on the host but not in the container where Chrome runs, or fontconfig may not expose that font correctly. Separately, CSS rules for print can hide, replace, or restyle content that looks correct on screen.

Identify the symptom before changing the setup
- Emoji are absent or show as tofu boxes: check font coverage, installation, fallback, and the exact character sequence. Some emoji are composed from multiple code points; test the exact sequence that fails.
- Emoji appear in black and white: determine which font rendered them and whether color-font support works through the browser-to-PDF path. Noto Color Emoji uses the CBDT/CBLC format, and its maintainers document platform-specific support considerations. Noto Emoji fonts
- Emoji appear on screen but not in the PDF: compare print CSS and font availability in the runtime. Puppeteer’s PDF method uses print media by default. Puppeteer Page.pdf() API
- Only certain placements fail: compare inherited styles, font-family rules, pseudo-elements, and layout around working and failing examples. A single report of this behavior does not establish its cause. Puppeteer issue #11120

Reduce the page to a reproducible case
Create a minimal HTML page containing the exact missing emoji and a known-good emoji in otherwise identical elements. Generate the PDF using the same container image, CI runner, WSL setup, or server process as the failing job. Keep the markup and styles simple enough to compare computed font families and inherited CSS.

Confirm the emoji font is installed and discoverable
Check fonts inside the actual runtime, not only on your workstation or host OS. On Linux, verify that the intended emoji font is visible to fontconfig and that fallback can select it. Noto’s maintainers note that Linux use of Noto Color Emoji may require fontconfig configuration. Noto Emoji fonts

Installing a font is not enough if Chrome cannot discover it. If you change font files or fontconfig configuration, repeat the test in a fresh browser process and verify the precise failing characters.

Compare screen and print media
Inspect
@media printrules fordisplay,visibility,content, font-family, color, and layout changes. Check whether an emoji is supplied by a pseudo-element or replaced by print-specific content. Puppeteer’s PDF method uses print media; its API documentation shows how to emulate screen media when that is the intended output. Puppeteer Page.pdf() APIRank #3

Wait for fonts and assets before export
If the page loads web fonts or other assets asynchronously, verify that they have loaded and are available before generating the PDF. This is a prudent implementation check, not a confirmed explanation for every missing-emoji report. Confirm the expected font in the page before export rather than relying on a fixed delay alone.

Check the generated file in another viewer
Open the same PDF in more than one viewer and record the viewer and operating system when reporting a reproducible problem. This separates differences in the generated PDF from differences in how a viewer displays it; compatibility for every browser, font, and viewer combination is not established by the sources cited here.

Use authored artwork when exact appearance is essential
For a print design where the precise symbol appearance matters, consider a narrowly targeted SVG or raster asset instead of relying on runtime emoji fallback. Test the output in the viewers and environments you support, and preserve accessible text when the emoji conveys meaning. This is an engineering fallback to validate, not a universal browser fix.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Checking the host instead of the container: inspect font installation and fontconfig visibility where Chrome actually runs.
- Treating screen output as proof of PDF output: PDF generation uses print media in Puppeteer, so inspect print-specific CSS.
- Installing Chrome launch libraries as an emoji fix: Puppeteer’s Linux troubleshooting guide covers shared-library dependencies needed to launch Chrome. It does not establish that installing those libraries repairs missing emoji. Puppeteer troubleshooting
