Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHTML gives a web page its content and structure, CSS controls how that content is presented, and JavaScript adds many kinds of behavior. A page often uses all three, but they have different primary jobs.
How HTML, CSS, and JavaScript differ
A useful first distinction is what you change when you work with each technology: HTML organizes content, CSS changes its presentation, and JavaScript lets a page respond or update dynamically.

| Technology | Primary job | What you typically change | Typical form |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTML | Structure and meaning | Content organization, such as headings, paragraphs, links, images, and forms | Elements in an HTML document |
| CSS | Presentation | Appearance and layout, such as colors, spacing, and positioning | Rules in a stylesheet |
| JavaScript | Behavior | Responses to user actions and dynamic page updates | Statements in a script |
What HTML does
HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, marks up the content of a page so a browser can understand its structure and meaning. A heading, a paragraph, a link, an image, and a form field are examples of content represented by HTML elements.
MDN describes HTML as “the most basic building block of the Web” and says it “defines the meaning and structure of web content.” Read MDN’s HTML overview.

What CSS does
CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, describes how a document is presented. It can set visual styles and control layout while leaving the meaning of the HTML content intact. For example, CSS can change a page’s spacing, colors, and arrangement.
MDN’s CSS overview explains the stylesheet language and its role in presentation.

What JavaScript does
JavaScript is a programming language commonly used to add functionality and behavior to web pages. A script can respond to events, such as a user action, and update what the page displays. JavaScript also runs in environments beyond the browser.
MDN’s JavaScript overview introduces the language and its uses.

How the three work together on a page
Imagine a sign-up form. HTML provides the form, its labels, and its fields. CSS determines how those elements are spaced and arranged. JavaScript could respond when someone submits the form or update a message on the page.
This is a teaching example, not a requirement: HTML forms include built-in controls and features, so a form does not automatically need JavaScript. Whether extra behavior is needed depends on what the form is meant to do.

What the DOM has to do with JavaScript
When a browser reads HTML, it builds a representation of the document called the Document Object Model, or DOM. The DOM is organized as a tree of nodes and objects. Its methods let programs access or change the document’s structure, content, or style, and event handlers can run when events occur.

The DOM is a Web API, not part of the JavaScript language itself. JavaScript is simply the language most commonly used to work with the DOM on web pages. MDN explains the DOM and its relationship to web documents.

“HTML is structure, CSS is style, and JavaScript is behavior” is a helpful starting point, not a set of absolute boundaries. CSS can define visual states and transitions. JavaScript can change document content and styling through the DOM. HTML also provides interactive controls and form features without requiring a script for every interaction.
A practical order for learning them
- Make a small HTML page. Add a heading, a paragraph, a link, or a simple form. MDN’s basic HTML syntax guide includes beginner examples and supports practice in a local editor or browser playground.
- Add CSS. Use a stylesheet to adjust the page’s presentation, such as its spacing, colors, and layout.
- Try a small JavaScript interaction. Once the page’s content and presentation are in place, add a behavior such as responding to a button action or updating a message.
This sequence lets you see what each technology contributes before combining them.
