Font embedding helps the PDF display consistently on other devices, but it does not guarantee correct shaping of conjuncts, reph, half forms, or vowel marks.
Why Hindi fonts change or break in a PDF
A website can request a font in CSS without that font being available to the PDF renderer. If the renderer cannot fetch or find it, it may substitute another face. That can change the appearance of Devanagari characters and alter line breaks. A font-family declaration alone does not prove that the requested font was used.

There are two separate things to check:
- Font availability and embedding: The renderer must have access to a suitable font, and the output PDF should embed it or a subset of it if portability matters.
- Text shaping: The renderer must correctly position and combine Devanagari characters. An embedded font does not, by itself, prove that conjuncts or vowel marks were shaped correctly.
Use Unicode Hindi text where possible. If the page relies on a legacy encoding or font-specific glyph mapping, address that at the source; the converter documentation cited here does not establish a particular legacy-text conversion procedure.
Prepare the page and renderer
Identify and provide a Devanagari-capable font
First identify the font actually intended for the Hindi text and confirm it includes Devanagari glyphs. Noto Sans Devanagari is one example named in a converter’s implementation description, but font support varies by tool. Check whether your chosen renderer includes the font or lets you supply a custom font.

For example, Ironfang says its rendering environment includes Noto families and that other fonts must be loaded with @font-face from an absolute address. It specifies an absolute HTTPS address or a data URI because pasted HTML has no base URL. Those are Ironfang-specific requirements, not universal rules for every converter. Wait for fonts before conversion
If the page loads its Hindi font over the web, trigger conversion only after the font has loaded. The correct wait mechanism depends on the converter; there is no universal delay or setting established across products. Follow the selected renderer’s documentation and make sure the font resource is reachable from its runtime.

Check the generated PDF
Inspect font properties
Open the PDF’s font information and confirm that the intended Devanagari font is listed as embedded or embedded subset. In Acrobat, use Document Properties and the Fonts tab; Adobe also explains that substitution may not match unconventional script characters. See Adobe’s guide to font embedding and substitution.
Subsetting is common: a PDF may contain only the glyphs needed for its existing text. Prince says it typically embeds only the necessary parts of fonts. That can be sufficient for reading, but may not be sufficient if someone later needs to edit the PDF and add characters not present in the original output. Prince documents an option to disable subsetting for that type of editing need; font permissions and the product’s settings still apply. See Prince’s font embedding and subsetting documentation.

Review actual Hindi text visually
Inspect representative text at normal reading size and at higher zoom. Check conjuncts, reph, half forms, and vowel marks for missing glyphs, misplaced marks, or broken combinations. PDF font properties help diagnose embedding; they cannot replace this visual check.
Choose a conversion pipeline by what it proves

Troubleshoot common Hindi PDF problems
Hindi characters appear as boxes or blank spaces
- Check that the selected font contains Devanagari glyphs.
- Confirm that the renderer can access that font rather than silently substituting another face.
- Check the PDF’s font listing to see whether the intended font was embedded.
The font looks different or line breaks move
A web font may not have loaded before conversion, or the renderer may have substituted a different font. Confirm the font URL is reachable from the renderer, use the custom-font mechanism documented by that product, and wait for loading before generating the PDF.
The font is embedded but Hindi forms still look wrong
Embedding and shaping are separate. Review the affected conjuncts and vowel marks, then check the renderer’s Devanagari shaping support with the selected font. UseoTools describes fontkit shaping in its own tool, but that product-specific description does not establish how other converters behave.

The PDF displays correctly but cannot be extended in the same font
The file may contain a subset with only the glyphs used in the original page. If downstream editing must add characters, check whether the converter supports full-font embedding and whether the font’s permissions allow it. Prince documents disabling subsetting for editing cases that need additional glyphs.
