To document a competitor’s apparent price change, capture the same offer under recorded conditions, preserve the original screenshot and its URL and timestamp, and compare the image with structured price notes. A screenshot shows what a browser displayed; by itself, it does not establish who served the page, exactly when the price was live, or whether the image remained untouched from capture onward. Treat it as one part of a repeatable evidence record—not conclusive proof.
What a price-change screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot can preserve visible context: the product or plan, displayed price, promotional labels, availability, and nearby terms. That context can help a team investigate whether an offer appears to have changed between two observations.

But an image alone does not authenticate the source page, prove the exact time the page was live, or establish an untouched chain of handling. A cryptographic hash can help detect whether a file changed after it was hashed; it does not prove where the image came from or whether the depicted price was true. For formal disputes, applicable evidence requirements depend on the jurisdiction and circumstances. Consult counsel rather than assuming screenshots will be legally admissible.
Define what counts as a comparable offer
Before collecting captures, select decision-relevant competitor pages and define the offer you intend to monitor. Record the precise product or plan, market, and promotion. Specify what constitutes a change—for example, a base price, discounted price, recurring price, package contents, shipping threshold, tax treatment, or availability.

Do not treat unlike offers as one price series. A changed bundle, market, promotion, or account-specific offer can explain a different displayed number without demonstrating that the same offer’s price changed.
Fix and record capture conditions
Capture at a schedule suited to how quickly the offer could change. Keep conditions consistent when possible and record differences when they cannot be. Online content can vary with credentials, browser, location, date, and time; SWGDE recommends prioritizing content according to volatility in its Best Practices for Acquiring Online Content.
For each capture, record:
- Source URL and final URL after redirects.
- Capture date and time in UTC, plus the local timezone if relevant.
- Market or country, language, and currency.
- Product or plan identity and the offer being observed.
- Operator or capture tool, browser and version where available, viewport or device profile, and whether the capture covers the full page.
- Whether the visitor was logged in, and any location, cookie, or consent settings that could affect the offer.
- Any capture error, limitation, or unusual page behavior.
When feasible, include the URL and date/time in the captured screen. SWGDE Version 1.1 (2024-03-15), section 7.1, says: “All available information displayed should be included in the screen capture such as URL and date and time.”

Preserve the original and its record
- Save the unaltered screenshot as the original. Keep a capture record alongside it with the details above.
- Store originals in a controlled archive with access appropriate to the sensitivity of your work.
- Calculate and record a cryptographic hash for each original file and, if useful, for the collection. SWGDE recommends NIST-approved secure hash algorithms for validating and uniquely identifying acquired files.
- Make a separate working copy for annotations, crops, or highlighting. Do not overwrite the original.
- Keep a clear link between each image, its capture record, and any extracted data or review notes.
A hash fingerprints a file from the point at which it was calculated. It cannot retroactively establish the image’s origin or capture time.
Compare the price and the surrounding offer
For each observation, record product or plan name, displayed price, currency, availability, promotion wording, package contents, and visible fees. Compare those fields to identify possible differences, then inspect the full screenshot to confirm the number and its context.

- Market and total cost: Are the region, currency, taxes, and unavoidable fees comparable? A headline price may not express the total offer.
- Promotion: Is the number a list price, sale price, recurring rate, or limited promotion? Preserve badges, strikethrough prices, and promotion wording.
- Availability and delivery: Did stock status, shipping terms, or a shipping threshold change?
- Visitor context: Could location, login state, device, or cookies account for the difference?
- Capture record: Do the timestamp, final URL, and integrity records support a like-for-like comparison?

Have a person inspect both captures and confirm that the same offer and market are being compared. If useful, annotate a derivative copy and leave the originals unchanged. Record plausible alternative explanations—such as a changed bundle, sale badge, shipping threshold, tax notice, or stock state. Treat automated alerts as prompts for review, not as automatic repricing instructions.
Escalate collection for a serious dispute
If the records may be used in a formal dispute, ask counsel about the applicable jurisdiction and collection requirements. SWGDE’s guidance is intended for preservation in legal, administrative, or similar proceedings, but is not legal advice. It describes screenshots as less forensically sound than more inclusive acquisition approaches and recommends using them alongside other methods where possible. A vendor’s capture or archiving features are not independent proof of authenticity or legal admissibility.
